Patented Nov. 26, 1929 Unirse star PATgT FFIC` ADJUSTABLE HOLDINAG DEVICE Application led May 27, 1927, Serial No. 194,569. Renewed August 12, 1929.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in adjustable holding devices, and refers more particularly to holding devices for holding ythe outer ends of pivotally .connected mem- 5 bers at varying distances from fixed members, or for holding the outer ends of two ymembers pivotally connected to one another lvat Varying distances apart. It is an object of the invention to provide 1Q an adjustable holding device which can be quickly and easily set so as to maintain a pivotally mounted member vat varying distances from a Xed member on which it is mounted, either when the outer margins of 15 the said members are substantially in the same plane and adjacent to one another, or when the pivotal member is swung away vfrom the fixed member and has its outer marl gin inclined atanangle to the margin of the 2c fined member.
Another object of the invention is to pro-V vide an adjustable holding device which can be cheaply and easily made and applied.
Having thus outlined the major purposes 25 of the invention I will now proceed to describe an embodiment thereof with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the invention with the upper margin ofthe pivotal member inclined at an angle to the fixed member, and
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the invention, and
2.5 Figure 4 is a side view thereof.
Figures 5 and 6 are sections on the lines 5-5 and 6 6 of Figure 3. Figures '7 and 8 are details of the arm and slide.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window pivotally mounted at 2 in a window frame 3. On the latter an angle plate 4, having a substantially horizontal upper surface 5, is provided. The said upper surface Y has an opening 6 therethrough to receive the 45 downturned end 7 of an arm 8, the opposite end of which latter has an aperture 9 therethrough.
On the upper margin 10 of the window 1 a guide plate 11 is secured. This guide plate plate has a longitudinal raised bearing surface 12 through which an elongated slot 13 is cut. The outer margin of the bearing surface portion 12a adjacent to the window frame 3 is longitudinally substantially parallel with the underside of the guide plate, whereas thev 5 outer margin of the bearing surface portion 12b remote from the window frame 3 is upwardly inclined from the end A of the guide plate to its end B that is upwardly inclined towards the end of the bearing surface directly opposite the plate4. It will also be noted `that the bearing surface portions 12'pl and 12b are substantially parallel with one another transversely throughout their length, and are gradually at a lesser angle to the` underside of the guide plate from't-he end B ofthe latter until they are substantially parallel with the underside of the said guide plate at its end A. 1 l
A slide 14 is provided under the bearing surface which is wider than the slot 13, and has an upwardly projecting pin 15 thereon which passes through the said slot'. Moreover it will be noted that the pin is preferably providedwith aV flat side 15a thereon which bears against one side of the slot 13 so that. the slide is positively-held against rotation. The upper portion ofthe pin is threaded, passes through the aperture9 in the arm 8, and has a nut 16 in threaded engagement with :13 it, so that by tightening the nut the arm is clamped between it and the bearing surface 12.
'It is of course obvious that the angle of ineline of the outer bearing surface portion 129.535 longitudinally must be made to suit the length of the window 1 from its pivotal point 2 to its upper margin 10, since one object ofthe invention is to provide a guide plate having Y a bearing surface so formed as to compensateeo for the varying angularity between the upper surface 5 ofthe plate 4 and the margin 10 of the window 1 as the latter moves pivotally, since the outer end ofthe arm 8 is always at the same location along the bear-3195 ing surface when the pivotally mounted window is swung outwards a given distance, and is inclined at a given angle.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been describedi-'loo and shown, it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such modifications as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a guide having a longitudinal raised bearing surface, ksaid bearing surface having an elongated rslot therethrough, the bearing surface on one side of said slot having its outer margin substantiaiiy `parallel with the underside of the guide and the .bea-ring surface on the other side of the slot having its outer margin' upwardly inclined from one end, and an arm having one end adapted to vbe Lpivotally mounted and its opposite end extendingzover said slot, in combination with means extending through said slot for holding said opposite endof said arm against said hearing surface `at any location therealong. l
.21A device of the character described coinyprising a guide Ahaving la longitudinal `bearing surface saidv bearing surface having :an
elongated zslot therethrough, the Vbearing surface y@none side `of `said slot having its outer margin-substantially parallel with the guide, :and Vthe bearing surface on the other side ofthe slot having'its outer margin'upivardly inclined from one end, :said bearing surface portions being substantially parallel With one another transversely throughout. their length, andan armhaving one end adapted to be pivotally mounted and its opposite end `extending over said slot, in .combination with a: slide movable under said bearing surface, and means for pivotally connecting said arm with said-slide.
c' V3. A device ofthe characterv described comprising a guide having alongitudinal -bearing' surfaee,.said bearing surface having an elongated slot therethrough7 the bearing surface on one side of said slot having its outer margin substantially parallel with theguide, and the bearing surface on 'the other side ofsaid slothavingits outermargin upwardly inclined from one end, said bearing surface portions being substantially parallel with one another transversely throughout their length,
and .an arm having one .end adapt/ed ,to be .'.pivotally mounted and its opposite .end eX- Y tending 'overnsaid slot, in combination with g means Ifor holding ksaid opposite end `of said -through said slot.
arm against saidbearingsurface at any location `therealong, sald means extending 4. VIna closure f-astenerfaniV arm adapted to Vbe pivotally secured at one end to the 'frame of a closure, a guide device adapted to :be
- carriedby a closure andhaving a slot Athere- .inand a'relatively Wide bearing surface on leither side' of the slot and upon Which the rod is adapted to ride, a fastening-device on therod engaging inthe slot to hold a closure in a predetermined position withrespect to the closure to its frame.
