Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MCGILL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED APPROACH-OPENING GATE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,335, dated May '19, 1857.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MCGILL, of Bualo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new Self-Acting Hingeless Oscillatory Gate Adapted to Farm and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon. l
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a self-acting hingeless oscillatory gate provided with cog-wheel and rack, together with levers, Wheels, and cords, so arranged as to enable it to be opened by driving a vehicle on certain levers in platform on one side of the gate and to shut it by driving on similar levers in platform on the other side of the gate.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I construct my gate so as to open and close laterally by the action of cog-Wheel A, working in a rack inserted in gate-rail B. Around the axle of cog-Wheel A are the ropes or chains C D, which extend down through the gate-post E under platform F, and are se* cured to levers G H I K, two of which are for closing the gate and two for opening same, so that when a vehicle approaches the gate it passes on lever G (the only one that is up) which sinks, thereby drawing the rope O and opening the gate. The vehicle then passes through and drives on lever K, (which had been raised by the sinking of lever G,) which causes the gate to shut. When the gate is open, the gate-rails M N O B run in upon the fence-rails V V V V. The binders Q Q are to hold the gate-rails on the rails of the fence, and the wheel S inserted between the binders Q Q on a line with rail N is to facilitate their motion to and fro. T is a track on which the gate runs, and wheel U inserted in post X is to assist it. When the gate is shut, the post X runs into a groove in gate-post Y to keep it from waggling.
This gate may also be made without levers G H I K and their appendages by placing on the axle ot cog-wheel A, a rope or chain with a weight attached to keep it closed. Z is a trough to protect levers G Il l-K and their appendages.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will now proceed to state what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of levers GH I K, rack B, and cog-wheel A, as set forth and described, for operating a gate.
GEORGE XV. MCGILL.
