This invention is for a table of a type having extensible leaves and relates particularly to a construction especially adaptable for a smoking sta-nd, card table, serving table-or 5 the like, and in a less finished form it mightl well be used as a kitchen or laundry table.
It is proposed that inthe preferred embodiment of the invention, there be two sets of extensible leavesyone set which, when retracted, overlies the table top and forms a false top therefor, the other set 4being of the usual drop-leaf type. v f f The invention has for its principal objects to provide an extension table of unique con- 15; struction, especially adaptable and conven- A in that type of table shown and described in a prior patent of myself and Jerome Adler,
' No. 1,618,523 of Feb. 22, i927.
The nature and construction of the table, as well as its objects and advantages, may be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: v
Fig. 1 is a top plan view o f the table fully extended; r
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the table with some of the extension leaves retracted and `others extended, in dotted lines; y
Fig. 3 is a partial plan view, showing the side leaves retracted and the corner leaves extended; i
Fig. l is a vertical sectional view on the line lV-IV of Fig. 1, but showing one of the side leaves retracted; j
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line V-#V of Fig. l, showing the mounting and supporting mechanism for one of the corner leaves;
Fig. 6 is a detail View, showing one of the supporting brackets for the side leaves.
In the drawings, 5l designates the table legs framing the supporting frame structure of a mans Suitable kind on which is s exea top 6, which ispreferably square or rectangular. :Each nppercorner Vportion `of the mainvtop 6 is preferably cut` out or beveled, as -indicated at I 7,' providing for Loverlapping continuation when the side leaves are erected.
Normally covering and overlying the top 6 of the table are a plurality of extension I corner leavesfS of similar shape and preferably of the' same thickness as the top 6. kThese corner leaves are substantially square, and of an area of about one-fourth that of the vcomplete area of the permanent top, over ywhich they are adapted to fold and lie when thrown upwardly and inwardly thereon, as inFig. 2.
For such purpose the inner corner portion of each leaf 8 and each outer corner portion of permanentftop 6 are beveled, as shown,
whereby to provide for attachmentand. interfitting connection bymeans of the intervening hinges 2.1 Such hinges, which may be of any'preferred form, are preferably of the concealed type, asbutt hinges, sothat, when erected, they will permit of av comparatively close joint, while also allowing for folding over and compact lplacement on thev main top 6,0f the severalcorner sections,- as in- Fig. 2. v
1 The Yhinges are of suflicient length and strength to provide ample supporting connection s'o that the corner sections may be swung in reverse directions without noticeable variation'in their placement during long continued service. i
Secured along one or more, preferably all,
of the sides of the table are side andend extension Vleaves 11 of any usual or preferred construction. These leaves are of the hinged drop-leaf type, connected with'the main table top by hinges 12 lof suitable construction.-.
Extension brackets, such as pivoted blocks 13 under the table top, mounted below and above in the framing andmain table respectively by terminal pivots 3, are so arranged that when they are extendedthey lie with their upper edges flush with the under side of the main table top 6. They are Vof such length and width that they also match up evenly andflush underneath with the lower.
surfaces et the corner sectiene Swhen such sections are extended, as clearly shown .in
The brackets are so mounted, as indicated, that they will extend across underneath a por- Vtion of one side section and of one corner section more or less as in Fig. l. The inner ledges o f corner sections 8 are beveled or countersunk, so that they will lie over and be supported upon the reversely beveled or shaped endmost edges of the side shelves ll.
By such arrangement therrcorner sections, when laid outwardly, rest upon the endmost edges of the side sections, when erected, thereby providing ample support in addition to ytheir support of the bracketsl. In fact such brackets may be used for the support of the sections ll only by erecting them at right angles to the sides ofthe main table, while the corner'sections may then rest with suflicient 'support upon the ends of the sections l1.
either theside sections or side andcorner sections, leaving the others either depending vertically or laid'overon the main top as de- Sired, and with reference to the space available and .the desired table area. v
Theinvention however, is in no` way restrict to any particular size or particular shape of the several sections exceptthat they must be so designed and of suitable size to co-.operate and interit with each other and Withthe:
main table, as will be readily understood.
The table as thus constructed is adaptable ner table top having a supporting framework,
a plurality of s-ide shelf members hinged.
thereto, a plurality of vertically swinging corner members having beveled corners and hinge connection with the corners of the main table, and means for' supporting said sections when erected.
5. In combination, a main rectangular top provided With a Supporting underframe and beveled at tliecorners, foldinv corner sections correspondingly beveled andy having hinge connection with the beveled corners of the main top adapted to lie over thereon, and means for supporting said .sections when erected.
6. In combination, a main rectangular top provided with a supporting underframe and beveled at the corners, folding corner sections correspondingly beveled and having hinge connection wlith the beveled corners of the main top adapted to lie over thereon, side sections having hinge connection with the side of the main table top, and Vpivoted bracket members adapted to be thrown out underneath in supporting relation to saidv sections.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX-my signature.y HIRAM H'. FELDMAN.
to various uses and provides la useful, serviceable and eflicient article of furniture.
Having described my invention, what I claim is y 1 A rectangular table having a fixed top beveled at the corners, a supporting structure for the top, avplurality of vertically swinging corner section portions hinged directly tothe beveled cern/ers of the top, and means for sup-v porting such sections.
2. A rectangular table having a top beveled at the corners, a supporting structure for the top, a plurality of side shelf members hinged to the top, and yintervening vertically swingingV corner sections having hinge connection with the beveled corners of the tcp. f
3. A table having a bevel corner top, a supporting structure for the top, a plurality ofside shelf members hinged to the top, and ,intervening vertically swingin corner sections having beveled corners and ginge connection with the corners o f the top and adapted to be supported by the end portions of the side hinge members.
