This invention relates to a water heater and particularly to a construction adapted for use in connection with a circulating hot Water heating system.
In such a system it is desirable to secure the full effect of the products of combustion in the fire box in order to increase the temperature of the water to a high degree which insures the most eflicient circulation and heating effect at the radiator. In the use of Water acketed fire boxes there is usually not sufiicient heating contact surface with the water to quickly raise the temperature there of and thereby start an active circulation in 1 the system, while much of the heat from the products of combustion is lost in its passage 1cgjirectly from the fire box to the discharge In. order to remove the objections noted and to provide an efiicient water heating construction I have combined with the water jacket of the fire box a tubular boiler to effect heating of the Water from said box by the passage of the heat products from the box through fire tubes in said boiler. I have also provided a special construction of fire box adapted to support at its upper portion one end of a laterally disposed tubular boiler which extends into the fire box to receive the products of combustion and is associated with a baffle plate to effect a return circulation through the upper tubes of the boiler.
The construction presented disposes the inner end of the tubular boilerin such position that it is directly heated by the fire and is so projected into the center of the fire box that the lower set of flues therein receive the products of combustion through their deflection by a baflie plate at the top of the box and these products at the opposite end of the boiler enter a set of return tubes discharging into a smoke box above said baffle plate.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of water heater including a Water jacketed fire box and a fire tube boiler communicating with the upper portion thereof, the body of said boiler being in communication with the jacket of the fire box.

present a new construction of fire box provided at its upper rear portion with a seat adapted to support one end of a tubular boiler in a position projected into said fire box, wlhich is closed at its upper end by the b aille p ate.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of Water jacketed fire box having at its upper portion a saddle and a baffle plate extended forwardly therefrom in connection with a fire tube boiler extended laterally from the fire box with a portion of its tubes lying below said baffle plate and the remainder thereof being disposed above the baffle plate to communicate with a discharge flue.
Other and further objects andadvantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.

The invention is shown in connection with a Water jacketed fire box of circular construction but both the configuration and size of this box and the boiler may be varied contingent upon the conditions of use.
The numeral 10 designates the fire box which is formed With the water jacket 11 having an intake pipe or return connection 12 at its lower portion from a circulating system and is also provided with the usual fuel door 13.
The lower portion of the box is equipped with any desired construction of shaking grate 14 having an operating lever 15 and supported above the ash pit 16. The upper portion of the fire box is formed at the rear with a seat or saddle 17, preferably of curved configuration, to fit the outer casing 18 of a tubular boiler which is supported in a lateral position thereon with the inner end of the boiler projected to substantially the center ,of the fire box.
The casing 18 is formedwith opposite heads 19 and comprises a heating water chamber which is connected with the jacket of the fire box by a pipe, as shown at 20, extending from one side of the box to the undersurface of the casing. The upper portion of the water jacket which is at the highest temperature is set of fire tubes 22 and an upper or return set v 23 of suchtube's, the latter being of less diameter and of greater number than the lower tubes 22. These tubes extend betweenthe Teasing heads 19 and this casing is extended beyond the outer head to form a gas chamber 24 to which access may be secured by a closure 25 adapted-tobe opened when it is desired to clean or repairthe tubes of the boiler. In order to complete the structure of this smoke box and direct the products of combustion into the lower tubes of the boiler, a bafile plate'31 is disposed at the upper portion of the firebox and extends forwardly from the seat thereon for a laterally disposed boiler. This plate is disposed in a horizontal plane to contact with the inner head 19 and divide the tubes of the boiler into sets, for securing opposite circulation of the heated gases,.while it also forms the base of the smoke box.
The operation of the invention willbe apparent from the foregoing-description and it rrrill be seen that the combination-of the fire tube boiler with the water jacketed fire box provides a largely increased heating surface so that the maximum effect is secured'from the heating gases'in their passageto the discharge flue. This boiler is so supported that the inner end-thereof'receives a direct heat from the fire box and the battle plate, forming the top of the fire box, is disposed'to divide the tubes of the boiler into circulating series. The construction, therefore, presents heating means by which thetemperature of the water may be very rapidly increased for any .desired'use and this is particularly effective instarting and maintaining a proper circulaon in a Water hee i y tem- It will be noted that the water jacket is provided with two points of communication with the water chamber surrounding the boiler tubes so that there may be a circulation from the lower port-ion of the water chamber surrounding the fire tubes through the water jacket and a discharge from said acket at its upper end into the top of the water chamber at the point of highest temperature.
a The invention presents a simple, eflicient and economically manufactured form of water heater adapted to utilize to the greatest extent the products of combustion and securing circulation between the boiler and the water jacket of the fire box.
While the specific details of construction have been shown and described, the invention from the spirit of the invention as recited in the following claim.
What I claim is:
In a water heating system, the combination of a vertical, cylindrical fire box having a water jacket formed therearound and a horizontal, cylindrical boiler having tubes held between opposite heads, a gas chamber at the rear end of said boiler and a smoke box formed on the forward upper portion of said boiler, a rearwardly inclined saddle in the upper rear portion of said fire box for supporting one end of the boiler and for allowing a portion of the forward lower half of the boiler to extend into the fire box, the smoke box being arranged to extend over the top forward portion of the fire box, a vertical standard for supporting the other end of the boiler, the bottom of the smoke box constituting a top closure for the fire box for dividing the boiler tubes into a circulating series, a return connection for the heating system located in the lower portion of the water jacket of the fire box, connections between the top of the water'jacketand the upper portion of the boiler and between the bottom of the boiler and the lower portion of the water jacket for effecting circulation between said water jacket and boiler, and an outlet at the top of said boiler for allowing heated water to be conducted through the heating system.
