All the carhon-sheets can then be made of uniform length to reach over the extended edge of the guide-plate but below the cutting edge of the knife, when the carbon-carrier IS in its rearmost position. The tearing off of the work-form from the web is thus not interfered with, and the proper feeding over the paper-table at the work-form and the bottom carbon-sheet is insured when the same are advanced by the platen. This feature may be applied to all forms of typewriters whether or not they have adjustable platens.

The typewriter-carriage also includes a rear papertable 19, and carries front and rear feedrolls 20 and 21, respectively, to co-operate with the platen in its normal position for feeding worksheets therearound.
To turn the laten 10, provision is made of a stub-shaft 22 journaled in the end plate 16 of the carriage, and having at its inner end a gear of) meshing with a broad pinion 2% on the rod 15. The broad pinion 24- also meshes with a gear 25 at the left hand end of the platen-axle, the gear 25 being of the same size as the gear 23. The platen may be rotated by the stub-shaft 22 through a finger-wheel 26 thereon attached, or by the usual line-spacing means, not
shown. A similar gearing provision may also be made at the right end of the carriage.
Connected to a cross-bar 32 of the carriage 18, by means of brackets 83, is a rearward extension 3-1 of the carriage 18, said rearward extension comprising rails 35 on which run grooved wheels 36 on the bottom of a carbon-carrier 37. The carbon-carrier 37 comprises carbon holders or bars 38, to which the rear ends of carbon-sheets 39 are attached, and between which webs or worksheets 40 are threaded.
The webs 4-0 and interleaved carbon-sheets 39 extend forwardly between side gages 13 mounted on a rock-shaft 51. Then Webs 40 and carbonsheets 39 pass over a raised portion all of the rear papertable 19 and between the latter and the platen around to the delivery side of the latter. From the delivery side of the platen the webs pass upwardly between the platen and the usual knife i5, which is mounted to be swung within slight limits by a knife-actuating rod 29. The papei table 16 is rigidly supported by a cross-bar l7, forming part of the platen-swing-frame and also constituting, in effect, a part of the front paper table 46. A. deflector-plate 72, having deflectors 7 1- formed thereon, is secured at one side of the cross-bar 47 and the paper-table 16 is secured at the other side of the cross bar 1-7. Further movement of the record-sheet 57 (see Figure 2) serves to move the latter between the clamping bail and the guide-plate 71 at the rear of the paper-table 4:6. It will be seen that the finger will guide the leading edge of the record-sheet 57 to the rear of the papertable +16. When the record-sheet 57 is properly adjusted, the linger-piece 65 may be released to permit the clamping bail 58 to press the record sheet against the guideplate 71 and hold it fixed relatively thereto. The frame 14 may then beswung to ts normal position and there held by means of the latches 52 and the latter, in their movement to eft'ectii 'e position, releasing the record-sheet 57 so as to be fed with the webs 40 upon line-space movement of the platen. After the insertion of the recordsheet 57, as just explained, and upon the return of the platen 10 to its normal position, typing may be effected on the properly positioned set of superposed forms in the usual manner, and, upon the completion of such typing the displacing frame It may be swung forwardly to the position shown in Figure 2, the clamping bail 58 being made elfective automatically upon the releasing of the frame l-l by the latches 52 and The webs 40 may be drawn forwardly and gaged by means of the gage 50, and the carbon-sheets 39 restored to their rearward position by means of the carbon-carrier 37. The platen may then be restored to its normal position and the used forms severed over the knife this operation being repeated for each set of superpos d forms.
To prevent fouling of the record-sheet 57 when moved past the bar 61 of the clamping bail, through the normal tendency of the forward edge of the record-sheet to engage the screw -19, by which the gage-bar +8 is secured to the rear of the paper-table .6. provision has been made of suitable inclined deflectors 7st formed of a stamped tongue section of the supporting deflector-plate 7 2 and which pass upwardly through the openings in the guide-plate 71 on opposite sides of the gage-bar 48.
The almvoalisclosed in'iprovement in the condensed record-sheet-inserting mechanism includes the novel designed co-operating guide-plate 71 extending considerably beyond the lower edge of the paper-table 46, shaped and proportioned not only to enable easy and quick insertion of the record-sheet 7 as to avoid catching of the edge of the record-sheet 57 with the lower edge of the paper-table it which may otherwise happen, but also to obviate the trouble that may be caused as a result of the engagement of the leading edge -01 the bottom carbon 39 with the lower edge of the paper-table -16. The receiving edge of the 'uide-plate 71 extends sutliciently beyond the lower edge of the paper-table l6 to reach a position in advance of the cutting edge of the knife 45, see Figure 1. All the carbon-sheets 39 may be made to have a uniform reach overthe extended edge of the guide-plate 71 at the platen end, but must be limited to extend below the knifeedge when the earbon-carrier 37 IS in 1ts rearward posit1on. The
tearing of sections from the web will not be interfered with and proper feeding of the work-form and of the bottom carbon 39 over the paper-table 46 will be insured when advanced by the platen.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described our invention, We claim:
1. In a composite Web typewriting ma chine having a displaceable platen and typing instrnmentalities, a work-table at the delivery side of the platen, means operitive during displacement of the platen to support the composite web and permit straightening thereof beneath the platen, a chute-plate secured at the rear of said worktable to extend beyond the end thereof contiguous to the platen, and a sheet-introductory member projecting beyond the chuteplate to receive a record-sheet inserted between said platen and said sheet-introductory member and guide said record-sheet over the receiving edge of said chute-plate.
2. In a composite web typewriting machine having a displaceable platen and typing instrumentalities, a work-table at the delivery side of the platen, means operative during displacement of the platen to support the composite web and permit straightening thereof beneath the displaced platen, a chute-plate secured at the rear of said. work-table to extend rearwardly beyond the end thereof contiguous to the platen and lengthwise of the platen, and a sheet-introductory guise-finger at one side of said chute-plate co-operative with the platen to form a bite with the leading portion of a. cant-ed record-sheet and guide said recordshect over the receiving edge of said chuteplate behind said work-table.
3. In a composite web typewriting machine having a. displaceable platen and typing instrumentalities, a work-table at the delivery side of the platen, means operative during displacement of the platen to support the composite web and permit straightening thereof beneath the platen, a chute-plate secured at the rear of said work-table to extend beyond the end thereof contiguous to the platen, a sheet-introductory member proecting beyond the chute-plate to receive a cordheet nserte xb tw id pl and said sheet-introductory member and guide, said record-sheet over the receiving edge. In a typewriting machine for writing upon a number of interleaved carbon superposed webs or continuous sheets, in combination, a platen, a front piper-table for receiving the composite webs fed around the platen on the front side thereof, a guideplate extending lengtlnvise and adjacent the platen beyond the iower edge of said papertable for directing the composite webs to the front side of the paper-table and a recordsheet to the rear side of the same, and a knife extending over and across the webs mounted in fixed spaced relation to the guideplate, said guide-plate having a receiving edge extending forward of the cutting edge of the knife to insure proper feeding over the paper-table of said webs with the bottom carbon-sheet when the same are advanced by the platen after tearing oil a section of the webs.

The combination with a typewriting machine including a platen, typing instrumentalities, a work-table at the delivery side of the platen and a main chute for guiding a worksheet from the rear of the platen to the front of said work-table, of a supplementary sheet-inserter comprising a chuteplate detachably mounted on said work-table to extend above said main chute, a guide-finger integral with said chute-plate and at one side of the latter co-operative with the platen to form a bite for the leading portion of a canted supplementary sheet and guide said supplementary sheet over the receiving e ge of said chute-plate to the rear of said k-tahle, deflecting means at the rear of said work-table to direct the leading edge of said supplementary sheet rearwardly over the platen during feeding movement, and clamping means to restrain feeding movement of said supplementary sheet when said main sheet is freed from the platen and shifted.

A supplementary chute-attachment for a composite web typewriting machine including a displaceable platen and a worktable displaceable with the platen, comprising a deflector-plate having a plurality of deflectors struck outwardly from the body thereof, a chute-plate (to-operative with said deflector-plate and having openings to receive said deflectors, and an integral guidefinger on said chute-plate, said chute-plate and deflector-plate being attachable as a unit to said work-t-able.
16. A supplementary chute-attachment for a composite web typewriting machine including a displaceable platen and a worktable displaceable with the platen, comprising a deflector-plate having a plurality of deflectors struck outwardly from the body thereof, a chute-plate (Jo-operative with said deflector-plate and having openings to receive said deflectors, and an integral guidefinger on said chute-plate, said chute-plate and deflector-plate being attachable as a unit to said work-table, said guide-finger cooperative with said platen to form a bite with an inserted portion of a record-sheet and guide said record-sheet over said chuteplate, and said deflectors inclined to direct the leading edge of the record-sheet rearwardly over the platen.
17. A supplementary chute-attachment for a composite web typewriting machine including a displaceable platen and a work-table displaceable with the platen, comprising a deflector-plate having a plurality of deflectors struck outwardly from the body thereof, a chute-plate co-operative with said deflectorplate and having openings to receive said deflectors, an integral guide-finger on said chute plate, said chute-plate and deflectorplate being attachable as a unit to said worktable, said guide-finger co-operative with said platen to form a bite with an inserted portion of a record-sheet and guide said recordshcet over said chute-plate, and said deflectors inclined to direct the leading edge of the record-sheet rearwardly over the platen, and means operative during displacement of said platen and work-table to clamp said record-sheet to said chute-plate.
