Description

Nov. 2, 1948. 2. ZUCKRMAN 2,452,979
EXTENS I ON TABLE Filed Feb. 15, 1945 ATTORNEY Y Patented Nov. 2, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' EXTENSION TABLE Emil Zuckerman, Stamford, Conn. Application February 15, 1945, Serial No. 577,949 s claims. (cl. :n1-62)` This invention relates to a table of the type formed with a series of extension leaves that are movable into a position to extend the size of the table. Tables of the' particular class are Well known, but there has never been developed an inexpensive type of extension table that is sturdy, pleasing to the eye, and is properly supported by legs when the table top is in its extended form.
My invention contributes a table that is inexpensive to construct, is exceedingly pleasing to the eye. presents a sightly and complete appearance whether the leaves are in an extended position or in a folded or retracted position, and is properly supported when the leaves are extended.
As one feature of my invention, the corners of the main central square portion of the table top are truncated and preferably formed to extend into the peripheral outline of the table leaves when those leaves are in `an extended position. I thereby leave available parts of the main table top at the periphery thereof to which table legs may be secured in either fixed or hinged relation. It is also' apparent that my table has a continuous Smooth periphery when the leaves are extended or are folded under the table.
A further feature of the invention resides in the utilization of a detent for holding each of the leaves of theY table in an extended position, each detent being movable into and out of supporting relation to its particular leaf through the mounting thereof in an opening in the side of the main table top.
As a further feature of the invention, the detents are adapted to be maintained in position to close the openings when the leaves of the table are retracted, thereby presenting a very sightly appearance. `a still further feature of this portion of my invention, means are provided on each of the table leaves for holding the detente in the position indicated and thereby maintaining closed the several openings.
It is a further feature of my invention that the same means on the table leaves that hold the detents in closing relation to the openings, limit the throw of the detents when the several leaves are held in extended position.
and held under the main table top. Fig. 3 is .a
a view of the underside of the table with the leaves retracted as in Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are sections taken respectively along lines 5-5 and' 6-6 of Fig. 3. Fig. 'l is a section taken along lines 'I--T of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a perspective view illustrating a detent and its relation to the main table top and one of the leaves.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the main or central table top portion is designated by reference numeral IB and is formed with a downwardly extending flange I I. corner of the substantially square central table top I0, the ends of the sides of the table are cut away to form a peripheral surface I3 that is preferably curved for a purpose hereinafter indicated. The ilange II isdeepened at I2 under the surface I3, the deep flange I2 being utilized to facilitate the mounting of a leg I4 at each corner of the table. Through this construction the four legs act to support the table at itsv periphery when thel table is extended to form a' for ready pivoting into a folded position underI the table, as is understood by those skilled in A still further feature of my invention relates the art.
A pair of hinges I5 are secured at each side of the table top I0, the several hinges I5 supportf ing four extension leaves I6. It is obvious/that. the several leaves I5 may be maintained in their extended position of Figs. l and 3, wherein they are shown as forming with the central table top it a complete circular table. that the outer periphery of this table will include the edges I3 of the several deepened anges I2 to which I have already alluded.
ends 2l. The ends of each slot detent 29 as will be readily apparent. Each detent 2t is rotable from a position closing its?V particular slot I8, into the leaf supporting posif.. In Fig. 3 one of the tion `illustrated in Fig. 3. detents 20 is shown within a cutaway portion I6 in its position of Fig. 1. It will be noted that the cutaway portion 23 has extending therefrom a pin 25. In Fig. 3 it is readily seen that it is the function of the pin 24 to limit the throw ofA the detent 20.
If it is desired to move the leaves I6 from their' At each Also, if the legs are to be secured by It will be noted the position of Fig. 4. They will now be tucked under the table, as is further well illustrated' in Fig. '7, a series of springs 25 being provided to hold the several leaves I6 in their retracted position. It is well to note that the .several leaves I6 are not in obstructing relation to the several spaces between the legs 'id and therefore do not interfere with the normal use of the table.
VVIn the position of the parts in Figs. l and 7, it will be noted that the limit pin 2li now is against an edge` of the detent 2i? shown in Figs. a and 7 so` as to, prevent rotation of that detent in one direction to the position of Figs. 3 and El. Sine` the, -detent cannot. rotate in the other direction beoallso'of its coaction with the bevelled surfaces 22` of the slot [8, it isy obvious that the detent will be held in closingy relation to the slot I3. It is therefore seen that. regardless of the positioning oi the leaves, the table always presents a finishedl appearance with all openings, or slots closed, and with the table top properly proportioned and Shaped.
Those skilled inthe art will, of course, appreciate also that, when the table is in its extended forrnof Fig. l, it will be supported at itsv periphery and therefore will be completely stable since the legs will be at substantially a maximum distancefrom the center of the table.
,l now claim;
l. In stable top,` av central main portion havin g a periphery comprising a Series of Straight edges, a series of leaves each having an outer pe-l ripheral curved edge. aud an inner straight edge with. said inner straight, edges hinged to the straight edges of the said Central main portion for movement 'urto` position to forni an extension of said main portion and for hinged movement torlie retracted adjacent the under surface of said. central main portion whereby substantially not to obstruct. the space under the table top,l the said' straight edges of said central main portion having each an opening exposed over the straight edge of each of said leaves when said leaves lie retracted, a supporting de tent pivoted for rotation in each of said openings for movenient oi a part thereof under said leaves when said leaves are extended whereby to, support the Said leaves, in a horizontal table extending posi.- tion, and said detents having each a surface for flush. alignment with the Surfaces .of 'the straight edges of said central main portion when' said detents are rotated relatively to said openings for withdrawing said detent parts from under saidleaves and into said openings.
In a table top a central main portion having a peripheryV comprising a series of straight edges, a seriesof leaves each having an' outer peripheral ourved edge. and an meer Straight edge with said inner straightedges hinged to the straight edges of the'said central main portion for mevrtlflet `into position, to form 'an extension of said niain portion and for hinged movement to lie, retracted adjacent, the under surface of said central main portion whereby substantially not to obstruct the space under the table top, the said straight edges of said central main por-V. haring each opening exposed., over the '4 straight edge of each of said leaves when said leaves lie retracted, a supporting detent pivoted for rotation in each of said openings for movement from a first position in alignment with said opening to a support position with parts thereof under said leaves to support the said leaves in a horizontal table extending position, said detents when in alignment with said openings having each a, surface iiush with the surfaces of the edges of said central main portion, holding and limitingv means on said leaves, said holding and limiting means limiting said detents to rotation relatively to said openings to said support position when said leaves are extended, means between portions of said detents and said central main portion for stopping rotation of said detents atjsaid first position in alignment with said openings Vwhen said detents are rotated towards said rst positionV from said support position to allow said leaveslto hinge into retracted position, and said holdingv and limiting means. moving with said leaves as said leaves hinge into retracted position for holding said detents against rotation froinsaid first position towards said support position, whereby said detents are then held by said holding and limiting means and said means between portions thereof` and theY central main portion against any rotation whatsoever.
3. In a table top, a central main portion, a series of leaves hinged to the periphery of the said central main portion for movement into position to form an extension of said main portion and for hinged movement to lie retracted adjacent the under surface of'said central main portion whereby substantially not to obstruct the space under the table top, a supporting detent pivoted under the said central main portion oppositev each of said leaves for movement from a rst position to a support position with parts thereof under said leaves to support the Said leaves in a horizontal table extending position, holding and limiting means on said leaves, said holdingV and limiting means limiting Sadl (it-,ents to rotation relatively to said openings. to. said support position when said leaves are, extended, means `between portions of said detents, and said central` main portion for stopping rotation. of said detents at said first position when said detents are. rotated towards said iirst position from said support position to allow said leavesv to hinge into retracted position, and said holding 'and limiting means moving with said leaves as said leaves hinge into retracted position for holdg ing said detents against rotation from said i'lrstA position towards said support position, whereby said detents are then held by said holding and limiting means and said means between portions thereof and the central main portion, against any rotation whatsoever.
