The invention reltes to improvements in pumps, und more particularly to hot oil pumps of the steam reciprocating typ'e.
One object of my invention is "to provide a pump of the Stettin reciprocating type wherein auxiliary pumpingT means Which are ctuated iy the min pump tre provided for circulating u cooling medium round the pisti'on rod to' keep the pis'ton rod packing cool in find consequently in 'operating 'condition A further object is t'o provide auxiliary pumping means lvvliich are integral with the hot oil pump itself for meintaining a ,continuous circulation of a cooling medium around at leust portion of the piston rod or rods.
In the drawing, I have shown e hot oil pump ot' Well known construction compris'- ing in generl a steam cylinder 10, a valve or liquid chamber 12, having a hot oil inlet 14, and u discharge line 16. The valve chamber 12 is provided with the usual inlet valves 18 and discharge vulves 20. A piston rod 22 connects the steam cylinder and the valve f or liquid chamber and its operation is regulated by valve controlling mechanism indicated generally at 24.
An auxiliry cylinder 26 is attached to the liquid or valve chamber'12 and is so arranged as to enclose a portion of the piston rod 22. The outer end ot the cylinder 26 'formed with .a stufling box 28 in which suitable packing is disposed, being kept in position by a gtend 29 so as to prevent leakage around the piston rod. An auxiliary piston 30 is attached to the piston ro'd 22 and is' adapted to form working fit and to operate Within the cylinder 26. Y

Under some conditions a small quantity of may be liberated by the oil in circulation, and in order to insure that the circulating system may not become gasbound and consequently have an insufficient quantity of liquid to circulate, a small pipe 46 is provvided and extends from the top of the drum 42 to the discharge line 16 from the pump. A valve 48 is provided to control the flow of gas through the line 46 and ordinarily is cracked only enough to permit the small amount of gas which may accumulate in the top of the drum to pass through. The provision of this iine also insures that the drum will always be entirely filled With liquid.
in the drawing a single cylinder pump only has been shown, but it is obvious that the same arrangement may be used for a duplex pump and one drum Would serve both cylinders.
Apparatus of preferred form and construction has been illustrated and described for the purpose of showing a way in which this invention may be used, but the inventive thought upon which the application is based, is broader than this illustra-tive embodiment thereof. and l therefore intend no limitations other than those imposed by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. The combination with a hot oil pump having an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod of the pump extends, of a container for a Huid cooling medium, a plurality of pipes connecting the upper and lower portions of the container with the auxiliary cylinder, and means for circulating the cooling medium from the lower portion of the container through the auxiliary cylinder to cool the piston rod and then returning said cooling medium directly to the upper portion of said container.
2. ri`he combination with a hot oil pump having an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod of the pump extends, of a container for a fluid cooling' medium, a plurality of pipes connectingthe upper and lower portions ofthe container with the auxiliary cylinder and means actuated by the piston rod for circulating the cooling medium from the lower portion of the container through the auxiliary cylinder to cool the piston rod and then returning said cooling medium directly to the upper portion of said container.
3. The combination with a hot oil pump having an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod of the pump extends, of a container for a fluid cooling medium, a
plurality of pipes connecting the upper and lower portions of the container with the auxiliary cylinder and an auxiliary piston on the piston rod Within the auxiliary cylinder for circulating the cooling medium from the lower portion of the container through the auxiliary cylinder to cool the piston rod and then returning said cooling medium directly to the upper portion of said container.
4. The combination with a hot oil pump having an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod extends, of a container for a fluid cooling medium, pipes connecting the opposite ends of the auxiliary cylinder with the upper portion of the fluid container, separate pipes connecting the opposite ends of the auxiliary cylinder with the lower portion of the fluid container, check valves in each of said pipes for Controlling the direction of flow of fluid therethrough, and an auxiliary piston on said piston rod Within the auxiliary cylinder for maintaining a continuous circulation of the cooling medium from the lower portion of the fluid container through the auxiliary cylinder and to the upper portion of the container.
5. The combination with a hot oil pump having an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod extends, of a container for a fluid cooling medium, means within said container for cooling the cooling medium, a plurality of pipes severally connecting the container With the auxiliary cylinder, and means for circulating the cooling medium from the lower portion of the container through the auxiliary cylinder and back to the upper portion of the container.
6. The combination with a hot oil pump ha an auxiliary cylinder adjacent the fluid end of the pump and through which the reciprocating piston rod extends, of a container for a fluid cooling medium, a plurality of pipes severally connecting the container with the auxiliary cylinder, means for cir culating the coolingmedium from the lower jlortion of the container through the auxiliary cylinder and back to the upper portion of the container, and a valved outlet in the upper end of the container for the release of any gases which may accumulate during the circulation of the cooling medium.
