This invention relates to improvements in doubly pivoted inserted concealed hinges for doors, lids, gates and the like, so as to enable the door and the like to be moved from vthe closed position 180o to the full open position or to any intermediate position.
The object of the invention is to provide hinges that are half inserted in the door and half inserted in the jamb or stationary7 member and arranged so that when the door is closed in alignment with the jamb the hinges are invisible and do not Vproject outward beyond the door or jamb, To that end said hinges are made U-shaped and their ends are Eivoted in corresponding metal sockets imedded in adjacent surfaces of 'the jamb and door between the exposed outer facesy of the jamb and door, and so that the walls of the sockets will positively stop and brace the various ,movements of the hinges as hereinafter will more fully appear. Y
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a Vhorizontal seotion through the hinge construction, and parts of a door and jamb, showing them in their Vposition when the door is closed. Fig. 2 is a similar figure showing them in one position when the door is half open. Fig. 3 is a similar gure showing them in another position when the door is half open. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing their position when the door is entirely open 180. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the same when the door is fully open, viewed from the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
To illustrate this invention it is shown and associated with a door jamb 10 and a door 11, although the hinge may be associated with the lid of a box and the back wall oi theboX, or with a gate and a gate post. Two similar . rectangular'metal sockets 12 and 13 are inset in the adjacent portions of the jamb and door, considering the same when the door is closed or in alignment with-the jamb, as seen in Fig. l. The sockets are casings or boxes opening outward and havinga iiange 14 at the sides through which screws 15 are inserted for securing them in their recesses. The Vsock- 59 ets- Yare inserted between the outer and inner Welle/ef the Sleen-fend iemblse ,that when the deer ,is eleeelf .eeeppeere in Fs- L'the. breekf ets nillnetaiepeer or be vieble. Y t L. link member VabutsV against the outer wall of y theijamb member while the position of the y parts in the door remain the same as in Fig. l. Therefore, each link 16 in every position engages the socket walls at four places, as the i rounded endsengage them at two points, and
twov side edges engage them. Thus, it is 'seen that the door is limited in its various movements'v `the link member and sockets and Y,does not depend on its en- @Q0 24 y Y i y 1,735,696
gagement With anyother structure or with the jamb as the door never touchesthe jamb or Wall with which the jamb is associated. VThe links 16 are relatively high, as shown in 5 Fig. 5, and their upper and lower surfaces or Walls rather snugly engage the upper and lower Walls of .thesockets l2V and 118.* This;4 feature, in addition to the stop constructionV above outlined, renders the hinge construc- 10 tion very strong and durable asVvvel1 a ,s 'inf Visible When the door is closed. Any number of hinge constructions Vcan be applied totV a door, vbut usually tWo or three suliice.
