CURB WITHOUT MOUTHPIECE Filed March :51, 1927 I71 V677 6'02 Offo C/emens Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITED STAT$ Para CURB WITHOUT Iv'IOUTI-IPIECE Application filed March 31, 1927, Serial No. 180,031, and. in Germany April 3, 1926.
My invention relates to a curb without mouth-piece, in which when the reins are taken up the cheeks of the curb are simultaneously operating a nose-strap and a curb-chain or chin-strap. I
According to my invention I provide a hanger or suspending rod on each side of the head-stall preferably at both sides of a noseband. Such hanger or suspending rod supports pivotally the cheeks of the curb between their ends and a special nose-strap connected thereto as well asthe curb-chain or chin-strap equally connected to the cheeks.
For the purpose of explaining my invention some examples embodying the same have been shown in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a complete bridle comprising the curb without mouth-piece according to my invention, attached to a suitable headstall, the reins being loose.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the reins taken up.
Fig. 3 shows a cheek in a modified form.
Fig. 4 shows a cheek in another modification.
Fig. 5 shows a modified hanger with the cheek according to Fig. 3, pivotally attached thereto.
Fig. 6 is a front View of the hanger according to Fig. 5, the cheek not being shown.
A pair of hangers 0r suspending rods 7) made from any suitable material such as steel, nickel-alloy, brass or the like, is secured at each side to a head-stall, preferably by means of a nose-band a connected in any usual or suitable manner to the cheek-piece (l of the head-stall. The hangers b may be connected to the nose-band a by means of suitable holes or the like in the nose-band. At or near the lower end of each hanger b the cheek cl is pivotally secured at 7'. At or near the upper end of the cheeks d, a chin-chain c or a suitable chin-strap is attached. The reins s are connected to some suitable parts of the lower ends of the cheeks d by means of rings or e es.
A nose-strap e is connected with the hangers at 1' where the pivot for the cheek d is fixed to said hanger. Vhen the reins are taken up the cheeks are rocked around the pivots 131a suitable traction being exerted it both on the nose-strap e and the chin-chain 0. By means of my device described above a suitable pressure-may be put on the nose- I strap 6 so that the rider or driver may exert a very eificient influence on the horse. On the other hand, the entire bridle is very convenient to the horse, it fits perfectly without rubbing or unduly pressing the horses sensitive parts of the head, andthe objectionable mouthpiece is avoided.
p In .Fig. 3 a modifiedcheek d is shown which is adapted to be secured to the hanger at 1 in thesame manner as the cheek, d in Figures 1 and 2. 'The cheek all shown in Fig, 3 has a suitableholer for being pivotally attached to the hanger band is provided with several rings f, g, 71. so that one or two reins may be attached to each cheek ina manner adapted to exert more or less pressure according to the sensitiveness of the horse. A hook'i is'fixed to the upper part of the check al and is made preferably integral with said check. .The hook is adapted to carrythe end of the chin-chain or the like. I
In Fig. 4 another modification d of a cheek-piece is shown, showing the general shape of the cheek of an S-curb. r is a hole for pivotally securing a check d to the hanger b. m is a ring for attaching the rein, substantially on the same level as the pivot r his another ring at the lower end of the cheek, to receive another rein.
A rein attached to the eye 7 (Fig. 3) or to the ring m (Fig. 4) is adapted to exert an action upon the horse which may be com pared with the action of a mildsnaffle where as the reins attached to the eyes 9 or h (Fig. 3) and is (Fig. 4), respectively, exert an action similar to the action of a curb. 2' is a hook for the insertion of the end of a chinchain or the like.
In Fig. 5 a modified form ofv a hanger b is shown, the upper part 71. thereof being provided with an eye for connecting the hanger with the cheek-piece of the head-stall. In a front extension of the hanger 6 another eye or slot 0 is provided for engagement with the nose-strap 6 The axis of the slot or eye is inclined in respect to the axis of the hanger I V b to give a certain lift to the nose-strap e and to prevent such nose-strap from slipping down on the nose of the horse.
A stud 9 projects from the surface of the 5 hanger -6 1' is a pivot for the check d which, in the present example, is similar to the cheek al shown in Fig.- 3. 1
In Fig. 6 a front view of the hanger is shown with the cheek d omitted. This figure 10 shows the stud p more clearly. Such stud 3) acts as a stop for the cheek (i when the reins are loose and the horse throws up its head. In such case the stud p will prevent reversing of the cheek. When using the hanger shown in Figures 5 and 6 the nose-band a may be omitted.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to particular examples embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the constructions shown in the drawings, and
t a va i us ch ge m y e m d in he g neral arrangement of the apparatus and the c n tru o f i P ts W thou epar i 5 from the invention,
What I claim is p 1. A bitless. curb comprising a head stall,
a metal hanger plate having a" pivot and removably attached to said head stall, a nose strapremovably attached to said hanger plate,
a eekpi c pio ally mounted n said piv and havingafi xed hook and rings integral therewith 0 opp s te e d t ereof nd a n-ch n d ha y enga g sa d. fixed hook- I 2. A bitless curb comprising a head stall,
a metal hanger plate having a pivot and pro.-
vided with an eyelet for removable attachv ment to said head stall and provided with a 40 second e elet inclined to the axis of said hanger p ate, a nose strap removably attached to said second eyelet, a cheek-piece pivotally mounted on said pivot and having a fixed hook and rings integral therewith on opposite ends thereof and a chin-chain detachably engagin said fixed hook.
3. a bitless curb, in combination, a head stall, a metal hanger plate having a pivot and provided with an eyelet for removable at- 59 tachment to said head stall and provided with I a second eyelet inclined to the axis of said hanger plate, 'a nose strap removably attached to said second eyelet, a cheek-piece pivotally mounted on said pivot and having a fixed '55 hook and rings integral therewith on opposite end thereof, said cheek-piece being integral with an eye adjacent to the ivotal axis thereof and a chin-chain detachahly enga ng d fi ed h okt [so In testimony whereof. I have aflixed my signature. Y
