FAIL-CLOSING Driv-w11.
A further object is to provide a device of the character mentioned which is light inv weight, strong and durable and which ref quires the application of relatively slight force in the operation thereof. In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had tothe accompanylng drawings, in whichy Figure 1 is va tolp` plan view of the invention with one of t e operating levers shown Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the invention mounted upon a pail cover, the sectioi being taken on line. 2-2 of Fig. 1; an
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a circular base plate of a size and form adapted to seat upon a pail cover 2 at and adjalcent to the upwardly pressed rim 3 of the latter. As herein shown for illustrative purposes, said base plate is of spider form and comprises anv outer seating ring 1 carried by arms 1b whichextend radially -rom a.
mally'maintained in an upwardly swung position relative to the base plate, whereby the superposed parts of the structure are normally held in elevatedposition, as shown in F ig. 2 and as is shown in full lines in Fig. 3.
The resilient means herein 'disclosed comprises a spiral compression spring 10 which encircles a bolt 11 having` a T-head 12 received in a recess provided therefor in the under side of the ring la. Said bolt projects upward through a hole 13 provided therefor in said ring and through a tubular member 14 which has its lower yend screwed into i a threaded hole in the adjacent pivoted arm 9. A nut 15 adjustably mounted on the upper-end of said bolt 11 normally occupies 'seated relation to the adjacent end' of the tubular member 14; and the spring 10 rests at one end upon the ring 1a and at its opposite end against said nut 15, or against a thimble 16 which underlies said nut and l[which is shiftable within said tubular mem- Formed on, or attached to, the vertically shiftable hub- 5 are two oppositely extending u arms17 to the vouter ends of which are pivotally attached the lower ends of two links 18 which vhave their upper ends pivoted to operating levers 19 which normally occupy substantially upright positions, having their lower ends pivotally mountedupon opposite ends of a crosshead 2O which is rigidly mounted upon the upper endy portion of the standard 4. Each of the levers 19 is formed of two members 19B which, 4adjacent to their upper ends, are inclined divergently and thence upwardly and'which have their upper ends connected by a horizontally disposed pintle 21 having rotatable thereon a wooden handle 22 by means of which the apparatus may be grasped by hand, as for operating the apparatus and also for carryinv from place to place. l
pract1ce,when it 1s desired to clinch a pail cover 2l in place upon a pail 23, such cover is rst disposed in seated position up`- .the invention is then applied in seated relation to the cove:` with the clinchng jaws positioned in facmgrlation to said lugs 3*.
Then, grasping the two handles, the operator swings the levers 19 outward and downward on their pivotal mountings, thereby, through the links 18, actuating the hub 5 to move downwardly along or over the standard 4. This action, through the intermediacy of the bars 6, effects depression of the levers 7 against the yielding elevating force exerted upon the pivoted arms 9 by the compression springs 10, and simultaneously with such lowering movement the levers 6 are swung upon their pivotal mountings for gradually bending the lugs 3 into underlying clinched relation to the rim-roll 24.
It is to be noted that the simultaneous inswinging and lowering movements of the jaws 8, effected as above described, results in a gradual and close tucking of the lugs 3a with respect to the rim-roll.
The springs 10, ire-expanding following compression thereof, serve to elevate all of the various shitable parts to their normal positions.
Due to the arrangement of the various levers and links whereby the clinching jaws are actuated. relatively slight force is required to effect the bending of the coverattaching lugs into pail-closing position.
What is claimed is- 1. Apparatus for attaching covers on pails, comprising a base plate having a portion for seating upon the rim'ot` the cover, pivoted arms carried by said plate, jaws pivoted upon said arms, link and lever mechanism for actuating said jaws into bending relation to the cover lugs, and means normally holding said arms, mechanism and jaws in positions wherein the last named of said elements are in non-engagingv relation to said lugs.
2. Apparatus for attaching covers on pails, comprising a .base plate having a portion for seating upon the rim of the cover, pivoted arms carried by said plate, jaws pivoted upon said arms, link and lever mechanism for actuating said jaws into bending relation to the cover lugs, and means interposed between the arms and the base plate normally holding said arms, said link and lever mechanism and said jaws in positions wherein the last named of said elements are in non-engaging relation to said lugs.
3. Apparatus for attaching covers on pails, comprising a base plate having a portion for seating upon the rim of the cover, a standard carriedby said plate, a member slidable on said standard, pivoted supports carried by said plate, jaws pivoted on said supports,- connections between said slidable member and said jaws, means normally maintaining said parts in a position wherein the jaws are in non-engaging relation to the cover lugs, and lever mechanism whereby said slidable member is thrust downward for actuating said jaws to bend said lugs inwardly.
4. ln apparatus for attaching covers on pails, the combination with lug bending jaws and normally elevated mechanism for actuating said jaws, said mechanism including a member which is vertically shiftable on said standard, of means for depressing said mechanism to ez'ect jaw actuation, saidl means comprising oppositely swinging levers pivoted on said standard, and connections etween said levers and said shiftable mem- 5. In apparatus for attaching covers on pails, the combination with lug bending jaws, mechanism for actuating said jaws, and resilient means. normally maintaining said mechanism in a position wherein the jaws are withdrawn with respect to the cover lugs, said mechanism including a vertically movable member, of a pair of pivoted levers operatively connected to said member whereby the latter may be depressed.
In testimony whereof, li ai'x my signature.
j CHARLES H, ROLLASON.
