To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. Wnrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing machines, and more particularly to that class of machinesused for stitching inner soles of shoes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved machine for stitching a strip of canvas to one side of the inner sole along the edges thereof, and while this improved machine may be used for a Wide variety of work it is in the present instance shown especially organized for the stitching to insoles of fiber of a reinforced canvas strip or tape in such a way that a rib of thecanvas remains upstanding for the attachment of the shoe upper.

In the preferred form thereof herein shown and described the machine base 1 carries the trunk 2 of the machine and the hollow overhanging arm 3 terminating in a 'head 4, in which the needlebar reciprocates. A rotary shaft 6 is mounted in the machine base and is supported by suitable bearings. Connections, (not shown), but such as are usual in Metropolitan sewing machines, entend from the bottom shaft crank pins and cooperate with similar crank pins car ried by a top shaft 8, which is also mounted in suitable bearings carried by the hollow arm, and on this too shaft is secured a combined belt and hand wheel 5. Secured to the lower shaft 6 is an eccentric 9, which operates the connection 10 which has an end 11 connected by a shoulder screw 12 to an arm 13. This arm 13 is secured to the looper shaft 14 mounted in suitable bearings 15 of a looper bracket 16 secured to the base 1 Looper holders 17 are secured to the looper shaft 14 and carry suitable loopers 18 to cooperate with the needles 19 carried by the needle bar 20, which works in bearings 2 formed as a part of the head a. The needle bar is reciprocated by a pitrnan 23 connected with it and with a crank pin 24 carried by a disk 25 secured to the top shaft 8, and this gives the required motion to the needle bar, which is timed. so as to coiiperate with the loopers 18 to make the stitches.
The bottom feed mechanism comprises a rocker frame 26 pivoted as at 27 to the base 1, and the upper end thereof carries a pin 28 for movement therewith. A pitman connection 29 connects this pin 28 with the usual adjustable crank 30 for regulating the length of movement of the feed 31. The feed is secured as at 32 to a feed bar 33, which carries an extended plate 34: to cooperate with the feed lifter eccentric 35, also secured to the shaft 6 for rotary movement there- 'with. A bottom plate 36 attached to the feed bar limits the upward movement of the feed bar so that its action is positive at high speed. The feed bar has its rear end 37 journale d on the pin 28 of the rocker frame 26 so that it is actuated by such rocker frame.
It is" to be particularly observed that the peculiar construction of this bottom feed mechanism is such that nearly all of its working parts are located inffront toward the operator and to the right of the needles to provide free access or working space at the starting position andv facilitate the turning of the work at high speed so as not-to interfere with the rib of the. canvas tape when making the sharp turns at the top of the inner sole. It will be seen that the rib of the canvas tape extends down into and below the surface of the work plate of the machine and that the feed dog 31 is proyided with a slot 38 for the reception of the rib 39 of such canvas tape.
The construction of this tape (see Fig. 7) comprises a flared portion 40, a portion 11 bent at right angles thereto and then bent into U-shaped form as at 42, with an outwardly bent portion 43' and a bent over part 44:, while the edge of the tape is curved over, as at 45, into the U-shaped part thereby to conceal the edge 46, all connected by a stitchline 47 stitching the several portions together and holding the same in position.
The construction of the feed dog 31 (see Fig. 8) is especially adapted for this tape, having a part 48 with feed teeth slightly lower than the part 49. The part 4.8 co-acts with the portion 40 of the tape, while the lower portion of the feed 48 co-acts with the double fold of the tape 44. The difference in the height of. the two sections of the feed is to meet the difi'erence in thickness of the material to be fed, so as to have a uniform action thereon. The bottom feed operates in the space 50 of the throat plate 51, (see Fig. 6), which is also provided with a slot 52 throughout its length to receive the portion 42 of the tape 39. This slot has its edges flared as at 52' for free entrance. A. top plate 53 is secured to the throat plate and this plate has an opening 54 to facilitate starting the tape. The throat plate is recessed as at 55 suficiently for the free passage of the portion 40 of the tape and is also recessed as at 56 for free passage of the portion 44 of the tape underneath the top plate 53. It will be understood that to properly guide the folded canvas strip it must be controlled accurately up to the point of stitching, and the construction of the parts must be such as not to interfere with making the sharp turns at the front of the inner soles and that the entire feeding action must be confined very close to the position of stitching. The throat plate 51 is attached to thecloth plate by screws 57. This cloth plate 58 is also of special construction, being secured at one end to an apron 58, which is an extension of thetrunk 2. The cloth plate has a curved front edge 60, notched as at 61 to engage a stop finger 62 carried by a work control handle 63. Stop lugs 64: provided with adjusting screws 65 afiord a means for stopping the movement of the handle 63 when shifted to the right or left. This hansprin stop dle 63 is of hollow construction. to receive'a 66 which surrounds the stem ofthe ger so as. to force it'inwardly against the edge 60 of the cloth plate so that the handle will remain-in-either of the three positions shown in Fig.2. The cloth plate 58 is bent downward as at 69 just at the needle line to have anangular portion 70 and a vertical portion 71, (see Fig. 3), which is attached to the machine base by screws 72.
The front end of theycloth plate is broken away in Fig. 3 to'show clearly the feeding mechanism. The handle 63 has an extended portion 73 tapped to receive a shoulder screw, as at 7 1, which operates freely in the cloth plate. A screw 75 attaches an end 73 of this handle to a slide '76, which is milledout to receive an arm 77 adjustably held therein by a screw 78. A roller 7 9 is carried by this arm-77 androtates freely on a studf80 and is inposition adjacent the needles to guide'the edge of the work and facilitate the guiding'of the curved edge of same. All of the parts connected with the handle 63 are located underneath the cloth plate 58, while the roller stud SO'operating through a slot in the cloth plate (not shown) serves as a guide for the roller in its movement to and from the needles. The purpose of this roller guide isto guide the edge of the fiber board inner sole insuch .a manner as to permit the starting of the stitching of the tape at 81, (see Fig. 12). 'Alittle way in from the edge, as the stitching proceeds, the handle 63 is gradually shifted, bringing the roller 7 9 closer to the inside as it approaches the turn 82 and still closer as it approaches the portion 83, and then gradu- In order to feed the heavy fiber inner sole and the heavy folded canvas tape and have one move at a uniform speed with the other, it is necessary to have either a needle feed or a top feed. it has been'found in practies that with a two-needle machine arranged to have the needles feed the work the fiber inner soles become damaged while stitching around the curves, as it will be clear that the needle stitching on the inside of the curve must work at a difierent speed than the needle stitching at the outside or the curve, which is the longer of the two, with the result that the inside needle he quently punches holes soclose together that the fiber board is weakened and impairs its strength to such an extent that it cannot be used. The resistance of making the sharp turns with the needle feed machine tends also to break the needles, interferes with the stitches, and the result is damaged work. Tn
a very powerful top teed co-acting with the neaaeee bottom feed so as to clamp thematerials to be stitched together and feed the same while the needles are out of the work. Feed teeth are provided on the bottom feed dog which come against the canvas tape and a smooth feed'foot operates on the fiber board on top so as not to mar the same in making the sharp turns. A presser finger is also employed to hold the work down. As the feed foot is raising the presser finger strips the work from the needles so that a step by step motion is provided and the work can be readily turned so as to guide it freely and rapidly in a uniform manner.
The top feed comprises a feed foot secured to a bar 86 operating in a tube 87 for verticalrise and fall. A connecting rod 88 has its upper end 90 bent at right angles for attachment to a connection 89 and extends down through the tube and is connected with the bar 86 so as to lift the feed foot 85 against the action of the spring 91, -(see Fig. 3). One end of this spring abuts against the bottom end of the connection 89 while the other end abuts against the top end of the bar 86. The rod 88 is free to move in the bar 86, its lower end 92 being headed over to limit the downward movement of-the bar 86., while the bent upper end 90 of this rod 88 operates in a slot 93 of the tube 87 to prevent axial movement of the same. The tube 87 is pivotally supported on a bracket 121 by conical screws 91so that the tube may rock thereon. A lever 95 operated-by an adjustable crank 96 carried by a disk 97 mounted for rotary motion, gives substantially a rotary movement to the pin 98 and the connection.89.
The end 99 of the lever 95 reciprocates in a head 100 having a '1' slot 101. This head 100 is carried by a rock shaft 102, (see Fig. 1), which rocks in a bearing 103 integral with the head 4. A collar 10 1 is secured to I the rock shaft to control the end movement thereof. The disk 97 is secured to a shaft 105, (see Fig. 2), which operates in bearings 106 also integral with the top arm of the machine. This shaft is provided with a gear 107 in mesh with a driving gear indicated by-the dotted lines 108, (see Fig. 3) secured to the top shaft 8 carrying the drive wheel 5, so that as the top shaft 8 rotates the shaft 105 will also rotate, giving motion to the disk 97 and substantially an elliptical or four-motion feeding stroke to the top feed 85. Adjacent to the crank disk 97 is an eccentric 109, (see Fig. 2), secured to the shaft 105 to give movement to a connection 110, which is of tubular form, as at 111 (see 11) to receive the stem 112 of the other part 113 of this connection. A. spring 111 is interposed between the shoulders of these two parts, while a screw 115 passes through a slot 116 and limits the action of this spring; A pin 117 secures this conne tion to a rocker arm 119, which is pivoted as plvotally attached thereto, as at 122, a U- shaped plate 123, which carries the presser finger 124:. In order that the presser finger may have a movement parallel to the needles asecond rocker arm 126 is employed, pivot ed as at 127 to the U-shaped plate and to the bracket 121, as at 128.
1F rom the foregoing it will be clear that the crank 96 and the eccentric 109 are so timed as to move the presser finger downward as the feed foot 85 moves upward, and vice versa. The lengthof stroke or action of the top feed'foot 85 may be regulated by adjusting the crank 96 to and from the center of the disk 97.
In the stitching of inner soles, the beginning and ending of the stitching operation must start from the edge of the inner sole. The machine must be stopped, the needles and feed foot raised and the sewing thread severed to remove and replace the work. To facilitate this it have provided a thread pull 03 connected with the top feed foot l1ftQ1,'S0"l3l1tit the lifting of the feed foot will simultaneously therewith pull 01f thread from the supply to provide suficient to insure positive stitching on the next inner sole after one has been removed and another replaced in the machine. The needle threads 129 (see Fig. 2) are led from the supply to the tensions130, then to the eyelet 131 carried by the pulled arm 132, then through the eyelet 133, to the needle bar 131, and then to the needles 19. The pullofi lever 132 is ivoted at 135 to the top arm and is provided with an extended end 136 shaped so as to co-act with a latch lever 137, which is pivoted to the top arm as at 138. The other end of this latch 137 is so shaped as at 139 to overhang the foot lifting lever 140, (see Figs. 1 and 2), so as to be controlled by the movement'of such feed foot lifter 110, and this end 139 of the latch lever is in position to rock the latch lever on its pivot 138 in the direction of the arrow (see Fig. 1). The foot lifting lever 140 is pivoted to the top arm, as at 141, having a connection, as at 1-12, extending downwardly, as at 1 13 (see Figs. 1 and 3) and connecting, as at 111-, to a lever carried by the pivot 128. This lever 145 has an extending por- 'tion carrying a roller 1 1-6 which co-acts with an overhanging or projecting portion 1 17 of the top feed foot 85, (see Fig. 1), so as to lift the foot against the action of its spring 91, and also co-acts with the rocker arm 126 to lift the the action of its spring 114: so as to give freedom to remove and insert the work while the needles are resting. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching-mechanism, feeding mechanism including a top feed comprising a pivotally feed foot supported thereby for shiftable movement therewith and movement relatively thereto, a lever connected with said feed foot, a rock shaft connected with one end of said lever, and a rotary shaft connected with the other end of said lever for giving a four-motion elliptical movement to said feed foot.

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feed mechanism including a top feed comprising a prv'otally supported tube, a feed foot supported thereby for shiftable movement therewith and movement relatively thereto, a lever conand a throat plate including atop feed comprisinga pivotally supported tube, a feed foot supported thereby for shiftable movement therewith andmovement relatively thereto, a lever connected with said'feed foot, a rock shaft connected with one end of said lever, arotary shaft connected with the other end of said lever for giving a four-motion elliptical movement to said feed foot, a spring within said tube and coiiperating with said foot, a presser finger, and means connecting said presser finger with said rotary shaft.

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism including a top feed comprising a pivotally supported tube, a feed foot supported thereby for shiftable movement therewith: and movement relatively thereto, a lever connected with said feed food, a rock shaft connected wlth one end of said lever, a rotary shaft connected with the other end of saidlever' for giving a four-motion elliptical movement to said feed foot, a spring within said tube and cooperating with said foot, a presser finger means connecting said pressed finger with said rotary shaft, and means connecting said presser finger With a fixed point of support thereby to give the presser finger parallel motion with the needle. 7

27. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism including a four motion top feed, means for lifting said top feed, and thread pull-off means connected with said top feed lifting means.
28. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism including a four motion top feed, means for pull-off conlifting said top feed, and thread pull-ofi means operatively connected with one of said last two parts and operative on the lifting of the top feed. a

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism including a top feed, means for lifting the same and comprising a lever, a' thread. pull? ofl lever, and a latch lever operatively connected with the lifting lever for actuating thethread pull-ofi' lever on the lifting of the top feed.

Ina sewing machine, the combination of a rotary driving shaft, a. rotary shaft operatively connected therewith at one side thereof, a rocker shaft at the other side thereof, a pivotally supported lever connected with said rotary shaft and with said rocker shaft, a top feed, a pivotally supported member connected with said top feed and with said lever, and a presser finger operatively connected with said second rotary shaft.

In a sewing machine, the combination of a rotary driving shaft, a rotary shaft operatively connected therewith at one side thereof, a rocker shaft at the other side thereof, a pivotally supported lever connected with said rotary shaft and with said rocker shaft, a top feed, a pivotally sup with said top feed shaft, and means for giving said presser finger parallel motion with the needle.

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitchingmechanism, feeding mechanism comprising an under feed constructed to receive a rib of the work and feed the work at both sides of the rib, a throat plate constructed to permit the passage of a rib of the work from end to end thereof, a top feed, means for. operating said feeds, a presser finger cooperating with said top feed, and means for operating it, the means for operating the top feed consisting of a pair of connected rotary shafts, a rock shaft, a lever connecting one of said rotary shafts and rock shaft, and apivotally supported member between the top feed and said lever.

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism comprising an under. feed constructed to receive a rib of the work and different thicknesses of the work, a throat plate constructed to permit the passage of a rib of the work from end to end thereof and to receive different thicknesses of the work, a top feed, means for operating said feeds, a presser finger cooperatin with said top feed, and means for operating it, the means for operating the top feed consisting of a pair of connected rotary shafts, a rock shaft, a lever connecting one of said rotary shafts and rock shaft, and a pivotally supported member between the top feed and said lever, and the means for operating the resser finger consisting of an eccentric carried by one of said rotary shafts, a pair of rocker members pivotally connected with the presser finger and with a fixed point of support, and a spring connector between said eccentric and one of said rocker members.

In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism, feeding mechanism comprising an under feedconstructed to receive a rib of the work and different thicknesses of the work, a throat plate constructed to permit the passage of-a rib of the work from end to end thereof and to receive different thicknesses of the work, a top feed, means for operatin said feeds, a presser finger cooperating with said top feed, means for operating it, the means for operating the top feed consisting of a pair of connected rotary shafts, a rock shaft, a lever connecting one of said rotary shafts and rock shaft and a pivotally supported member between the top feed and said lever, the means for operating the presser finger consisting of an eccentric carried by one of said rotary shafts, a pair of rocker members pivotally connected with the presser finger and with a fixed point of support and a spring connector between said eccentric and one of said rocker members, means for lifting said top feed and presser finger, means coiiperating therewith for pulling ofi additional thread on the lifting of said top feed and presser finger, and means for iding the work and comprising a manual y operated shiftable roller.

In a sewing machine the combination with stitching mechanism, of feeding mechan1sm comprising an underfeed consisting of a feed dog having a slot for the reception of a work rib projecting at an angle to the side portions of the work, and a pair of feeding portions at opposite sides of said slot for feeding the work at opposite sides of the rib.
