LEVEQUE, OF WENHAM, MASSACH'O'SETTS, ASSIGNOB TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF PATEBBON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY snwm'o mom Original application flied February 2, Serial No. 690,265. Divided and this application filed October 19, 1025. Serial m. 68,228.
The present invention relates to shoe sewing machines and is herein shown as embodied in a sole sewing machine of the socalled McKay type, the stitch formlng devices of which comprise a straight hook needle and the work support of which consists of a rotatable horn arranged to extend within the shoe and provided at its tip with a needle threading device or whirl for laying the thread in the hook of the needle. In addit on, such machines include shoe feeding devices and a presser foot which is movable relatively to the horn to clamp the work and release it rangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. The several features of the present invention and the'advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the following descript on taken in connection with the accompanymg drawings which illustrate the several features of the invention as apphed to a McKay sewing machine.
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the head of the machine with a portion of the horn and of the work being operated upon shown in section; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the front ortlon of thehead of the machine; Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating in front elevation certain portions of the presser foot lifting mechanism, the mechanism for varymg the throw of the needle and the feeding mechanism.
For a detailed description of the complete machine to which the present invention has i been applied, reference may be had to the applicants pending application Serial No. 690,265, filed February 2, 1924, of which the present application is a division.
The stra1ght hook needle of the machine s clamped on the lower end of a needle bar 6 which-is reciprocated from a crank pm 8 on [the forward end of the sewing shaft 10 through the following connections, which co mections are provided for the purpose of glvlng a variable throw to the needle bar as Work varies in thickness, and also for the urpose of permitting the needle bar to be 'sconnected from the sewing shaft at the top of its stroke at the end of the sewing operation. A block 12 is secured to the needle bar and is connected by a link 14 to a lever 16 pivoted at 18 to a lever 20, which lever is secured at its right hand end to a pivot shaft 22 mounted in the machine frame.
he right hand end of the lever 16, as viewed from the front of the machine, is provided with a curved slot 24 which is engaged by a block 26 pivotally mounted in the upper end of an arm 28 which is adjusted as the work varles in thickness by connections to the presser foot hereinafter described. When the axis of the block 26 is coincident with the axis of the pivot shaft 22 the lever 16 will move with the lever 20 as the lever 20 is oscillated. If the axis of the block 26 is not in alignment with the axis of the pivot shaft 22 the lever 16 will move with relation to the lever 20 during the oscillation of the lever '20 and the movement imparted to the needle bar increased or diminished accordingly. A lever 30 is mounted at the side of" the lever 20 and at its right-hand end is secured to a sleeve 32 surrounding the pivot shaft 22 of the lever 20.. A cam slot 34 is formed in the lever 30, which cam slot is engaged by the crank pin 8 so that during the rotation of the cam shaft the lever 30 is continuously oscillated. To cause the lever 20 to oscillate with the lever 30 a latch 36 is mounted upon the left hand end of the lever 20 and is arranged to engage a pin 38 on the lever 30. During the sewing operation the latch is held in engagement with the pin b means of a spring surrounding the pivot o the latch. The presser foot bar is indicated at 40 and has secured thereto a block provided with a laterally extending arm 42 in the outer end of needle,
the arm 28 is moved to adjust the block 26 along the slot 24 of the lever 16 and thus vary the upward stroke of the needle bar.
The presser foot is forced downwardly 5 against the work by means of a spring 48 surrounding the presser foot bar, and also by a spring which surrounds a shaft 50. An arm 52 is secured to the shaft 50 and is connected to a block 54 on the lower end of the presser foot bar by means of a link 56.
The nature and object of the invention having been indicated and the parts of the machine embodying the invention having been described, what is claimed is:
1. A sewing machine having, in combination, a driving shaft arranged at right angles to the direction in which the work is fed through the machine, a crank pin at the end of the shaft, a lever oscillating in a plane at right angles to the shaft provided with a cam slot engaged by thecrank pin, a needle bar, and connections between the lever and needle bar.
2. A sewing machine having, in combination, a sewing shaft, a crank pin on the shaft,
a lever oscillated in a plane at right angles to the shaft provided with a cam slot engaged by the crank pin, a needle bar, connections between the lever and the needle bar, and
means controlled by the thickness of the work for actuating said connections to vary the stroke of the needle.
3. A sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming devices including a needle, needle actuating mechanism comprising a constant throw lever, a variable throw lever directly pivoted thereon and extending substantially parallel therewith, needle actuating connections between said variable throw lever and the needle, a fulcrum for said variable throw lever fixed except as it is moved to vary the needle throw, and means controlled by the thickness of the work for moving said fulcrum to vary the needle throw.
4. A sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming devices including a needle, needle actuating mechanism comprising a constant throw member, a lever pivoted thereon, a needle bar, connections from one end of the lever to the needle bar, a fulcrum for the other end of the lever, and means controlled by the thickness of the work pivot of the lever.
5. A sewing machine having, in combination, a sewing shaft, a crank pin on the shaft, a lever oscillating in a plane at right angles to the shaft provided with a cam slot engaged by the crank pin, a needle bar, and connections between the lever and the needle bar adjustable to vary the stroke of the needle.
6. A sewing machine having, in combination stitch forming devices including a needle actuating mechanism comprising a constant throw lover, a variable throw lever directly pivoted thereon and extending substantially parallel therewith, needle actuating connections between said variable throw lever and the needle, and a fulcrum for said variable throw lever adjustable to vary the stroke of the needle and fixedexcept as it is adjusted.
A sewing machine having, in combination, stitch formin devices including a needle, needle actuatlng mechanism comprising a constant throw member, a lever pivoted thereon, a needle bar, connections from one end of the lever to the needle bar, and a fulcrum for the other end of the lever adjustable toward and from the pivot of the lever.
8. A sewing machine having in combination, a sewing shaft, a crank pin at the end of the shaft, a lever oscillating in a plane at right angles to the shaft provided with a cam slot engaged by the crank pin, a constant throw lever actuated by the slotted lever, a variable throw lever pivoted on the constant throw lever, and a fulcrum for the variable throw leveradjustable to vary the stroke of the needle.
9..
