UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BERNHARD O. OPITZ, OFPORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANK J. STERNE AND ONE-THIRD TO JOSEPH DUNNE. BOTH OF PORTLAND, OREGON DEVICE FOR MAKING SHOE-STRING POTATOES Application led December 15, 1927. Serial No. 240,160.
The primary object of my new and improved device consists in making a shredding device of one piece adapted for the shredding of potatoes, carrots, turnips and other vegetables for use in the making of shoe string potatoes, salads and soups.
The primary object of my device consists in a simple and efficient shredder adapted for use in the home where relatively small quanie tities of vegetables are to be shredded for domestic use.
A still further object of my device consists in making a shredder that is simple in con struction and easy to operate.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are setforth in the appended claim, and a preferred ge form of embodiment of which is hereinafter shown with reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specifica tion.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective front elevation of one of my assembled devices.
Fig. 2 is a sectional end view, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated.
Fig. 3 is a side sectional elevation, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated.
Fig. 4 is a side sectional view, taken on line 1-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views. i
I preferably form my device of a one piece body element 1, having downwardly extending side walls 2 and 8 disposed at either side of the body element and at relatively right angles to the body element and upturn the lower edge, as illustrated at 4; and 5 in Fig. l to form a smooth and uniform engaging surface at the lower edge thereof adapting the same to be held in the hand of the user or to be placed upon the kitchen sink or table or other support. I turn down the same at the end, as illustrated at 6 and 7 to afford rigidity to the device and preferably weld or solder the engaging edges of side walls and end walls to stitien the device. IVithin the horizontal portion of the body element 1, I form a series of upwardly extending corrugations 8 that are preferably uniform in size and spacing and opposite each upwardly extending cor rugation, I form a depression 9 thus forming an. opening 10 between the upwardly extend ing corrugations 8 and the depression 9 that are uniform in size and practically rectangular in cross sectional area. In forming the device of one piece of relatively thin material, the engaging corner 11 of the openings are not separated from each other, thus for1ning a cutting edge of the upwardly extending corrugations 8. The cutting edge of the cor rugations 8 may be sharpened or if made of relatively thin material and made by precision niamifacture, the saine may accomplish the result of cutting without the necessity of swaging the cutting edges or the sharpening of the same.
A device made as herein described, will shred potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables into fairly uniform slices that will facilitate the cooking of the same into uniform tenderness and facilitate the shedding of the same with the least amount of time and labor. I am aware that a simple construction may be accomplished by the forming of the ends of the device into two separate pieces and the welding or soldering of the meeting corners of the opening 10, thus creating a device similar to that illustrated herein but formed of more than one piece of material.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein shown and described, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claim which follows:
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a one piece body element having end and side walls and having a horizontal portion disposed therebetween and having a series of upwardly extending corrugatons in spaced relation, a series of de ressions oppositely disposed to the upward 'y extending corrugations to form an opening therebetween, the other end of said corrugations gradally diminishing into the body element.
BERNHARD O. OPITZ.
