This invention relates to a closure cap and has relation more particularly toa device of this kind adapted for use in connection with gas tanks or kindred containers, and it is an object of the invent-ion to provide a device of this kindlwith means engageable with a part of the tank to hold the cap against removal by an unauthorized person.
` Another object of the invention is to prow vide a cap of this kind comprising a member adapted for thread-ed or other detachable engagement `with a tank and a lid pivoted to said member and wherein the member has arranged therein a lock mechanism including a movable bolt preferably key operated, said bolt uponmovement in one direction having requisite engagement with a part ofthe tank to hold the member against removal from the tank.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cap of this kind with a locking mechanism including a sliding bolt together with a member normally Vengaging said bolt to hold the same in either extended or retracted position and whereina key is employed for moving said holding member into release position and also for moving lthe bolt into either extended or retracted position. The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved closure `cap whereby certain im portant advantages are attained and the device `rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use; Aas will bc hereinafter more fully set forth.

My improved cap, as herein disclosed, comprises two members A and B, the member A being adapted for direct engagement with the neck lor kindred part of a tank or other receptacle. The member A, as herein disclosed, comprises a plate 2 of requisite dimensions andV which is provided at its peripheral portion with the spaced annular flanges 3 and e to snugly receive therebetween the outer portion of the 9o neck l. As herein set forth, the inner face of the flange 3 has threaded engagement with the outer face of the neck l although it is to be understood that if desired the flange 4t may be properly threaded for en- 95 gagement with the inner face of said neck.
i The cent 1al portion of the plate 2 inwardly of the flange l is outwardly dished, as at 6, while the opposite face of the member A isclosed by the plate 7 Welded or 100 otherwise secured to the inner marginal edge portion of the fiange 4. It is to be understood, however, that the plate 7 is not applied until after the lock mechanism to be hereinalter described has been properly assembled.
The member B constitutes al top or cap which, when in closed position with 'respect to the member A, provides an effective dust Huard for the member A, or more particuarly the mechanism therein, and also protects the member A and the parts carried thereby against rain, snow or other foreign elements.
This member B is hingedly connected, as
at 8, to a peripheral portion of the plate 2 whereby the member B may be readily swung outward or from said plate. he member .B is held in closed position with respect to the member A by a spring catch 9 herein disclosed as secured to the inner face of the flange 4 and projecting through an opening l() in the plate 2 whereby when the member B is closed, the catch 9 has effective engagement by an inwardly disposed lip 11 comprised in the structure of the member B.
The member B includes an annular side flange 12 from the outer or free marginal portion of which the lip 11 is directed and slidably disposed through the flange 12 for contact with the catch 9 is a plunger 14 normallymaintained at the limit of its outward movement by an expansible spring 15 encircling an extended portion of the plunger 14 and interposed between the fiange 12 and a head 16 carried by the outer extermity of the plunger 14. The outward movement of the plunger 14 is limited by contact with the inner face of the flange 12 of an enlargement or head 17 carried by the inner extremity of the lunger 14.
lith the member B in closed position and so held by the catch 9, when it is desired to swing the member B into open position`r the .i plunger 14 is forced inwardly, the resultant contact of the plunger with the catch 9 releasing said catch from the lip 11 thereby permitting the requisite outward or opening movement of the member B.
Snugly arranged Within the outer end portion of the flange 4 and contacting with the outer marginal portion of the dished portion 6 is a plate 18 held in applied position by the rivets 19 or otherwise as may be preferred.
The plate 18 has disposed over its outer face a pair of spaced parallel flat members 2O which extend partially across the plate 18 and at similar ends said members are provided with the outwardly disposed and laterally directed extensions 21. Disposed through the extensions 21 and the opposite end portions of the fiat members 2() are the bolts 22 the heads 22 ot which contacting with the inner face of the plate 18.
Surrounding the bolts 22 and interposed between the flat members 2O and the extensions 21 thereof are the sleeves 23 whereby the members 2O are spaced with respect to the plate 18 and this spacing between the plate 18 and the members 2O may be varied or changed as preiererd by employing sleeves 23 of different lengths.
The members 2O immediately adjacent to the extensions 21 are provided transversely thereacross with the grooves or channels 24 which provide effective guiding means for the sliding bolt 25 and serve to maintain said bolt for movement in substantially a fixed path of travel.
Disposed along the members 2() and across the applied bolt 25 are the elongated flat members 26 through the extermities of which the bolts 22 are also directed and each of these members 26 to one side of the bolt 25 carries a barrel 27 disposed lengthwise thereof. The barrel 27 has its end 28 remote from the bolt 25 closed and within the bore of the barrel is arranged an expansible member 29 herein disclosed as a coil spring which is adapted to exert out-ward pressure upon an elongated pin 30 entering the bore of the barrel. The opposite end portion of the pin is slidably disposed through a side arm 31 of a substantially U-Shaped member 32 disposed along the member 26. The side arms 31 of the member 32 are continued by the outwardly disposed extensions or feet 33 for direct contact with the opposite end portions of the members 26 and through which the bolts 22 are also directed.
The holding nuts 34 engaged with. the bolts 22 serve to effectively maintain the members 20, 26 and 32 in assembled relation one with respect to the other and also with respect to the plate 18.
rlhe pins 30 substantially midway thereof are connected by a cross arm 35 which serves to maintain the pins 30 in parallelism and in fixed spaced relation. The central portion of the cross arm 35 has projecting at right angles therefrom an arm 36 terminating in a perpendicnlarly related lug 37. The arm 36 is disposed in a direction across the bolt 25 and the tension of the springs 29 serves to normally maintain the lug 37 in one of the spaced notches 38 provided in a marginal portion of' the bolt 25 whereby said bolt 25 is effectively held in either open or closed position. The plate 18 to the side of the applied bolt 25 opposite to the margin provided with the notches i 38 is provided with a key slot 39 which is in requisite alignment with a corresponding slot provided in the dished portion 6 of the plate 2. The inner ends of these slots 39 and 40 are enlarged to provide circular mountings4 41 for the opposite end portions of a sleeve 42 interposed between the plate 18 and the dished portion 6 of the plate 2, said sleeve 42 being provided therethrough with a radial slot 43 adapted to align with the slots 39 and member A and is provided in a marginal portion with the space'd recesses or kerfs 45 to permit the key when applied to be turned without hinderance or obstruction being offered by the plate 18 and the dished portion 6 of the plate 2. The same marginal portion of the blade of the key is also provided with another recess or kerf 46 so positioned as to permit the blade of the key to pass partially over a marginal portion of the bolt 25. hen the key is turned in one direction its blade will have Contact with a shoulder 47 to move the bolt into retracted position and when the key is turned in the opposite'direction it will have contact with the shoulder 48 on the opposite side of the bolt to extend the bolt into-locking A position. y
When the bolt 25 is extended it passes through an opening 49 in the iiange 4 and engages within an opening 50 in the neck 1 and under which conditions the member B is effectively held against removal by an unauthorized person. y
In order to minimize the necessity of duplicating the keys K different kerfs 46 may be employed as a result of either increasing or decreasing the Width of the arm 35 requiring a key to be proportioned accordingly, or by using sleeves 23 of different lengths which would i necessitate corresponding` change of the notch or kerf 46.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cap closure constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in inafter claimed.
I claim z- 1. A closure cap for a tank comprising a plate having spaced continuous flanges depending therefrom to receive therebetween a part of the tank, the inner fiange and the coacting part of the tank having registering openings when the cap is applied, a sliding bolt carried by the plate, and means for normally holding the bolt in either its eX- t-ended or retracted position.
2. A closure cap for a tank comprising a practice eXceptas here- I plate having spaced continuous flanges depending therefrom to receive therebetween a part of the tank, the inner iiange and the coacting part of the tank having registering openings when the cap is applied, a sliding bolt carried by the plate, means for normally holding the bolt in either its extended or retracted position, and means for rendering the holding means inoperative during the period the bolt is in movement.
3. A locking mechanism comprising a supporting plate, elongated members disposed over a face of said plate, means for connecting said members to the plate, said members having depressions to form guides, a sliding bolt arranged Within said depressions, a second member, means for supporting the second member for movement in a direction transverse to the sliding bolt, and means carried by said last named member to engage the sliding bolt when in either extended or retracted position to normally hold said bolt against movement.
4. A locking mechanism comprising a supporting member, a lock bolt slidably supported thereby, barrels positioned to one side of the bolt, pins extending within the barrels, expansible members within the barrels coacting with the pins for constantly urging the same outwardly, and an arm connecting the pins and provided with a lug, said pins being constantly urged to bring the lug into engagement with the bolt, said lug engaging the bolt when in either extended or retracted position to hold the bolt against movement.
