-Tl1is invention relates to means for facilitating the flClJLlStllleIlt of carbons upon fan fold orcontinuous-bilhng machines. This typeof machine has a set of carbon-holding blades mounted in stepped order upon a carrier, a carbon being clamped upon each blade, the carrier itself being operable. to shift the carbons rearwardly between the plies of a work-web.
. Thecarbon-blades may be detached from the. carrier in order to secure the carbons thereto. It is found diflicult'to square up the carbon on the blade, so that the same may feed properly with the web, and it is troublesome to handle the same, due to the thinness of the paperand to the carbon-coating. v -The carbons must have their front edges aligned after being placed on the machine, which is usually done by tearing off their 'leadingedges by means of the usual front paper-knife onthe fan-fold machine.
To overcome the difficulties in aligning the side and leading edges of the carbons, a feature of the invention provides a separate special table or .jig upon which a pack containing the desired number of carbons may be aligned prior to placing them upon the .ma-
'chine' By means of edge gages the pack may be aligned and squared up with respect tothe carbon-blades in a predetermined manner upon said table. The blades maybe fastened upon the table to. squarely overlie the rear portionofthe gaged carbons at spacedoif distances to allow different predetermined lengths ofcarbons to be attached to their respective carbon-blades, so that the leading carbon-edges will register when the blades are mounted upon the machine.

A carbon-blade with its well-known pivot- 3 ed clamp open is placed over the top carbon and together with the clamped end of the carbon is swung over and placed nearer the bottom of the table, thereby permitting the next carbon-blade to be placed over the second carbon, and located in the following set of holes, when the operation of attaching the carbon may berepeated. In thispreparatory manner each bladeis loaded with the appropriate length of carbon so as to compensate for said stepped arrangement of the carbon-blades on the machine. o
A feature includes the provision of a side edge gage upon said table and ofa displaceable rear edge gage. ;The latter gage, by means of a suitable connection, may be held in operative position at the rear end of the table until the carbon-pack is properly ali ned and trued upon the table with respect to the blades. 'Hereafter said rear edge gage may be displaced or. dropped below the working face of the table so as to clear the Way for v the swingable clamp upon the carbon-blades and for the carbons to be mounted thereon. \Vith the rearedge gage withdrawn, the rear portion of the carbon may be freely manipulated to be folded over the carbon-blade, and the clamp freely swung, as shown.

A pack of carbons 13 may be positioned upon the table with the aid of a side edge gage 1 1 and a rear edge gage 15. The side edge gage is adjustable, according to the width of the carbons, by means of ordinary screwand-slot connections 16, and carries mounted upon its outer edge a clamp-device 17 which is operative to hold the pack of carbons in gaged positions upon thetable. The clampdevice may be effective to hold the left-hand margin of the pack, and may be the one disclosed in the patent to Thieine 1,617,728. The rear edge gage, for purposes hereinafter to appear, may be raised and lowered between effective and ineitective position. It includes a flat bar 18 terminating at the right-hand end in a'struck-up angular projection or finger-piece 19, by which said gage may be moved sidewardly in either directionthereof and raised or lowered, respectively, due to the presence of an inclined slot 20 at each end of said bar 18, and shouldered screws 21 coasting with the slots and threaded int the rear part of the blocks 12-.
Lateral extensions 22 and 23 of the table 10 furnish the base for attaching the carbonholding blades, and are provided with paired sets of holes 24, in which a well-known carbon-holding blade 25, by means of pins 26 thereon, may be stacked so as to squarely overlie the rear portions of the carbons.
After a pack, including the desired number of carbons, is gaged and clamped down, as shown in Figure 1, an operator may proceed to attach the carbon-blades to the carbon-ends in a manner most clearly shown in Figure 3. Since the pack is securely held in place by the clamp-device 17, the operator now may lower the rear edge gage, .as ll'lCllcated, below theworking face of the table, to clear the way for freely handling the carbon rear ends. Upon the'standai'd carbonblade is pivoted a carbondiolding clamp 1-7. Nhen the rear gage is withdrawn, the clamp 21'' may be swung without obstruction. A left carbon-blade with its clamp open may be placed over the top carbon and attached at one side to the table in the lower set of holes; the top of the carbon is then folded forwardly over the blade and the clamp 27 moved to efiective position to hold the carbon creased upon the blade. The blade is then lifted out of the holes and, together with the clamped end of the carbon, swung over and placed nearer the bottom of the table, thereby permitting the next carbonblade to be placed over the second carbon and attached to the table in the lower right set of holes when the second carbon is folded over the blade and clamped, As now this second blade is lifted from its holes and placed upon the front part of "the table, it permits the operation of attaching the carbons to their respective blades to be repeated according-to the remaining sets of holes, thus affording the desired variation in lengths of the carbons, with the result that the leading carbon edges are properly linedu p and registered after the blades are placed upon the machine. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described .my invention, I claim:
1. 3. A device for facilitating the proper folding of the rear ends of carbon-sheets over the carbon-blades of fan-fold typewriting machines, said device including, in combination, a table upon which to place carbons for preparatory alignment, gaging means upon said table to position carbons thereon preparatory to attaching the same upon the carhon-blades, means for clamping the carbons down upon the table, and means upon the table for locating carbon-blades thereon, said blades to squarely overlie the rear-ends of said gaged carbons at predetermined spaced-01f distances, said gaging means including a rear edge gage-me1nber movably mounted upon said table and displaceable from effective position to clear the way for free manipulation of the rear carbon-edges. at. A device for facilitating the proper attachment of the rear ends of carbon-sheets upon the carbon-blades of fan-fold typewriting machines, where the rear end of each carbon is folded squarely over its blade, and where a pivoted clamp upon said blade is swung to hold a creased carbon in position upon its blade, said device including, in combination, a table upon which to place carbons for pre paratory alignment, gaging means upon said table to position carbons thereon preparatory to attaching the same upon their carbonblades, and means upon the table for locating the carbon-blades thereon to squarely overlie the rear ends of said gaged carbons at predetermined spaced-off distances, said gaging means including a rear edge gage-member movably mounted upon said table and displaceable from effective position to expose the rear carbon-edges and to clear the way for free manipulation of said pivoted clamp to be swung out beyond said rear edge when a carbon is being attached. 5. A device for facilitating the proper folding of the rear ends of carbon-sheets over the carbon-blades of fan-fold, typewriting machines, said device including, in combination, a table upon which to place carbons for preparatory alignment, gaging means upon said table to position carbons thereon preparatory to attaching the same upon their" carbon-blades, clamping means for holding said carbons down upon the table, and means upon the table for locating the carbon-blades thereon, said blades to squarely overlie the carbons, there being a double screw-and-slot connection betweenthe rear edge gage and the table, the slots being inclined so that sideward shift-movement of the gage in either direction will raise or lower the same respectively, the upper or effective position being determined by a curved extension or kink at one end of each slot within which the cooperating screws may be lodged.
6. A device for facilitating the proper folding of the rear ends of carbon-sheets over the carbon-blades of a fan-fold typewriting machine, said device including, in combination, a table upon which to place a pack of carbons for preparatory alignment, gaging means upon said table to position the carbons thereon preparatory to attaching the same upon their carbon-blades, manually-operable means for clamping the pack down upon said table at the front portion thereof, and means for locating the carbon-blades upon the table, said blades to squarely overlie the rear ends of said gaged carbons at predetermined spaced-off distances from the rear carbon- .for preparatory alignment, a side edge gage mounted upon said table and settable laterally according to the width of the carbons, a displaceable rear edge gage, both gages serving to position the carbons upon the table preparatory to attaching the same upon their carbon-blades, a swingable clamp having a finger-piece and mounted upon said side edge gage and effective to clamp the pack down upon the table, and means for locating the carbon-blades upon the table, said blades to squarely overlie the rear ends of said gaged carbons at predetermined spaced-off distances from the rear carbon edge, said rear edge gage including a bar-like member at one end terminating in a finger-piece whereby to be displaced after the pack is gaged and clamped down upon said table.
