VANITY CASE Application led October 24, 1928. Serial No. 314,553.

This invention relates to vanity cases, and has for its primary object to provide a vanity case which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and in which a novel means is incorporated for securely holding and completely protecting a lipstick or similar cosmetic for easy accessibility and Without necessitating the opening of the case.

It is a more particular object of my inven- 1o tion to provide a vanity. case in the general form of a book and having a hinged cover or closure together with means confined against the case body at the hinged end of saidcover for removably receiving a llipstick holder and from which said holder may be laterally withdrawn at one side edge of the case.

It is another feature of my invention to provide a common ornamental flexible covering material such as imitation leather for the cover and body wall ot the case and for a tubular receiver for the lipstick holder and said covering material constituting the sole means which retains said tubular member '-5 in associated relation with the case body.

When the case is closed said tubular member is held by said covering material in the plane of the case body, while upon the opening ot' the hinged cover or closure for the case, said tubular member is permitted to assume a slight angular relation relative to the plane of the case body. This construction thus permits of a very clog arrangement of the tubular receiver for the lipstick holder with respect to .the hinge of the cover or lid for the case and the movement of said cover or lid to its full open position.

It is a further general object ot my invention to provide a vanity case of the above character, the several parts of which are of relatively simple construction and compactly arranged so that the article will present a neat and attractive appearance, and will occupy a minimum of space in a purse or hand- 45 b Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved vanity case, and in the form and construction of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoin'ed claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates thebody plate ofthe case. Upon one side of this body plate a relativelythin sheet metal frame 6 is arranged. said frame having marginal flanges 7 constituting side and endv walls for the case body, one of said end flanges and the opposite side Hanges being inwardly spaced from the corresponding edges of the Y body plate 5. For the purpose ot convenient- 85 `ly and rigidly connecting the plate 5 and the frame 6 with each other, tongues 8 are struck from the body plate 5 and bent outwardly and lclinched upon the inwardly eXtendingf-langes of the frame 6 which are disposed in parallel 90 relation to the plate 5.

One of the end flanges 7 oty the frame 6 is provided centrally of its upper edge with a hinged knuckle 9 with which similar hinged knuckles 11 on one end of a cover frame 10 are aligned to receive a hinge pintle 12. The frame 10 is secured upon one side of the cover plate 13 by means of tongues 14 struck from said plate in a similar manner to the attachment of the frame 6 to the body plate 5 as latch element may be actuated by a suitably formed finger piece 18 projecting outwardly through an opening in the end flange 7 of the frame. An angular sheet metal strip indicated at 19 is suitably secured within the end of the frame 6 and covers the greater portion of the latch member 17, the covering flange of' said strip having a central opening as shown at 20 in Fig. 2 of the drawings, through which the keeper lug 16 may extend when the cover of the case is closed.

Within the body of the case between the angular metal strip 19 and the flange 7 upon which the cover of the case is hinged a powder container or receptacle 21 is adapted to be arranged. Each of the side flanges 7 of the frame 5 is provided with a slight indentation indicated at 22 forming an internal protrusion which coacts with one of the side flanges of the container 21 to securely hold the same in place. The corresponding side flanges of the cover frame 10 are also indented as at 23 providing external recesses which accommodate the internal protrusions formed-by the indentations 22 on the flanges 7 wheny the cover of the case is closed.

It will be noted that the body plate 5 and the cover plate 13 in contour simulate the two covers of a book, the flange 7 upon which the plate 13 is hingedly supported representing the back or binding of the book. In accordance with my present invention, for the purpose of receiving and retaining a lipstick holder in convenient association with the case structure, I provide a tubular member 24 preferably of sheet metal and rectangular in cross sectional form. This tubular member extends substantially across the entire width of the case and one end thereof is closed as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This member is arranged with one side thereof in closev contact with the flange 7 of the body frame to which the cover is hinged, but is not secured or fixed to said flange. The lipstick holder 28 as shown in detail in Fig. 7 may be of conventional form and consists of a rectangular metal tube open at one end and having a slot 29 in one side wall thereof to receive the finger piece or stud 30 of a slidable member 31 arranged within said tube 28 and in which one end of the lipsticky indicated at 32 is fitted. To the other end of the holder 28 a small loop. or finger piece 33 is pivotally attached. The opposite side walls of the member 24 at the open end thereof are suitably notched or recessed as indicated at v34 to receive the projecting finger piece or button 30 when the lipstick holder is inserted within thev tubular member 24.

vTo the inner side of the lid or cover of the case, a mirror is preferably attached. As herein shown, this mirror may consist of a lchromium plated steel plate 35 of proper 'shape or form so that it may be closely fitted Within the flanges 15 of the cover frame. The protrusions formed by the indentations 23 of the side flanges 15 fit into notches or recesses in the side edges of the mirror plate and provide additional means of security therefor. From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts of my improved vanity case will be clearly and fully understood.

When the case is closed, it 'presents the novel and attractive appearance of a small book, the lipstickholder being entirely contained within the tubular member 24 and the pivoted finger piece 33 thereof lying between the marginal edges of `the cover and body plates of thecase which project laterally bevond the frame flanges 7. Thus, not only is the cosmetic itself completely protected, but the holder in which it is contained is quit-e inconspicuous though at all times accessible so that it may be instantly withdrawn from the tubular member 24 and used without necessitating the opening of the case itself. It will therefore, be appreciated that an article of this kind wherein the lipstick lholder is retained in a separate compartment external to the body of the case will be very serviceable and convenient in practical use.

lVhen it is desired to use the face powder, the case is'opened by pressing the finger piece 17 inwardly, thus releasing the latch. The lid or cover can then be raised to a vertically upright position. In this movement of the cover, the member 24 with the lipstick holder therein together with the covering material surrounding said member Will assume a slightly angular position relative to the body of the case as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This obviates the formation of a pronounced crease or crack in the covering material at the hinge line which would otherwise result from the frequent opening of the cover, if the member 24 was rigidly and permanently attached to the back flange 7 of the case frame. Such cracking of the covering material would of course, greatly detract from the ornamental appearance of the article. .v

I have herein referred to a construction of my new vanity case, which I have found to be very desirable and entirely practical for the purpose in View, and it will be evident that since the several parts thereof are of simple mechanical form, the device may be manufact-ured on a quantity production basis at relatively small cost. I have disclosed one preferred form of my improved vanity case, but it will nevertheless ,be understood that the essential features thereof might also be v tioned externally of the case and in contact with said body Wall thereof, and avfieiiible covering material for the outer side and the with the `body and cover of the case to retain the severaly parts in assembled relation.'

Ina vanity case, a case body and a lid or closure therefor hingedly connected with one of the body walls, a structurally independent tubular member arranged externally 'of the case and adapted to removably receive a lipstick holder, and a iexible covering material attached to the cover and theI side Wall of the case body and confining said tubular member in associated relation therewith and in bearing engagement against the body wall ofthe case upon which the cover is hinged.

A vanity case in the form of a book including a case body having aframe and a side plate therefor, marginal portions of said side plate projecting laterally beyond the frame, a cover hingedly mounted upon one of the frame walls, a tubular member positioned externally of the case in Contact with said frame wall, a metal strip secured to one side of said tubular member and of a length e ual to the width of said cover and the body p ate of the case, and a flexible covering material secured upon the cover and body' plates and said metal strip and confining said tubular member closely against the frame of the case body, said tubular member being open at one of its ends and adapted to receive a lipstick holder.

5. In a vanity case, a case body and a lid or cover therefor hingedly mounted upon one end wall of the case body, a rigid member extending transversely of the case in movable cont-act with the outer face of said end wall, and a single sheet of flexible material covering the outer surfaces of said cover and the side wall of the case body and enveloping said rigid member, said covering material being attached to said member at a point in lateral` ly spaced relation from the cover hinge whereby said member is flexibly connected with the cover for angular movement with respect thereto and in relation to the cover when the latter is opened or closed.
