UNITED STATEs PATE 'OFFIGE.

Spccification formin g part of Letters Patent No. 173,465, dated February 15, 1876 application filed January 26, 1cm.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN G. HEHR and JOHN G. BILLING, of South Bend, inthe county of St. Joseph and State'of Indiana,
do hereby declarethat the following is a full,
clear, and-exact description of the construction, and operation of the same, reference bfeing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical elevation of my invention, partly Fig. 2 is atop-p1an view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the underside. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the several devices constituting my invention.
This invention isdesigned as an. improvement upon the patent granted to J. G. Hehr, N 0, 169,263, October 26, 1875, wherein are employed weighted levers arranged in connection with hinged or pivoted hoods, so that the tipping or upsetting of the lamp will cause the weighted levers to bear' against and throw either of the hoods over and cover the wick,
thereby immediately extinguishing the flame.
The object and purpose of the present invention, therefore, are to arrange the weighted levers in a'manner that will economize space, and thereby take up less room, which will admit of the levers being more readily adapted to the various forms and styles of burners; also, in providing a means whereby the hoods maybe operated independentlyof the weighted levers when found necessary to extinguish the flame, the construction and combination of the several parts being hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A is designed to represent the base, formed with an annular screw threaded portion, a, and to which is connected, by suitable means, the
frame B, having hinged thereto a cap, 0. Passing through the base A is a wick-tube, b, to which is connected a wick-raiser, 0. These parts, as above described, may be changed or modified, as found expedient, without departing from my invention, as I have merely shown this particular construction of parts to best illustrate the arrangement of the devices constituting my invention.
plate, 0, held in position by a rod, (1, such plates beingformed with tongues f, passing down through an elongated slot in the frame B, which also assists in holding the plate in position. The plates 6 have turned-up lips g,
through which the rods (1 pass, and upon which work the hoods h. The weighted levers, as represented at D, are constructed in the following manner: Plates -i are formed with side flanges j, which are bent around a flat weight, It, 'to retain and hold it to the plate 'i, said plate being connected to the hood h by a tongue; 1, formed on the plate, and passing up through a slot in the hood. .The plates t are also formed with ears or flanges m, by which the same are pivoted to the flanges a of the plate 6 by short rods 0. It will be seen that the weighted levers are suspended or pivoted in such a manner that the slightest tipping of the lamp will cause either of the two hoods to cover the wick and immediately extinguish the flame.
When it is desired to operate the hoods by other than automatic means, a curved lever, E, is employed, the same being connected to a plate, p, by tongues q, upon the under side of the frame B, the curved end of the lever E pressing against the under side of the weighted levers D, when pressure is brought upon the finger-piece 1' of the curved levers E, thereby throwing the hoods in position over the wick and extinguishing the flame.
Although we have described the weights k as being connected to the-plates i by flanges j, we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to this particular construction, as the weights may be secured to the plates by casting the metal around them, or forming the plate withseveral holes, by which a layer of metal may be held together upon each side of the plate during the process of molding the metal around it, as these means, together with various others, may be employed without departing from the principle of our invention.
Having now fully described the construction of our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

2. The combination, with pivoted hoods h, I 4 JOHN G. HEHR. of the weighted levers D, consisting of the JOHN G. BILLING. plates 5, with flanges j and weights'hsaid plates or levers being connected to the hoods,- Witnesses:
It, by tongues l, passing through slots therein, DAVID HASLANGER, substantially as and for the purpose specified. JACOB P. FUTTER.
