This invention relates to an installation of marine boilers that operate in boiler rooms that are maintained at super-atmospheric pressure to produce Vforced draft,v and will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is an end view in section and somewhat diagrammatic, showing an illustra-l tive embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a section along the line2-2 of Fig. l.
In the drawings, reference character l indicates the hull of a ship and the sea level is indicated at 2. The ship is provided with an air-tight boiler room 3 that is maintained at super-atmospheric pressure by means of the air pressure' fan 4, so that forced draft is thereby maintained through the boiler furnaces.
It has been found that in-some present installations of this character in which closed forced draft fire-rooms are used, gas sometimes escapes from the uptake or smoke-stack leading away from the boilers or fire-room into theliving quarters of the ship. This seeping or leaking of the gas is caused by the fact that the gas leaving the boilers through the uptakes and stacks is somewhat above atmospheric pressure and, therefore, leakage takes place unless the uptakes and stacks are absolutely tight. It is expensive to make the uptakes absolutely tight, and the present invention obviates the objectionabove referred to in a very simple and inexpensive manner. The invention is illustrated with a ship with two boilers located side byside in the fireroom, but the invention is also applicable Vto any other number of boilers. The boilers as illustrated each have anupper or steam and water drum 5 and lower drums 6 connected by banks of tubes inthe well-known manner in boilers of this type. The furnaces of the boilers are indicated at 7 and uptakes 8 for waste products of combustion lead from the upper portions ofthe boiler to a stack or iiue 9 that leads to an outlet 10 on the side of the shi 'lPhe stack or flue 9 is surrounded by an outer casing l1 that isair-tight and is spaced from the stack or flue so as to leave a space, as indicated at 12. The air pressure in the boiler room'3 causes air topas's through ,the openings 14 into the space l2' around the flue 9, 'thus preventing any gas from escapf ing through cracks or leaks that may bein theflue. In. view'of thefact that the end of the space 12 is closed, as; indicated at '13, this does notcause waste of air, except the small amount ofair that may pass directlytinto the flue'9 from the space l2 to preventleakage 7 of gas in the other direction. Either the Vflue 9.orfthe casing l1 may beinsulated with lheating insulating material, if desired.
