Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES MARK ROBINSON, OF WATER-LOO, NEAR LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND STEAM GENERATOR Application filed November 5, 1926. Serial No. 146,412.
This invention relates to improvements in steam-generators, and more particularly generators of the marine boiler type. The object of the invention is to provide a steamgenerator of a compound character which is adapted to suit varying steam supply requirements.
According to my invention, the lnternal space of a steam-generator enclosed by the boiler-shell is divided into two separate portions, so as to form, in effect, two independent generator units, which are capable of being worked independently of each other, or both together. To this end, the water and steam space enclosed by the boiler-shell of the main boiler is divided by longitudinal part1t1ons and an end or cross partition into two separate and independent generator units. One
of these generator units occupies the middle 2 portion of the space enclosed by the bo ler shell and the other generator unit comprises the rest of the water and steam space, that is to say, the two wing portions on the sides of the central generator, and the spacebehind it. i
The plating forming the shell of the central generator unit extends from top to bottom of the main boiler shell and is riveted thereto, and this central generator is stayed by stay-bolts to the wing-furnaces, and also in its lower part to the main boiler shell, and further its sides are stayed together by rows of cross stays. In its upper part it is further stayed by the longitudinally extending staybolts connecting the two end-plates of the main boiler-shell.
The central generator is heated by the middle furnace and. one of the" clusters of smoke-tubes in the case of a three furnace 4o boiler, or by the two middle furnaces in the case of a boiler with four furnaces.
The central generator is providedlwith means for supplying it with feed-water to maintain an operative level therein for the independent generation of steam, and also with means for delivering the high pressure steam enerated in it.
It Wlll thus be seen that I provide a compound steam-generator divided into two in-v dependent generator units which are capable 5 of being worked independently of each other, or in unison. Thus, forexample, if only a limited supply of steam is required, the central generator only may be used, the wing furnaces of the other'generator unit being damped down or out of action; while if a supply of steam is required that necessitates the use of the generators to their full capacity, the two'boiler units can be in action simultaneously. p
The invention will be further described with referenceto the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a front elevation (with one half in section) of a multitubular, three furna'ce marine-boiler, showing my invention applied thereto. 7
Figure 2 a longitudinal section of same. Figure 3 is a half sectional front elevation of invention applied to a marine-boiler with four furnaces.
Referring to these figures, it will be seen that the central portion of the space enclosed by the ordinary boiler-shell 1' is divided off by the two longitudinal partitions 2 and the cross partition 3 to form a separate generator located centrally within the main boiler, which is thus divided into two-independent generators, namely a central one 4, and an outer one 5 comprising the rest of the water and steam space within the main shell-1, and consisting mainly of two wing portions situated on the sides of the central generator.
The partition plates 2, whichform the sides of the central generator, extend from top. to bottom of the shell 1 and are riveted thereto. They are stayed together by lines of crossstay-bolts 6 pitched at suitable distances apart, Withnuts 7 and 8 screwed on the bolts on opposite sides of the plates, and
with riveted washers 9 on the outer sides of the plates. In their lower part the partition plates 2 are suitably curved where they pass between the respective furnace tubes 10, 11, and 12 and are stayed to the wing furnace tubes 11 and 12 by staybolts 13 which screw into tapped holes in the plates and have nuts screwed therein at both sides, and are provided with riveted washers 14 at those places where the bolts pass through the plates in an angular direction. Still lower down, the plates 2 are stayed to theplower. Part of the boiler shell 1 by line of expansionis'tays, each stay consisting of eyebolts 15, the threaded shanks of which are passed respectively through tapped holes'in the shell 1 and the partition plates 2 and secured nuts and washers, the eyebolts being coupled together by a link 16. I t
The back end of the generator 4 is formed by the flanged gend-gplate 3, which is riveted to the side plates 2 of the "generator 4 and also at top and bottom to the boiler shell 1. It, is also riveted to the rear flanged ends 17, 18, of the furnace'tube 10, and to a frame 19. This frame 19 is angular in cross section and shaped to'conformto the configuration of r the front of the shell of the combustion cham ber 20, to which it isriveted. The end-plate 3 also forms aback tube-plate for a nest of smoke tubes 21, which pass from the combustionchamber 20 through the-central generator 4 to a, front tube-plate 22 and smokeboX (not shown) on the boiler front. The front end of the central generator 4 is closed by the boiler front end plate 23. a
24L are the longitudinal stay-bolts of the main boiler shell, six of which areshown as passing'through the central generator unit 4 and through its end-plate '8, these bolts being nutted on each side of the end platefiand provided externally with riveted washers 25.
11 and 12 are the wingifurnacesfor heating the generator unit formed by therest of the space within the mainshell 1, and 26 and 27 are nests of smoke-tubes traversing the water space on each side of the central generator 4. 1 i
28 and 29 are manholedoors for giving access to the central generator 14.
Any suitable means maybe provided for independently supplying the'two generator units iand 5; with:feed water, and each of these generators is also fitted with other-nec essary fittings or mountingstoenable it to be independently workable, such as stop-valves for drawing off (steam, safety-valves, water and steam-pressure gauges, and so forth. -30;
is a connection to a stop-valve for-supplying high pressure steam from the central generator 4, and 31 the connection to the safetyvalves of said generator. 32 and -33 are the connectionsto the corresponding valves of the other generator '5.
I declare that what I claim 1. T
3. A steam generator as in claim .1, in whi ch furnace openings-are provided the front wall of the drumyand tlue openings are provided at the transverseipar tition, and furnace fines are located in the, units "and about said openings to 'sealth'e same,t-he vertical part-itions passing; between furnace fines of the centraljandthexU-slhaped unit, thefflue for thegeneraftorunitextending to the said transverse partition'and sealing the said flue opening therein and "stay bolts connecting said vertical-partitions with said furnace fines of the U shaped unit.
4. In a isteam jgener-ator, a common boiler shell, two longitudinal partitions reaching. from top to bottom -'of said boiler shell and secured thereto, andextending-from the front plate of the common shell and terminating at a distance from the rear wall thereof, atransverseipartition having its'edges connected to the saidboil'er shell and forming back end plate connecting said longitudinal partitions to form central and wing units, said central unit .laeing independently "workable, "walls forming in conjunction .with said transverse partition a comloustio'nchamber adjacent the rear wall of the common shell, and furnaces for said units connected between said transverse partition and said front plate, the front plate of said common shell being provided with firing openings for said furnaces, said furnaces communicating with said "combustion chamber throughopenings in said transverse. partition. p
5. A steam generator as inclaim 4, in which the said longitudinal partitions forming side walls of the central generator unit are stayed together by cross stays in-their upper part,
while in their lower part the said sidewalls are stayed to the wing furnaces and also to the lower part of the main boiler shell.
