Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIeE JOHN WALDHEIM, OF 'ELLZABE'lI-, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO UNDERNOOD 'ELLIOTT FISHER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAXTV'ARE TYPEWRITING MACHINE Application filed August 29, 1923. Serial No. 659,913.
rlhis invention relates to machines for typing upon continuous work-webs, each comprising a plurality of plies usually provided with successive printed forms superposed in 5 register, the plies being separate in some cases and in other cases being joined at their side edges. The invention is in the nature of an improvement on my Patent No. 1,362,547, dated December 14, 1920.
In said patent the composite web or workweb, comprising the web-plies, is introduced substantially horizontally to the bottom of the platen, over a table or support on which the carbon-carrier isy mounted for reciprocation, and over a substantially horizontal paper-table to support the web between the forward end of the carbon-carrier support and the bottom of the platen, thus eliminating the binding of the web-plies and interleaved carbon-sheets dueto the usual bends in the web at the rear of the platen. Provision is also made for reducing the bending of the web-plies at the delivery side of the platen by swinging forwardly to a limited extent a paper-table and an associatedleading-.end-gaging device independently of `the platen. As a result of the arrangement just described, it becomes unnecessary to displace the plat-en in the usual mannerpreparatory to effecting a relative shifting of the webplies and interleaved carbon-sheets.
An object of the present invention is to provide improved means of the same general Y nature as that described for effecting such relative shifting ofthe webplies and carbonsheets without displacement of the platen o1' forward swing of the paper-table and gaging means at the delivery side of the platen.
According to the form of the invention herein disclosed, the web-and-carbon-sheetintroducing means at the introductory side of the platen is substantially the same as in said patent, and provision is made vat the delivery side of the platen of a paper-table fixed to the platen-frame, and of a gaging device having two gages at a suitable distance apart such that, when, after the lrelease of the feed-rolls, the web-plies and interleaved carbon-sheets are shifted rearwardly by the carboncarrier to withdraw the leading ends of the carbon-sheets `from control by the platen, the feedrolls may be cast on, the web* plies advanced independently of the carbonsheets by the platen to bring the leading ends of the webplies into alignment with the nearest gage, and then the web-plies and carbonsheets may.'` beV advanced together until the leading edges of the web-plies are aligned with the other gage preparatory to tearing olf the irst set of forms and typing on the second set of forms.
Provision may also be made of one or more side gages to be set in suitable perforations in the rear paper-table over which the webplies pass from the carbon-carrier support to the bottom of the platen. Freferably each side gage has a forked lower end to permit springing of the tines when forced into position and consequent binding to maintain the side gage in such position.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
Inthe accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of an Underwood continuous billing typewriting machine modied to show one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the carbonssheets and web-plies in the positions assumed when retracted by the carbon-carrier after completing the typing on a set of forms and casting olf the feed-rolls.
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2, but showing the web-plies advanced relatively to the carbon-sheets by the platen and cast-on feed-rolls, the carbon-sheets being held against forward movement by means of the carbon-carrier.
Figure 4 yis a view similar to Figure 3, but showing the web-plies and carbon-sheets advanced by the platen and feed-rolls from their Figure 3 positions to positions suitable vfor tearing off the typed forms.
Upon depression of keys (not shown), type-bars 11 are swung upwardly and rearwardly to cause types l'thereon to strike a platen 13, journaled by means of an axle 14- inthe ends 15 of a platen-frame 16. The ends 15 of the platen-frame are joined at the rear by a transverse member 17 and beneath the platen by means of a rod 18, on Vwhich are mounted levers 19, carrying rea-r and Vfront feed-rolls land 21', respectively, the
effectiveness of the feed-rolls being controlled by means of a controlling shaft 22 extending between. downwardly-projectingi ends 23" of the levers 19. The' controlling shaft 22 is controlled in the usual manner by acastfof linger-pieceT241 connected., thereto by means oi'a link-25, pivotedtoanarrnQG;iiced on the shzii't'22.
. The platen-frame 16 is mountedninfa;trav` cling carriage 27, supported at its rear on a rail 28, fixed to the machineframe 29. During suchl advancek of the web-plies39, the carbon-carrier 45 is held by means offa handle'-u 71j thereon inits rearmost'fposition determined by a stop 72. In this connection it'should be not-edy that the carbon-sheets 40 iss are of such length that, when the carbonearrier is in its rearmost position, the leading ends of the carbon-sheets are positioned substantially as shown in Figure 3. v
After positioning the web-plies 39 and the carbon-sheets 40, as shown in Figure 3, the carbon-carrier t5 is released and the webplies and carbon-sheets advanced by the platen and feed-rolls to the positions indicated in Figure l.
The first set of forms is then severed by the knife 'TO and thereafter is in readiness for typing on the second set of. forms. After `completing the typing on the second set of forms with the web-plies and carbon-sheets positioned substantially as indicated in Figure l, the feed-rolls 2O and 2l are cast olf, by means of the finger-piece 24, and the webplies 39 and carbon-sheets retracted, by means of the handle 7l on the carbon-carrier, to the position shown in Figure 2. The feedrolls are then cast on and the web-plies advanced bythe platen to their Figure 8 positions, the carbon-sheets being held in their retracted posit-ions by means of the handle 7l. The handle 71 is then released and the web-plies and carbon-sheets advanced to their Figure 4l positions preparatory to severing the typed forms and starting the typing on the next set of forms. In this connection it should be noted that the distance between the gages G4 and 65 is equal to the distance around the bottom of the platen from the leading-edge positions of the carbon-sheets in Figure 8 to their leading-edge positions in Figure 4l.
Although the manner just described of positioning` the web-plies and carbon-sheets to start typing appears to be the most practicable, it should be understood that such positioningmay be done in other ways, as, for example, by positioning the forward edges of the nrst set of forms the proper distance beyond the ends of the carbon-sheets and positioning the carbon-sheets and webplies as shown in Figure 2. Obviously, if this method is followed, typing may be effected on the first set of forms.
To assist in guiding the composite web to the proper position on the platen, provision may be made of one or more side gages 73 positioned in suitable perforatirmsv in the rear paper-table 36. As shown in Figure l, each of the gages 73 is provided with a slot 7a extending toward its upper end to facilitate the springing towards or from each other of the tines 7 5, so that, when the reduced ends 76 are pressed into suitable openings in the paper-table 36, the resiliency of the tines willtend to hold the gage in set position.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
