WATCH GLASS COVER FOR BEAKERS Filed June 22. 1928 flNVENTOR; 1mg kw A) M BY guy A TTORNEYA'.
lilac. id, 1929 Ubll l hw STATES mater KONSTANTIN STUESSER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT WATCH-GLASS COVER FDR IBEAKEBS Application filed June 22,
My invention relates to improvements in watch-glass covers tor beakers for use in chemical laboratories in connection with boiling and evaporating operations or the like, the beaker-s being provided with a pouring lip, and the object of my improvement is to produce a watclrglass or crystal cover for a beaker that is provided with a set of ribs that project from the bottom convex face so to be adapted to serve as seats for the cover in engagement with the rim of the beaker so that a space is provided above the said rim ior pern'iitting of relatively free evaporation, and which ribs, however, terminate by their outer ends in spaced relation to the edge of the cover so as to leave the outer border portion, beyond the ribs unobstructed and tree tor use as a seat for close contact with said rim, such seating being permissible by locating one of the ribs in registration with the open space of the spout or pouring lip.
in the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a watchglass cover for beakers in position on a beaker and with the ribs involved in my invention serving as the seats for the cover.
i ure 2 is a plan view of the same, the locations oi. the ribs being indicated by the indentations on the upper face of the cover.
Figure 3 is a bottom-face view of the cover, the position of the beaker "for close-covering being indicated by means of broken lines.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the beaker lip and a rib in registration therewith.
My improved watch-glass cover 10 for beaker-s 11 comprises tor the general structure the usual form of bowed or curved crystal-like term that is applied to the rim portion 12 ot the beaker 11 with the convex face 13 on the under side and adapted to be seated by the border portion 14: on said rim portion 12.
in the present combination said bottom border rim portion 12 is utilized for the seating the cover for close covering, but in a special manner because of the provision of the ribs on the under side to be described.
Said ribs 15, as shown, are three in number, distributed around the face at one-hundred.
1928. Serial No. 287,603.
and twenty-degree intervals, and may be formed by suitably indenting the material 01' the cover, leaving grooves 16 on the upper concave face 17.
The said ribs 15 are of suiiicient thickness and are suitably positioned relatively to the beaker rim 12 that they will serve as seats for the cover 10 for positioning the same in spaced relation to the rim 12, leaving the space 18 for the relatively free escape of vapor during boiling of liquid in the beaker or the like. The ribs 15 thus dispense with the need of glass hooks that are now in common use.
The ribs 15 may be spaced and located so as to permit the cover to be positioned concentric with the axis of the beaker when in the ele vated or open location.
In the close covering position the cover is located slightly eccentric relatively to the beaker and the border face portion 1% beyond the ribs 15 is used for the seating.
Said bottom border portion 14: is free and unobstructed, the ribs 15 by their outer ends 19 terminating the proper distance inwardly from the extreme outer edge 20 of the cover.
My cover is specifically adapted for cooperation with a beaker 11 that has a pouring lip 21 that projects outwardly in the usual manner beyond the side wall 22 and that on the inside has the open space 23 through which the liquid is poured.
Said open space 23 serves as an interruption of the rim structure 12 and this is utilized for housing one of the ribs 15 in the close position of the cover.
Said trough-space 23 also permits of the slight shifting of the cover away from the concentric position for permitting of the seating generally of the cover 10 by the bottom border portion 14 on the portion of the rim 12 that comprises substantially all except the relatively small portion at or adjacent the rim 21.
As described, by a slight shitting of the cover either a close cover fit may be eiifected or a relatively open condition may be provided.
I claim as my invention A watch-glass cover for beakers comprising a structure having a contacting face for seating upon the rim portion ot a beaker and provided with a set of generally radially directed ribs for seating in spaced relation to said rim portion, said ribs terminating by their outer ends so that said contacting face is'unobstructed thereby, and the parts being constructed and arranged so that with a V beaker that. is provided with a pouring lip, by positioning one of: said ribs Within the pouring trough provided by said lip the cover may be shifted so as to change the seating of the cover from said ribs to said contacting face.
