Patented Dec. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES ATENT ()FFICE WALTON L. HAMPTON, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, AND VERN A. TRACY, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH LABEL-PASTING DEVICE Application filed May 12,
The invention relates to improvements in devices for applying paste to labels, or the like, and has for its object the provisionof an improved device of this character which 1s of simple construction and highly efliclent in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be mounted on any ordinary table and operated eiiiciently for the application of paste to labels, or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is capable of economical manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2, an elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3, a section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construct-ion illustrated in the drawings comprises a paste trough 5 substantially V-shaped in crosssection, and provided at the bottom with a' slot 6 for the escape of paste therefrom.
The trough 5 is provided at each end with a guide lug or ear 7, adapted and arranged to run in a guide slot 8 in a corresponding bracket or standard 9. Each of the brackets 9 is provided at its bottom with a perforated foot or flange 10, by means of which the same may be secured to a table top 11, as indicated.
In use a stack of labels 12 is placed upon the table 11 between the standards 9, with the trough 5 resting thereon adjacent to the end thereof to which it is desired to apply the paste. The trough 5 is then filled with the paste, which is of semi-solid consistency so that it will pass automatically by gravity downwardly through the slot 6 on to the edge of the uppermost label 12. The labels 12 are then withdrawn successively from the top 1928. Serial No. 277,215.
of the stack, and each label edge will receive its due supply of paste. Where the stack of labels is narrower than the length of the trough 5, strips of paper 13, or the like, are arranged in the trough 5 at each end thereof to close the ends of the slot 6 where the length of said slot exceeds the width of the stack of labels as shown.
It is also obvious that the length of the paste trough 5 may be made equal to the width of the labels in which case no strips 13 would be necessary, but, of course, a special trough will have to be provided for each size of labels treated.
By this arrangement the device may be readily adapted to use in conjunction with labels of various sizes, and a simple and effective device is provided for quicklv and efiiciently applying paste to the edges of labels. Obviously by properly arranging the stack of labels 12, a strip of paste of varying width may be applied to the labels.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into eflect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. Vie therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a paste receptacle mounted for free vertical movement and arranged to rest on a pile of labels or the like, said receptacle being provided at its bottom with an open slot forming an escape for paste; and a sealing member in the form of a flexible strip laid in one end of said receptacle and conforming to the walls of the same and closing one end of said slot.
2. A device of the class descrlbed comprj ing a paste receptacle mounted for free vertical movement and arranged to rest on a pile of labels or the like, said receptacle being provided at its bottom With an open slotforming an escape for paste; and two sea1 ing members in the form of strips of paper arranged at each end of said receptacle conforming to the Walls thereof and sealing each end of said slot.
In Witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 3rd day of May, 1928, and this 7th day of May, 1928.
