This invention relates to display vessels. The principal object or" the invention is the provision of new and improved means for mounting or hingin'g a cover or closure on a display vessel or the like.
Another ob'ect of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for de tachably hingedly' connecting a closure to a display or other vessel.
Aiurther object of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for hingedly connecting a closure or lid of a dis play or other vessel and for holding the same in a plurality of adjusted positions.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of new-and improved means for attaching the hinge to the hinge lug of a display jar.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for connecting a closure to a vessel and for holding the same in adjusted positions, that is simple in construction, easily assembled and adjusted, that is cheap to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, and that is not likely to become broken or deranged.

In displaying-foods and the like it isdesir able that as faras practicable they be not di-' rectlyexposed to the dust ladenair of the store. In my copending-application, Ser. No. 60,434, means were disclosed for employing tra'i'isparent closure for the vessel. The presentiiiventioir contemplates the use of a transparent closure with a detachable hinge connection between the closure and the vessel whereby the closure m'ay be readily removed as when the vessel isbeing cleaned or moved from one place to another.
Referring now to the reference characters, 10 designates a vessel which may be of earthenware, as shown i'nFig. 1, or of any other suitable material. The vessel 10 is'p'ref'erably cylindrical, as at 11, at its upper portion, tapered andreduce'd in diameter as It-"12 at its lowerportio'n 'tofprovide a ledge or annula r shoulder 13jentend'ing about the vessel. In practice, whenvafba'rrel' of edibles, such a's'pickles', isreceived, the vessel 10 isfilled withthe'arti'cles fr'om theba'rre'l, thus making room for the tapered portion 12 of the vessel, afterwhich' the vesselis' placed on top of the barrel for displaying the food products.
The vessel 10 is provided with a transparent lid, cover o'rclosure 14 and suitable means are provided tormou'ntin'g the lid on the vessel. In the form of mo'u-ntingmeans selected to illustrate one embodiment of'the invention, the vessel is provided with a lug 15 having'a Vertical openinglG therethrough.
The hinge designated generally by the reference character 17 ,for connecting the closure 14 to the vessel, comprises what for convenience will be termeda lower or fixed member 18 having athreaded shank member 19 for extendingthrough said opening 16. and a'movable'member 20 which is adapted to be attached to the closure 14. The fixed memberl is provided with a head 21 having an open slot 22 therein. For convenience of description'theslot 22 will be'r'efe'rred to as extending upwardly and rearwardly. The lower portion 30 of the head has an extension 23 which projects above the upper portion 24 to form a stop for the hinge as will presently appear.
In the attachment of hinge members to integral lugs on jars or other frangible vessels, it is desirable that means be provided for preventing undue stress being placed on the lug when the hinge is attached. These lugs are frequently broken off where the hinge member is clamped directly and positively to the lug, due to the excessive pressure that is likely to be inadvertently applied in screwing home the nut for holding the shank of the hinge in these lugs. In order to avoid applying excessive pressure to the lug a spring 25 is placed on the lower end ofthe shank 19 of the hinge 17 that extends through said opening 16 for attaching the hinge to the vessel. A nut 26 holds the parts in assembledrelation. A conventional washer 27 may be inserted between the spring 25 and the lower side of the lug 15 for forming a seat for 1 said spring. One or more washers 28 of fiber or other yielding material may be and preferably are inserted between the shoulder 29 and the lug 15. The spring will also permit the movement of the shank 19 through the opening 16 when the lid is closed in the event that it is too low to permit the lid to fit squarely on the vessel.
The upper or movable portion of the hinge is provided with a head 31' having a stud or pin 32 which is adapted to engage in the slot 22 of the head'21. Preferably the head 31 is bifurcated, forming the furcations 33 and 34, see Fig. 4, and the stud 32 is secured at each end in said furcations- Preferably the furcations are of such a length that the connecting portion 35 between them will form a stop for preventing the stud from being with-' drawn from the slot 22,,eXcept whenthe closure 14 is in its elevated position. The connecting portion between the furcations 33 and 34 is also provided with a shoulder 36 which is adapted to engage the extension 23 as shown 7 in dotted lines in Fig. 1 for limiting the rearward movement of the closure 14. The parts are so constructed that when in its uppermost position the closure will be passed dead cen-v ter so that it will be held by gravity in its elevated position. 7
Suitable means are provided for holding the head in any desired adjusted position. As
shown, a spring-pressed bolt 37 is provided for this purpose. The bolt 37 is slidably mounted in one of the furcations, as 84, and is provided with a conical end 38 for engaging in the slot 22 for holding the closure in closed position, or is adapted to resiliently engage one of a plurality of recesses 39 on the head30 for holding the closure in various adjusted positions. A spring 40 urges the bolt inwardly and causes the bolt to automatically engage the recesses 39 which are arranged in the arc of a circle. When the bolt engages ber 20 of the hinge is provided on its forward portion with a recess or groove 41 for receiving one edge of the closure 14.
Preferably a cushioning member 42 is inserted between the glass and the sides and bottom of the groove. A holding member 43 is provided for holding the hinge member 20 in'position on the closure. As shown, this member comprises a closure engaging portion 44 having a groove or channel 45 on its lower portion for engaging the forward edge of the closure 14. If desired, a cushioning member 46 may be inserted between the sides and bottom of the channel or groove 45 and the closure 14.
The closure 14 is clamped between the grooved portions of the members 44 and 20 by any suitable means as a rod 47 which may bethreaded at one end into the hinge memher 20 and its other end engage a socket in the member 44, the part being held in said socket in any suitable manner as by means of the screw 48 engagingthe end of said rod. he means for attaching the hinge to the closure is shown and described in my copending application Ser. No. 60,434.
The closure engaging member 44 is providedwith a projection 49 to which aspring clip 51 may be attached. The spring clip is curved outwardly and then inwardly to form a loop for constituting a handle for raising and lowering the closure.
The inner end of the clip 51 is adapted to engage in a recess 52 in the cylindrical portion of the vessel 10. The hinged portion 20 is also provided with an upstanding lug having an inclined slot 53 therein for supporting a placard. 7
Rubber or other suitable gasket 54 may be provided'between the upper edge of the vessel and the closure for forming an air and dust tight joint. This gasket may be attached either to the closure or the upper edge of the jar. As shown, the jar is provided with a recess 55 for receiving the lower edge of the gasket for holding the same in position.
The form of the device shown in Figs. 6 and 7 differs from that described above in that different means are provided for holding the lid in adjusted position. As shown, the head 21 of the fixed portion of the hinge is provided with a plurality of radial notches 56 which are adapted to be engaged by the keeper 57 slidably mounted through the movable portion of the hinge and the closure clamping members. The closure engaging member 58 is provided with a bore through which the outer end of the clamping rod 59 is adapted to extend. The parts are held in assembled relation by a nut 61. The clamping rod 59 is provided with an axial bore through which the keeper 57 is adapted to extend. The fixed portion of the hinge is also provided with a bore for receiving the inner end of the keeper.
The keeper 57 is held in projected position by a spring 62 which engages a pin 63 fixed in the keeper and which extends outwardly through a slot 64 in the clamping rod 59. The outer end of the keeper may be provided with the handle portion 65 for retracting the same. A further modified form of the device is shown in Fig. 8. In this form of the device the keeper 66 is normally held out of contact with the notches 56 by the spring 67 encircling the clamping rod 59 and seating against a pin 68 in the keeper 66.
In Fig. 9 is shown the application of the closure to a vessel 73 formed of sheet metal. The vessel 73 has its upper edge rolled into a bead as at 74 and the closure engaging member 4a is provided with a C-shaped spring clip 75 for engaging beneath said bead for holding the lid in closed position.
In Fig. 10 is shown a modified form of construction for attaching the hinge to the vessel. As shown, the head 21 of the fixed member 18 instead of being provided with an attaching shank portion, and with means for clamping the head in position on the vessel. The lower or fixed member 18 of the hinge is rigidly secured to a sectional band as by being integral therewith, or attached thereto by bolts or rivets. Preferably the ends of the band are turned outwardly as at 81 and 82 and perforated for the reception of a clamping bolt 83 for clamping the band on a vessel.
In all forms of the device the parts are so constructed that when the retaining bolt 87 or 50 engages in the slot "the closure cannot be removed from the vessel and the closure will be held in lowered position on the gasket 5%.
It is thought from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the construction and operation of my clevice will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and that various changes in size, shape, proportion and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a display vessel, a clo'sure therefor, a hinge for said closure, said hinge comprising a hinge member secured to said vessel, a cooperating hinge member on said closure, a pivotal pin and slot connection between said members, and meansfor holding said closure in various adjusted angular positions.
2. In a display device, a display'vessel having a cylindrical upper portion, a reduced tapered lower portion, a' hinge lug having an opening therein on said upper portion, a clos ure for said vessel, a hinge for said closure, said hinge comprising a stationary member and a movable member, said stationary mem ber having a. shank engaging said opening and a slotted portion, means for attaching said movable member to said closure, and a pivotpin on said movable member for engaging said slotted portion, one marginal wall of said slot extending beyond the other for forming an abutment for limiting the opening movement of said closure and for holding said closure in open position,
3. A hinge for a display vessel comprising a stationary member and a movable member, said stationary member having a shank provided with a sotted head, said head having a plurality of recesses arranged on the arc of a circle with the bottom of the slot in the slotted head as a center, a movable member, a stud on said movable member for engaging said slot, and means on said movable member for engaging said recesses for holding said movable member in adjusted position.
4:. In a hinge for display vessels, a hinge member comprising a stationary element and a movable element, one of said elements being provided with an open slot, a pivot pin carried by the other element for engaging said slot, means on one of said elements for engaging recesses on the other element for holding said movable element in a plurality of adjusted positions, and means for attaching said hin 'e to a display vessel.
5. In combination, a vessel of frangible material, a lug on said vessel, said lug having an opening therethrough, a closure for said vessel, a hinge for said closure, said hinge comprising a movable member, a stationary member having a threaded shank extending through said lug, a nut on said shank, a resilient element between said nut and lug, and means carried by one of said members for engaging the other member for holding said closure at any one of a plurality of adjusted positions.
6. In a hinge for a display vessel, a stationary part, means for attaching the same to a display vessel, a movable part, means for detachably connecting said movable part to said stationary part, and means for holding said movable part in a plurality of adjusted positions on said stationary part.
7. In a hinge for display vessels, a stationary part having a head portion provided with an open slot, a movable portion having apivot pin for engaging said slot, and means for engaging said slot and said head for holding said movable member in lowered position or in various adjusted positions,

A hinge for a display vessel comprising a stationary member having a slotted head provided with a series of recesses in the arc of a circle aboutthe lower portion of the slot, a movable hinge member, a pivot pin on said movable member for engaging said slot, a spring pressed detent for engaging said recesses for automatically locking said movable member in adjusted position and for engaging said slot for preventing removal of said movable member, means for connecting said stationary member to a vessel, and means for attaching said movable member to a closure for said vessel.
