This invention relates to a roller screen for the windows oit dwelling houses and for such other buildings as may need to be kept free from insect pests such as llies, mosquitoes and the like, and its obj ect is to provide a device ot this character having means for rolling up the screen mesh element, and means for guidinv and holding same in position at the sides ot' the window.
Another feature of the device, consists of an overlapping closure plate which bears down upon the roller at the top and thus prevents any unguarded space between the said roller and the top of the window casing.
These and other objects and advantages ot the invention will be fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a window casing with the device mounted therein and pulled down in operative position.
Fig. 2 shows a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged 'fragmentary section within the limits of the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Fig. 4 shows a section on the line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Fig. 5 shows a front view of the elements illustrated in Figure 3.
Fig. 6 shows a modified form ot the invention comprising a fully assembled screen unit. This view is on a scale larger than is shown 35 in Figures 1 and 2, but smaller than that employed in Figures 3, 4 and 5.
Fig. 7 shows a section on the line 77 of Figure 6.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings; the device is shown mounted within the casing ot a window 10 which comprises the top frame 11, the bottom ledge 12, sides 13 and 14 and sashes 15 and 16 having panes 45 17 and 18.
The elements of the invention are as follows:

pieces as seen at 23 and 24 which provides grooves as seen at 25 in which it is adapted to be slid up, or down at will. These guide pieces are secured to the window casing as shown. The body of the mesh element is reinforced at intervals by the cross bars 28, 29 and 30 which are suitably secured thereto. At the top of the window casing, the mesh element is secured to a roller 33 which may be of the usual spring controlled type, or otherwise, as desired.
The mesh element may be rolled up, or down at will and it is thus possible to easily clean the windows when required, and at seasons of the year when no screen is necessary, it may be rolled up and entirely out ot the way; but remains in instant readiness for use again when needed.
Secured above the roller is the closure plate 34, which may be of spring metal as illustrated in the ligures above described, or may be hinged, or pivoted in position. It rests upon the rolled portion of the mesh element and effectively closes the aperture above it; which aperture of necessity, varies in space, as more, or less of the screen is rolled up.
As illustrated in the views described, the side plates as that seen at 35, further ensure closure at the sides above the screen.
In Figure 3, the cross bar 28 is shown in section and is seen to be attached by means ct the rivets as at 37. It may, however, be secured in any other suitable manner. In this figure the mesh element 20 is shown partly rolled up, instead of fully extended as in Figures 1 and 2.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 6 and 7; an assembledunitconstruction is illustrated in which a casing 40 is bent downward at the ends 41 and 42 and at the back 43.
The roller 33 is pivotally mounted in the casing and the closure plate 44, which is the equivalent ot' that shown at 34, is also pivotally mounted at the ends in the said casing as seen at 45 and 46. The unit thus assembled may be mounted in the window casing by simply putting in place and attaching by means of the screws 47, 48 etc., or by similar means at the top of the casing element. In this form of installation: guides 100 at the sides are used as heretofore described. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent7 is as follows:
In a device of the character described, in
combination with a roller and a suitably` guided and reinforced mesh screen thereto attached, sideplates adaptable for mounting on the inner side walls of a window casing` and projecting outward beyond the front face of the said casing and covering the outer portions of the ends of the said roller and the end space occurring between the said mesh screen and a closure plate adjacent thereto, substantially as shown and described.
