IMPROVEMENTv IN APPARATUS FOR TREATING HID ES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,346, dated'February 8, 1876; application filed January 13, 1876.

, To all whom it may concern! Beit known thatLOHAaLEs LoUIs R0 YER, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Treat ing Hides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of the apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view, partly sectional. Fig. 3 is a side view, show- Fig. 4 is a face view of a clainping disk. Fig. 5 is a rear view thereof. 6 is a transverse section thereof.

My invention relates to improvements in means for treating hides, whereby they are converted into leather for the purpose of belting, lacings, 850.

The invention consists of a cage that may be readily opened, so that access is had to the hide on the shaft around which the hide is rolled. It also consists of a clamp for the hide, the same consisting of a disk with a studded face, and pressed against the hide by a set-screw, whereby the hide will be readily and firmly held.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a rotary shaft, to which power is imparted in any well-known manner, and on which the hide is to be wound, so as to be treated and converted into leather, as usually. B represents a cage, which consists of open or slatted work, and it is formed in sections B B,the frames of which are hinged to each other, so that the sections may be made to open from and close around the rotary shaft A. The sections of the cage will be closed, and the hide rolled on the shaft A, the cage preventing expansion of the roll.

If for any purpose it is required to reach the roll or shaft the sections of the cage are opened, and the roll or shaft is immediately accessible. When the cage is closed a bolt, latch, or other fastening will be employed to secure the sections.-

0 represents a clamp for the hide. This clamp consists of a disk with a studded face, and it is fitted in a vertical slot in the shaft A, in which slot the hide will be inserted. By tightening a set-screw, a, on the disk the clamp will be firmly pressed against the hide,.

and the latter will be securely held.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is s l 1. The rotary shaft A, in combination with the cage B, formed of opening and closing sections B B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The clamp 0, consisting of a disk with a studded face, combined and operating with the slotted shaft and set-screw a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
