The crank-arm 60 upon the looper-actuating rock-shaft 18 has securedthereon by means of screws 98 the foot 99 of a rearwardly extending pull-off arm 100 passing through a slot 101 in the head of the bracketarm and adapted for vibratory movement between the spaced limbs of an arched guide-member 102 formed with alined thread-apertures 103 and provided with a foot-piece 101 secured by means. of screws 105 to the head at of the bracket-arm. looper-thread passes from the source of supply through the tension device 106, thence. through the apertures 103 of the guidemember 102, and through a guide-aperture 107 in the upper portion of the face-plate 5 to an aperture 108 in a flat nipper-spring 109 whose shank 110 is secured upon the outer side of the face-plate 5-by suitable means. As the thread emerges from the aperture 108' it rests against the forward face of the nipper-spring 109 and passes to theguide-eye 95 of the looper-thread takeup device as before explained. The machine is provided with a common form of feeding mechanism comprising the feed-dog 128 mounted upon the feed-bar 129 connected with the feed-rocker 130 actuated by suitable connections with the eccentric 131 upon the main-shaft, the feed-bar being provided with a yoke 132 embracing the feed-lifting eccentric 133 upon the' mainshaft'adjacent the crank-plate 7.
The pressen-bar 134 is suitably journaled in the head 4 of the bracket-arm and pressed downwardly by means of the flat spring 13:) and has secured to its reduced lower end by means of the screw 136 the shank 137 of a compensating presser-foot formed withparallel vertical guidewaysto each of which is fitted an upright arm 138 of one of the foot plates 139 and 140 which are arranged side by side, the members 138 having rear wardly projecting pins 141 entering slots 142 in a plate 143 fulcrumed upon the presser-footshank 137 by means of the studscrew 144; The foot-plate 139'is the broaden of the two and has at its inner edge the stitch-receiving tongue 145 separated from the body of the foot by the'needle. aperture 146, another needle aperture .being afforded by the space 147 between said tongue and the adjacent edge of the other foot-plate 140. From the foregoing-description, it will be readily understood that the present improvement is susceptible of considerable modification of .the construction and arrangement of its various parts within the scope of the invention, and that certain of the features omitted without materially affecting the op-- eration of the others.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is described may be modified or- 1. In a sewing machine, the combination with the frame comprising a base provided with needle-bar bearings and an overhanging bracket-arm, a main-shaft journaled in the base, a looper-actuating rock-shaft jour: naled in and extending longitudinally of 'ioo the bracket-arm, and an'opera ive connection between said shafts, of a reciprocating needle-bar journaled in said bearings and carrying a needle, a looper-supporting rock shaft journaled in the bracket-arm; a looper mounted upon said supporting rock-shaft and adapted to oscillate upon an axis transverse'thereto and to seize thread-loops from the needle, means connected with the looperactuating rock-shaft for imparting to said looper its endwise operative movements, and
.means Ior rocking the looper-supportmg rock-shaft to impart sidewise movements to the looper.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination with the frame comprising a base provided with needle-bar bearings and an overhanging bracket-arm, a main-shaft journaled in the base, a looper-actuating rock-shaft journaled in and extending longitudinally of the bracketarm, a looper-supporting rock-shaft also journaled in the bracket-arm parallel with the looper-actuating rock-shaft, and operative connections between the mainshaft and said rock-shafts, respectively, of a reciprocating needle-bar journaled in said bearings and carrying a needle, {HIOPEI'iItlVB connection between said needle-bar and the main-shaft, a normally stationary threadguide adjustably mounted upon 'said base,' a needle-thread take-up arm rigidly mounted upon the needle-bar and provided with a thread-guiding eye, a looper pivotally mounted upon the looper-supporting shaft, and an operative connection between said looper and the looper-actuating rock-shaft.
l. In a sewin machine, the combination with the frame omprising a base provided with needle-bar bearings and an overhanging bracket-arm, and a main-shaft, of a reciprocating needle-bar journaled in saidbearings and carrying a needle, an operative connection between the main-shaft and said needle-bar, a loop-taker cooperating with the needle in the production of stitches and mounted for operative movement in the bracket-arm, and means acting while the needle is in the work for partially drawing up the needle-thread to reduce the loop offered by the needle to the loop-taker preparatory to the advance of the latter to seize a thread-loop.
5. In .a sewing machine, the combination with the frame comprising .a base provided with needle-bar bearings and an overhang,- ing bracket-arm, and amain-shaft, of a reciprocating needle-bar journaled in said bearings and carrying a needle, an operative connection between the ma n-shaft and sald needle-bar, a loop-taker cooperating with the needle in the production of stitches and mounted for operative movement in the bracket-arm, and thread-drawing means provided with actuating and controllingmeans acting intermediate the arrival of the needle at an extreme position. and the adjacent loop-seizing position whereby it is caused to act upon the needle-thread twice while the needle is in the work and previous to seizure of a needle-thread loop by the loop-taker.
6. Inia sewing machine, the combination rvith the throat-plate, off a plurality of upwardly directed reciprocating needles adapted to carry loops of needle thread up: wardly through said throat-plate, a looptaker mounted above said throat-plate and adapted to' cooperate with said needles in the production of stitches, actuating means for said needles and loop-taken and threadby the loop-taker.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the frame comprising a base provided! with needle-bar bearings and overhanging bracket-arm, and a main-shaft, of a reciprocating needle-bar journaled in said bearings, a plurality of needles mounted in said needle-bar, an operative connection between the main-shaft and said needle-bar, a looptaker cooperating with said needles in the production of stitches and supported by the bracket-arm, actuating means for said looptaker connected with the main-shaft, and thread-drawing means provided with actuating and controlling means acting during the recession of the needles from extreme position and prior to seizure of thread-loops therefrom by the loop-taker whereby it is caused to act differently in reducing the size of the loops thrown out by said needles 7 for seizure by the loop-taker.
8. In a sewing machine, the combination with the main-shaft, of a reciprocating needle-bar carrying a needle, an-operative connection between the main-shaft and said needle-bar, a loop-taker cooperating with the needle in the production of stitches. a needle-thread tension device, and threaddrawing means including a pivotally mounted' thread-engaging element acting upon a portion of the needle-thread running freely from the tension device to the needle, said thread-drawing meansbeing provided with actuating and controlling means whereby it is caused to act upon the needle-thread twice while the needle is in the work and previous to seizure .of a needle-thread loop by the loop-taker. I
9. In a sewing machine, the combination with the throat -'plate, of a plurality of reciprocating needles adapted to carry loops of needle-thread through said throat-plate, a loop-taker adapted to cooperate with said needles in the production of stitches, actuating means for said needles and loop-taker, thread-drawing means comprising a plural ity of cooperating thread-engaging elements movable relatively to each other and in corinthe production of stitches,

actuating means for said looper-supporting rock-shaft, and meansindependent thereof for rocking said looper-carrier upon, its fulcrum-pin. 1
