' My invention relates to improvements in presses for bending into jaw forming rela tion'the flanges of tie-plate sections of the type comprising a platform member havlng a perpendicular flange thereon;
A certain tie-plate known as the Barrett tie-plate and rail anchor and disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,171,581, Feb. 15, 1916, to Barrett comprises a plate or platform having a jaw thereon for engaging the upper surface of the base of a rail resting on the platform, said platform being apertured to receive spikes for anchoring the tie-plate and forforcing a'rail into wedging engagement with said jaw. Inone method of formlng the Barrett type of'tie-plate, apertured sec tions are struck transversely from along blank comprising a body plate formed with a perpendicular flange thereon and extending longitudinally of the same. The flangemember of such tie-plate secti on is then bent to turn the outer portion of the flange member into near parallelism with the body plate portion or platform, whereby said flange member is resolvedinto a jaw for gripping a rail base in a wedging manner.
An object of the present-invention is to provide a simple and durable press mechanism for quickly, easily and accurately bending such flanges of such tie-plate sections following the heating of said flanges.
lVith the foregoing and other objects'in view, which will appear in the followingdescript-ion, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-- scribed and claimed. I

The grip of a bent flange 23 upon the spacing 'die'18 being at times too strong to permit of Y the 'convenient removal of the formed tie-plate through the medium of .a pair of tongs, it is desirable to forcibly breakthe grip between the flange and die and this I accomplish'by means now to be described; A bolt 25 reaching through the arms 14* of the anvil frame 14 provides'a pivot for the head of'a lever26 upon which an ejector lug 27 is formed. 'Said lever26 reaching downward from the pivot 25', then horizontally therefrom, is stopped at' its lowermost lifting limit by engagement with theblock 13.
At such limit of movement of said lever 26,
the ejector lug-27 rests slightly beneath the lower} edge of the body plate 22 of a tie-plate section B hanging by its flange 23 ontheydie 18-"(Fig. 1). The free endof the lever '26 slidablyengages the edge of a bar 28 hinged to and depending from the ram 12, such engagement being yieldingly maintained by means ofa spring 29 stretched between said bar 28 and frame 10 and operating to tilt said bar toward said lever. A catch 29 on the-bar 29fratchet-s over ashoulder 26 on the lever 26 during the downward stroke of the on the "upward stroke of said ram.

bend said flange over said die, an ejector for lifting a formed tie-plate from said die, means for swinging the die and means for operating the ejector, both of said means being actuate perpendicular flange thereon, said press ineluding a frame, an anvil supported thereon, a ram reciprocable vertically above the anvil, the face of said anvil being inclined from the vertical, a jaw spacing die, a hinged mounting for the die, means for swinging the mounting, said die providing a hanger for the flange of a tie-plate section placed with the body plate thereof between said anvil and die, said mounting swinging means being adapted to clamp the die against the body plate of the section so placed, and a bending punch on the ram, the same complementing the spacer die and adapted, upon the descent of said ram, to bend said flange over said die, and an ejector adapted to engage beneath the formed tieplate section and to lift the same from said die.

A press for bending into jaw forming relation the flanges of tie-plate sections of the type comprising a body plate having a perpendicular flange thereon, said press includ ing a frame, an anvil supported thereon, a ram reciprocable vertically above the anvil, the face of said anvil being inclined from the vertical, a j aw spacing die, a hinged mounting for the die, means for swinging the mounting, said die providing a hanger for the flange of a tie-plate section placed with the body plate thereof between said anvil and die, said mounting swinging means being adapted to clamp the die against the body plate of the section so placed, and a bending punch on the ram, the same complementing the spacer die and adapted, upon the descent of said ram, to bend said flange over said die.

A press for bending into jaw forming relation the flanges of tie-plate sections of the type comprising a body plate having a perpendicular flange thereon, said press including a frame, a reciprocable ram, movably related anvil and die members, the face of the former being inclined from the direction of movement of the ram, the die member providing an abutment for the flange of a tie-plate section placed with the body plate thereof in-.
terposed between said members, means for shifting one of said members with respect to the other to bring together the die member and the body plate of the section placed between said members, and a bending punch on the ram complementing the die member and adaptech'upon the working thrust of the ram, to bend said flange over said die.

A press for bending into jaw forming relation the flanges of tie-plate sections of the type comprising a body plate having a perpendicular flange issuing outwardly from the intermediate portionsthereof, said press including a frame, a reciprocable ram, an anvil having the face thereof inclined throughout its extent from the direction of movement of said ram and supporting a tie-plate section for movement along said inclined face, a jaw spacing die spaced from the face of the anvil and having movement at substantially right angles to the inclined face of said anvil, and providing an abutment for arresting the i movement of the flange of the tie-platesection placed upon said anvil along the inclined face thereof prior to the engagement of said jaw spacing die with the body of said tie-plate section and for bringing said tie-plate sectioninto final position relative to said anvil,'and to so hold the tie-plate section, means for shifting the die against the body of the tieplate section so placed, and a bending punch in the ram complementing the spacing die for tie-plate section for movement along the face I thereof, a jaw member movable at substan{ tially right angles to the face of said anvil and supported on said frame for clamping the punch on said ram cooperatlng wlth said die body portion of the tie-plate section in final position upon the face of said anvil, one of said members having a spacing die thereon forming an abutmentadapted to engage the flange of the tie-plate to arrest the movement thereof along the face of said anvih and to 'bring'the tie-p1ate section in final position for bending prior to the engagement of the jaw member With'the body thereof, and to so hold the tie-plate section, and a bending for bending the flange 01" the tie-plate over Bald spacing Che.
