Description

Dec. 10, 1929. WHEELER 1,739,110
PRINTER Filed Jan. 23, 1928 jzaroZcZZ Week?" 59% V M Patented 1t), 1929 QFATES PATENT @FFECE PRINTER Application filed January 23, 1928. Serial No. 248,645.
My invention relates to a printing device and has for purpose the provision of means for assembling and handling a plurality of separate type for making a simultaneous impression. One object or the invention is the provision of such a device adaptable for manual use. Another object is the provision of such a device applicable to relatively large individual type blocks employed in schools and the like. Other objects will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims.
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a plan view of my device;
Figure 2 is a side elevation;
Figure 3 is a section along the line 33 of F gure 1 2 Figure at is a section along the line H of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a detail cross section showinga modified form.
Like iarts are indicated by like members oughout the specification and drawings.
' will be understood that in the employment of type such as those herein shown, arev illngly of rubber or some equivalent substance, mounted on manual handle of wood, fiber or the like, much time is employed it the individual type have to be used singly manually. Furthermore it is ditlicult properly to align letters,v or to space between adjacent words and an irregular unsightly copy is the result.
in the use of my device a plurality of type are temporarily assembled as a unit, and at a single impression a number of characters or a numbe or" words may be impressed, in uniform sp a and alignment.
Referring to the drawings A A indicate strips or" wood or any other suitable material along the opposite faces of which is positioned. preferably, a yielding material A A indicate type in individual blocks, each type member being mounted upon a handle A the op osite sides or" which somewhat channeled or concave, as at A It will be understood that when such. type are arranged in line, the concavity or channel at each side thereof is of uniform contour from end to end of the line. A indicate holding clamps adapted to be positioned at the ends of the members A.
As an example 01: such variation I have i1- lustrated the form of Figure 5 wherein in the place of the solid strips of the other figures I employ a metal casing or shell B which surrounds the sponge rubber member 13, herein shown as filling the shell.
It will be realized that whereas I have described and shown a practical and operative device nevertheless many changes might be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my description and drawings to be taken in a broad sense illustrative and diagrammatic rather than as limiting me to my specific showing.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
The user selects the letters of the first word or words he wishes to print and arranges them in line, putting blanks or spacers between words. The alignment of letters or words may be made as long. it desired, as the entire line to be printed. TV hen the line is set up the user selects a holder, consistii of the two sticks A, rubber lined as at A with the two brass clips or clamp members for the ends. The sticks are placed on each side of the type handles, rubber side in and are forced together close enough to slip on the brass clipi. A The clips are then slid up the ends. They thus serve the double function of securing the holding; strips against the sides of the type and of themselves e (ring the ends of the type and thus prey cnting variation in spacing or separation of the type.
The stick or type so formed may be inked, by a press pad or roller and then is applied to the work to be printed.
A definite advantage of this device is that it permits the use. with type having handles upon which appear representations of the character made by the type of holding members, as herein described and shown. which do not cover such representations of the character impressed and therefore which permit the user to verify his type without first tak ing an impression.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a type holder adapted for use with a plurality of longitudinally aligned type, said holder iiicluding a pair of substantially rigid opposed arallel members adapted for engagement with the type therebetween, said rigid members being provided, on the type engaging faces, with yielding, type gripping elements, and clamping means for securing said members about said type.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a type holder adapted for use with a plurality of longitudinally aligned type, said holder including a pair of substantially rigid opposed parallel members adapted for engagement with the type therebetween, said rigid members being provided, on the type engaging faces, with yielding, type gripping elements, and clamping means for securing said members about said type, including holding elements adapted to maintain the rigid opposed parallel members sufiiciently close together substantially to compress and confine the yielding elements against the type.
3. As a new articleof manufacture, a type I holder adapted for use with a' plurality of longitudinally aligned type, said holder in.- cluding a pair of substantially ri id opposed parallel members adapted for engagement with the type therebetween, said rigid members being provided, on the type engaging faces, with yielding, type gripping elements, and clamping means for securing said members about said type, including clamping brackets adapted to surround the two parallel members.
Signed at Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 20th day of January,
HAROLD E. WHEELER.
