Beit known that 1WTLLIAM H. CRANE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ohilds Sleigh andvOarriage; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-,

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower side of said vehicle with the wheels in their normal position; and Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections of the same upon a line running from-front to rear, and show, respectively, the positions of parts seen in Figs. l and 2.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in eachof the figures.

In the use in cities of hand-sleighs for children it frequently happens that they must be pushed over places upon sidewalks or pavements which are bare of snow, whereby much discomfort is caused both to the occupant of such sleigh and to the person pushing the same.

To remedy such difficulties is the design of my invention, which consists, principally, in a childs sleigh that is provided with a pair of runners and a set of wheels, either of which, by the movement of a lever that extends upward and rearward between or near the handles, may be caused to furnish asupport for the body, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described. f

It consists, further, in the special construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In carrying my invention into practice I employ asleigh of ordinary form,which is composed of a body, A, two runners, B, and two rearward and upward projecting handles, C, that havev their outer ends connected by a cross-bar, D, allin the usual manner.

Secured upon the bottom of the body A, or upon a board, A', which is attached thereto, are four standards, E, which are arranged in pairs near the front and rear ends of said body, and are each provided with a vertical slot, e, that is adapted to receive and contain one end of able them to be raisedwholly above the plane of the runners B, for which purpose the axles F are permitted to move vertically by the slots e within the standards E. Such motion is secured by means of the following described mechanism, viz.:

Fittedwithin suitable guides, H, upon the bottom of the body A,or upon the board A', if such is used, are two bars, I, that are arranged in parallel lines near the inner faces of the standards E and are connected' together at their rear ends. To the rear end of said united bars is pivoted one end of a bar, E, that from thence extends rearward, and has its opposite end pivoted upon the lower end of a lever, L, which lever is pivoted ata point nearest its said lower end upon the rear end of the body A, the arrangement being such that by moving the upperend of said lever rearward said bars will be moved longitudinally forward, while by moving said lever in an opposite direction said bars will be moved longitudinally rearward.

Upon each axle F, near each of its ends, is secured a bar, M, which from thence extends upward to and is pivoted upon the contiguous bar I. Each bar M is pivoted to its bar I at such a point that when the latter is at the front limit ofitsmotion the former will occupy va vertical position, and the axles F will be atv the lower limit of their motion within the slots e, as seen in Figs. 2 and 5, and when said bars Iare drawn rearward said axle will be drawn upward to the limit of their motion in such direction.

When the vehicle is designed for use as a sleigh, the operating-lever is turned upward and forward against the rear end of the body, by which means the wheels are raised above the plane of the runners; but when a rolling support is required, by turning said operatinglever rearward and downward, said wheels are ICO moved downward until belowthe plane of said runners, in which position theparts arelocked by the vertical position of the bars that connect the axles fwth the longitudinallysliding bars. f

The board A, when used, may be made-de- Y 5 tachable, if desired, in which event its removal and the removal of the operating-lever will leave the sleigh in its normal condition.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l 1o 1. A childs sleigh that is provided with a pair of runners and a set of wheels, either of which, by the movement of a lever that extends upward and rearward between or near the handles, may be caused to furnish a supr 5 port for the body, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
