TOILET SEAT HINGE I Filed A ril 9. 192a miomeg Paul (X dohnsoin Patented Nov. 5, 1929 r ric- PA'UL A. JOHNSON, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO ALVIN E. JAGOBSON, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN TOILET-SEAT HINGE Application filed April 9,
This invention relates to hinges particular- 1y adapted for use with toilet seats and covers therefor. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to construct a very simple practical and economical hinge structure which is adapted to be used in hingedly connecting a toilet seat to the bowl and also hingedly mount a cover over and with respect to the scat.
An understanding of the invention and the preferred structural embodiment thereof may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation illustrating the use of a pair of said hinges in conjunction with a toilet seatand cover.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 illustrates in perspective the several parts of the hinge.
Like referencecharacters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The bowl 1 is provided with a rearwardly extending horizontal ledge 2 at its rear side and upper end through which, at two spaced apart points, openings are made for the passage of bolts 3 threaded at their lower ends. Said bolts 3 at their upper ends are equipped with enlarged heads which have a lower flange 4 to bear against the upper side of the ledge 2 above which the head 5 is located. Heads 5 at their outer sides are formed with horizontal cylindrical openings 6 which extend nearly through said heads 5, but which are closed at their inner ends.
l/Vhen the bolts 3 are passed downwardly through the openings in the ledge 2, the flanges 4 bear against the upper side of said ledge and are drawn tightly thereagainst by a nut 7 screwed on to the lower end of each bolt 3 and against a washer 8 which is interposed between the nut and the lower side of said ledge.
A hinge member is designed to be pivotally connected with each of the heals 5. This hinge member includes at its lower end a cylindrical pin 9 which seats in the opening 6 in each head 5. From the outer end of the pin 9 the hinge member extends upwardly 1928. Serial No. 268,768.
and outwardly at an angle to the vertical, male ing a section 10 which at its upper end is turned to extend forward in a horizontal plane, making a section 11,- and terminates at two sections 16 of the pin being inserted in a toilet seat cover 17 at opposite side edges and at the rear end thereof. The hinge member sections 10 and 11 lie respectivelyv back and above the seat 18, screws passing through the sections 10 into the rear edge of said seat and similar screws 12 passing through the horizontal sections 11 into the upper side of the seat adjacent its rear end. It is evident that the seat and cover may be assembled with the bowl very simply and expeditiously and that the seat and cover may be turned together about the axis of the pins 9 in an upward direction or the seat alone may be turned upwardly about the axis ofthe pins 16.
This construction of hinge is particularly practical and economical to make. The hinge members are very easily fabricated atlow cost. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim: a j
1. A hinge comprising, a supporting post having a head with a lateral opening in aside thereof, a hinge member including an intermediate vertical section, a horizontal pm at the lower end thereof to enter the opening in said head, a horizontal forwardly extending section at the upper end of the vertical section and an upwardly extending head at theforward end of said horizontal section having a lateral opening therein, and a hinge pin provided with an annular outwardly extending collar a short distance from one end thereof,
said hinge pin being received in the opening of the last mentioned head at one end thereof with the collar lying against a side of the head.
2. In combination, a horizontal support, two posts attached to said support having heads at their upper ends each with a lateral opening therein, said heads being located above the support, a hinge member pivotally in ou n ted on each head having a lateral pin at its lower end received in the opening of the otal connection, a head attached to said bowl having an opening therein and a pin at the lower end of the vertical portion of the hinge plate extending into the opening of the head for pivotal connection.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.

head and a section extending upwardlyand outwardly in a vertical plane from said pin and thence extending forwardly in a horizontalplane to provide a second horizontal section terminating at the forward end thereof in a vertical head having a lateral opening at the inner side'thereof, a seat against the rear edge and "the upper side of which said vertical and horizontal sections of the hinge members engage, means passing through said "sections of the hinge member into said seat,
and a cover located between the upstanding heads-of said hinge members and pivotally mounted on and between the same and having pivots received in the openings in said heads.
3. A hinge comprising, a vertical post having a head at its upper end, said head having a lateral opening in one side thereof, a'hinge inember includlng an upper horlzontal sec- 'tion terminating at its forward end in a verticall extending head and having a downward y and inwardly extending section located substantiall in a vertical plane integrally connected t erewith at its rear end, the
lower end of said last named sectionhaving a laterally extending pin adapted to be freely and detachably received in the opening in said head of the post, the head at the front end of said horizontal section of the hinge member having a lateral opening therein.
y 4. The combination with a toilet bowl, and
"a seat and covertherefor, of a hinge plate comprising a vertical portion locatedv at the rear edge of said seat, a horizontal portion extending forward from the upper end of said V 7 rear edge of said seat, a horizontal portion extending forward'from theupper end of said vertlcal portion and located against the turned'portion at the forward end of said horizontal portion: having an opening therein,a h nge pin on said cover extending into 'said'openingon the upturnedportion for piv- "upper surface of said seat, an upwardly
