JOHN KEYS, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN PORTABLE FOOT-RESTS FOR HOT-AIR REGlSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [73,649, dated February 15, 1876; application filed December 9, 1875.
V To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN KEYS, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Foot- Rests for Hot-Air Registers; and 1 do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved footrest, designed to be readily attached to, or
' removed from, the open scroll-work forming the front of ordinary hot-air registers, arranged in the walls or other portion of a house, for the purpose of drying and warming the feet in cold and wet weather; and it consists of a portable shelf and bracket, hinged together, and provided with hooks in the rear of the same for attachment to the open scroll-work of the register, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the position of the hooks in therear of the same. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is aview of one of the hooks.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the shelfor foot-rest, which is hinged or pivoted to aback piece, B. 0 represents a metallic bracket, attached to the hack .piece B, by a set-screw or other suitable means. This bracket is adapted to'act in connection with a slot in the under part of the shelf A, to hold said shelf in a position to allow of the feet being rested thereon when the invention is being used; but when it is ,desired to fold the same up in a smaller space, the bracket can be turned down on the back piece B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In the rear of the shelf A is attached a metallic plate, D, which is provided with slots at near each end, as shown in Fig. 1. or E represents metallic hooks, the inner ends of which are provided with rounded heads, ad-
justed within the slots 01, the object of which is, that the shelf A may be readily and quickly attached to the different styles of open scrollwork in the face of ordinary hot-air registers. The hooks E, playing loosely in the slots a, can be moved forward or back, to fit within that part of the face of the register which may be open at that point, to which the hook is directed, and the end of the hook, catching behind the scroll-work of the register, holds the shelf A in a horizontal position, or nearly s'o, as a rest for'the feet.
The advantages of my invention will be readily seen, inasmuch as it combines in its construction and operation simplicity economy with a ready adaptation to the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, auddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A footrest consisting of the shelf A, having the metallic plate D and hooks E arranged in the rear, hack piece B, and bracket G, the several parts being constructed, arranged, and combined to operate in connection with a hot-air register, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the shelf A, provided with the metallic plate D, having slots on, in which are adjusted the hooks E, with a hot-air register, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention 1 aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOHN KEYS. Witnesses:
JOHN BELLAM, J. J. MdGUmE.
