Description

@CL-Q, 11934 K U 1,976,256
GRA'IER FOR POTATOES OR THE LIKE Filed Oct. 30. 1931 Patented ct. Q, i934 GRATER. FOR POTATOES OR m Karl' Passau, Ger
Application @ctcber 30. m1, Serial No. 572,194 in Ge November 10, 1930 The invention relates to graters and more particularly to graters intended of grating potatoes, beets, dry white bread, apples and other stuff used for food.
The grates known so far consisted of sheet iron strips inserted on edge in a frame and provided with teeth on either side or of a bent iron sheet perforated with holes the edges of which were jagged, so that the hands of the operator were easily injured.
The primary object of the invention is to provide for a grater which does not hurt the hands of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to. provide for a grater which is cheap in manufacture and readily cleaned.
To this end the novel grater is formed as a network of undulate wires of square section and interlaced with one another, so that their sharp edges ensure the grating efifect desired without being susceptible of injuring the hands of the operator. The novel grater being tinned results not only in its being more resistant to chemical actions but also in the network of wires being soldered together.
The invention will be more fully described in the following description and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of the whole implement one corner of which is shown in detail while the other network is shown more diagrammatically.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a corner.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line- 3-3 of Fig. '2.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the same section drawn to an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is the view of another embodiment comprising a grater with feet.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of 40 Fig. 4.
- Similar characters. of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the various views.
Referring to the drawings the frame a consisting of athick wire is made integral with the handle 22 bent off one side. The network covering the said frame comprises a series of parallel undulate wires 0 of square section and another 50 series of parallel wires d of identical. section crossing the series 0 at right angles the said wires d being interlaced with the wires 0 by alternately lying above and beneath the latter as in any ordinary plaited Work. In order that this plaited work is readily formed the wires are wavy in a plane rectangular to the-plane of the grater itself as already indicated. On account of this wavy shape of the wires and'of the sharp edges of the square section of the said wire the article to be grated contacts a very rough surface which is'however free from jagged spots suscep ible of injuringthe hands of the operator.
.In another embodiment of the grater the same is provided with fixed or collapsible feet e so that the grater may be used as a stable grill for toasting bread and the like. These feet may be arranged at the longitudinal or transverse edges of the frame of the grater and moreover they may be provided with stops 1 which prevent the feet from yielding to theopposite side so that the grate tilts.
I have described several embodiments of my invention, but changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention, as defined in the annexed claim.
I claim:
An improved grater for potatoes and the like, comprising, in combination, a quadrangular frame, a net-work of two interlaced sets of wires which cross one another so as to form open square meshes, the individual wires having square transverse section and their portions between crossing points being waved and crimped; a handle at one side of said frame, and supporting feet attached to the lower face of the same.
