*PHILIP WERUM, OF STRYKER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,450, dated March 7, 1876; application filed December 7, 1875. .t
To all whom t may concern t Be it known that I, PHILIP WERUM, of Stryker, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trusses, of which the following is a specification:
The object of the iirst part of nay-invention is to utilize a truss as a means for the preservation of money and other valuables from thieves and pickpockets; to which. end my improvement consists in constructing a truss with a receptacle for suchvaluables.V
The next part of my invention relates to a truss of that class in which a pad is combined with a strap encircling the body. Its object is to adapt the pad for application to either side of the body, or to persons of dii'erent size.
The subject-matter claimed will be specifically designated hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. y1 is a view-of the truss when applied to the person; Fig. 2, a perspective view ot" the ',pad; and Fig. 3 a view ofthe same when opened.
The pad is composed of two sections, A A', connected by a hinge, a., and adapted to be opened and closed, and held closed, in the manner of an ordinary tobacco-box, or in some other suitable Well-known way. The surface or face of the pad to be placed next to the ruptured part is preferablyI of an oval form, but will be constructed to suit differing formations of the body at the place where the rup ture is located, as usual. p
The opposite face of the pad is preferably dat, to allowthe clothing of the wearer to lie smoothly thereon, and is provided with a loop or eye for the passage of the strap, which loop consists of a bar, al, and a central knob or button, a2, mounted thereon. In the drawings this eye or loop `is shown as formed by two parallel slots in the wall of the pad, but in practice I prefer to use an arched bar, upon which the' button a? is mounted, so as to dispense with slotting the Wall of the pad, as by `avoiding such perforations the pad is kept `tight.' v
rIlhe pad is secured to the person of the j wearer by a strap, B,'which is provided at one` end with an adjustable hook-buckle, C, and with a` slit or button-hole, C', at its opposite end, the strap being passed through the loop of the pad, which allows it to be adjusted on the strap to suit persons ofdiiIerent size.
To apply the truss, place .the pad on the ruptured part; then pass the slitted end of the strap around the leg, and button it to the button a2; then pass the free end of the strap provided with the buckle around the body and slip the hook thereof over the button, as shown in Fig. l.
a It .will be seen that a truss constructed according to myinvention presents not only a safe receptacle for valuables placed vin the pad, but is easily adapted -to either side of the person, and which permits of the free movement of the body Without liability of the pad slipping from its'place. Its cheapness and simplicity of construction will also recommend its adoption and use.
I claim as my invention- 1. A trusspad composed of interlockingsections hinged togetherfco form a safe' recepadaptable to either side of the body, or to per` sons of different size, and one button fastens both ends of the strap.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
i PHILIP WEEUM.
Witnesses: `A. HAMILTON, VJ. J. FULLER.
