Description

1 12J. HYNES; BABY-CARRIAGE.
No.173,793. Patented Feb. 22,1876.
N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
PATERICK J. HYNEVS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS. l
IMPROVEMENT IN BABV-CARRIAGES.
Specification' forming part of Letters Patent No. l73,"793,tdated February 22, 1876; application led June 25, 1875.
To all y whom it may concern. y
Be it known that LPATERICK J. HYNEs, of Springiield, Massachusetts, have invented certain vImprovements in the Construction of Baby-Carriages, of which'the following is a' specification My invention relatesv to the' combination, with ababy-c'arriage, of a rotary fau, to be operated by the movement of the wheels.
In the drawings Figure I is a plan view-.of a portion of a carriage having my improved fan, and Fig. II is a side view of the Same.
This fan is intended more particularly to be applied to that class of carriage that is propelled by being pushed from behind, so that the fan may perform the double purpose of fanning at the same time the child in the carriage and the person moving it, though it may `be applied `to a carriage drawn b va tongue.
to fan the child. 1 Combine it with the best' results, as shown in the drawings, where the bearings for the fan-shaft are attached to the Vhandle D, and where the position of the'fan itselfl will consequently be at an intermediate point between the child Within the carriage -and the operator without.
In Fig. I the carriage-body is removed from Athef running-gear, and the handle D by which the carriage is pushed is shown attached to the axle E, instead of to the carriage-body, to
which it is generally secured. From the carriage-handle D are secured the adjustable uprightsF F by means ofthe thumb-screws f f, which, passing through the elongated slots g g in the uprigbts, clamp them to the handle. The ends of these uprights form the bearings for the fan-shaft G extending between them, and each end of the shaft G I provide with the pulleys H H. VThe fan K may be formed of any material and in any convenient shape. From pulleys L L upon the hub of the Wheels, belts M M pass to the pulleys H H, and by varying the relative sizes of these pulleys H H L L the fan may be speeded to any de-` sired degree, while it will be seen that by means ot' the adjustable upright bearings F F the belts M M may not only he kept taut,`
but the `fau may be raised or lowered at will. NOW, having described my invention, what I claim is- Ina baby-carriage the combination of the pulleys L L and H H with their belts, the
shaftV G with its fan K, and the adjustable bearings F F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' PATERIGK J. HYNES.
