Description
Dec. 10, 1929. M. e. BARNEY 1,739,346
METHOD OF SUPPLYING THREAD FOR MENDING STOCKINGS Filed-Nov. 10, 1928 Mary 4. Barney INVENTOR wn-mzssn a4 m/ M ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 10, 1929 PATENT OFFICE MARY G. BARNEY, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS METHOD OF SUPPLYING THREAD FOR MENDIING STOCKINGS Application filed November 10, 1928.
This invention relates to a method of obtaining threads for mending stockings and other knit articles which are provided with hems, an object of the invention being to provid means for obtaining threads from the stocking or article to be mended without marrin the appearance of the article, the invention providing means for supplying threads for this purpose so that the article may be mended with threads of its exact color and texture.
Vfith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a stocking show- 2 ing the latter arranged for obtaining mending threads in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the manner of obtaining a thread.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figurel and showing the manner of obtaining a mending thread.
Referring to the dra ings in detail where- 30 in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates an ordinary stocking which is supplied at its top with a hem 11, the latter being held in place by the usual row of stitching 12.
Frequently, stockings have their appearance marred by runs, so that an expensive pair of stockings is practically ruined. The missing thread of the run may be supplied, but it is diflicult to match the thread of the 49 stocking in its exact color and texture. The
present invention therefore provides means for obtaining a thread or threads from the stocking to be mended. For this purpose, the hem is provided with one or more rows of 5 stitches 13. These stitches are spaced from and are substantially parallel with the stitches 12 and like these last referred to stitches act to hold the hem in place. The hem is opened upon its inside between the 50 rows of stitches 12 and 13 and one or more Serial No. 318,488.
threads are unraveled from the material between these rows as indicated at 14. The thread may be obtained from either side of the opening 15, and as many threads as necessary may be removed without damaging the stocking or marring its appearance, the opening being upon the inside of the hem. In addition, the hem is prevented from pulling away from the stocking by the stitches 12 so that the stocking is not in any manner weakened, the effect being merely to shorten the width of the hem.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is The herein described method of obtaining thread for mending knitted articles provided with hems stitched to the body longitudinally of said hem, consisting of providing a row of stitches passing through the hem substantially parallel with and spaced from the original stitching of the hem, opening the material and removing one or more threads between the parallel rows of stitching.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MARY G. BARNEY.
