DEVICE FOR ASSEMBLING METAL GRIDS Filed Feb. 24, 1928 ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR ASSEMBLING METAL GRIDS Application filed February 24, 1928. Serial No. 256,601.
My invention relates to an improved device for assembling metal grids or gratings composed of rigid metal bars.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a device for this purpose which will be particularly useful for making the railings of fire escapes and the like.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended merely to generally explain the same, and not to limit it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved apparatus utilized for carrying out the improved method.

An angular frame comprising an upright channel bar 15 and an inclined channel bar 10 is suitably mounted upon any foundation. The inclined channel bar 10 is connected to the upright channel bar 15 by means of a connecting member 16 which is secured to the upright member 15 and the inclined member 10 by means of suitable rivets 18. The connecting member 16 is also secured to a top angle iron guide 11 by means of rivets, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The bottom of the inclined channel bar 10 preferably extends into the ground or other foundation and it is there connected by means of rivets 17 to a lower guide rail 14, the bottom of which also extends into the ground or other foundation upon which the apparatus is mounted.
The first longitudinal bar 21 of the grating is placed upon the projecting flange of the bottom member 14. The inclined channel bars 10 are respectively provided with guide jaws 12 and 13 which are provided with v fian es or lugs which are suitably connected 59 to t e members 10 by means of rivets 19.

As shown in Fig. 4, each of the transverse bars 23 is provided with a reduced neck, the end of which can be upset or enlarged by means of a suitable riveter N so as to form an enlarged or rivet-like head 24.
When the parts are assembled, the upper reduced ends of the transverse bars 23 can be subjected to the action of the riveter N so that the bar 20, for example, can be firmly secured to the transverse bars 23. When the longitudinal perforated member 21 is placed 011 the lower rail 14, the respective transverse members 23 can be placed on their respective supports 10, so that they slide into assembled position with the longitudinal perforated member 21. The supports 10 are long enough to enable the second longitudinal perforated member to be assembled with members 23. i
The partially formed grid is then turned around on the apparatus so that the bar 21 now occupies the position firstoccupied by the bar 20. The riveter N can now be used to complete the assembling by enlarging the second series of reduced ends of the transverse bars 23.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous 0 changes and omissions could be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A device for assembling a grid comprising a support having a plurality of sups5 porting members, each said supporting memher being provided with guide means adapted to hold a transverse grid member having a reduced neck at each end thereof thereon. said device also having at the ends of said to supporting members a retaining flange adapted to hold a longitudinal perforated grid member against movement in a direction parallel to said supporting members, so that said transverse grid members can be assembled with their reduced necks fitting into the perforations of said longitudinal grid member, said support extending beyond the reduced necks of said transverse grid members after they have been assent no bled with the longitudinal perforated grid member, so that said support can also hold in position a second longitudinal perforated grid member, through whose perforations the adjacent reduced necks of the transverse grid members can extend.
2. A device for assembling a grid comprising a support having a plurality of inclined and substantially parallel supporting members, said supporting members having guide jaws adapted to loosely hold thereon transverse grid members having reduced necks at their ends, said supporting members having at their bottom ends a retaining flange adapted to hold a longitudinal perforated grid member in whose perforations said reduced necks extend, said support being sufficiently long to hold a second perforated longitudinal grid member at the upper ends of said supporting members, so that the reduced necks of said transverse grid members can extend through the perforations of the second grid member.
3. A device for assembling a grid comprising holding means for loosely holding a plurality of grid members having reduced necks at their ends in'inclined position so that said grid members are free to slide downwardly with respect to said holding means, and additional holding means adapted to hold a perforated grid member transversely with respect to said first-mentioned grid members with said reduced necks fitting in the perforations of said grid members, said additional holding means being adapted to prevent any downward movement of said grid members first mentioned and of said perforated grid member.
