HARRY C. KETTELSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSTGNOR T0 PRODUCTS MFG. 85 SALES CO., OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN;
SPO'UT FOR CONTAINERS.
T 0 alt 'w hom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY C. Kirr'iunsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of lt/[ilwaukee and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spouts for Containers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to spouts for containers. 4
In dispensing oil for automobiles it is the universal practice to provide the oil in quart jars with a removable metal cover provided with a spout to facilitate pour ing the oil intothe crank case. These spouts do not freely allow the outward flow vof the oil ldue to the fact that air is trapped in the jar and has to enter against the flow of oil.
A Attempts have been made to overcome this defect but they either result in an unsatisfactory device or in one involving toogreat an expense in the manufacture thereof.
This invention is designed to overcome the above noted defects and objects of such invention are to provide a spout for a container which is so constructed that it will provide a free air passage and permit the rapid discharge of oil', and which is so made that it may be readily and cheaply manufactured with a minimum of expense and operations.
Embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view through the device.
Figure 2 is a transverse enlarged section on the line .9J-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a further form of the invention, such view corresponding to Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the jar is indicated at 1 and is provided with a screw top 2. This top carries a spout 3 which is provided with an air pipe t adjacent one side thereof. Preferably, the front end of the spout 3 is beveled, as indicated at 5,
Referrii'ig to Figure 2, it will be seen that the spout 3 and pipe 4 are formed from one piece of material. A depression 6 is provided longitudinally of the spout 8 and the overlapping end of the spout seats within this depression. However, it is to be noted from Figure 2, that the depressed portion continues within the spout and is curved to form the air pipe 4:. The depression 6 permit-s the forming of the `device as a perfect conical surface on its exterior.
It is to be noted further that the depression formed by the portion serves as a guide for the overlapping portion and accurately positions such portion during assembly.
FVith reference to the form shown in Figure 3, it will be seen that the spout 7 is formed very much like the spout 3 except that the depressed portion 8, corresponding to the depressed portion 6, is set inwardly a greater dist-ance.. This depressed portion not only receives the overlapping portion of the spout, but also receives a lip 9 extending laterally from an independent air pipe or channel l0. This construe tion may be very readily followed and provides not only a gauge for the overlapping portion of the spout but also provides a gauge for the accurate positioning of the lateral lip 9 of the air pipe or channel 10.
lFurther, in this last described form of the invention, the air .passage or channel may be very readily formed from a small piece of sheet metal and this very markedly reduces the cost of. manufacture of the .de-A
having an open inner andouter end, said spout being formed of a rolled strip of sheet metal having overlapping ends with the inner underlappinportion depressed inwardly a distance greater than the thiokness of the sheet metal, and an air channel formed of a strip of sheet metal and positioned within said spout and having a laterally extending` lip located within the depressed portion between the overlapping portions. 10 In testimony that I Claim the foregoing I have hereunto set iny hand 'at Milwaukee,
in the county lof Milwaukee and State of iseonsiir HARRY C. KETTELSON/
