UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ BAUR AND ANDREAS GROM, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-OASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,531, dated December 25, 1877; application filed July 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that we, FRANZ BAUR and AN- DREAS GROM, of the city of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gases; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view when closed up. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the casket having the doors opened to view the dead. Fig. 3 is a section, as w, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a section, yy, of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to the construction of burial-cases; and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The case is in two partsa permanent burialcasket and a removable top. The bottom or permanent burial-casket consists of the outer casing A, which may be finished to taste, and the inner shell B, which is attached to and supported on the bottom of easing A by the longitudinal partition a, leaving an opening between the side edges, as shown.
The top or cover consists, also, of two parts the glass-paneled semi-cylindrical cover 0 in one piece, and having the semicircular head and foot D D, and the circular sliding doors E E--the Whole upper part being attached by the flange I) to the casing A, by means of screws or other usual fastenings. The head and foot D D are made with circular grooves on their inner faces, as also the ends of casing A, to guide the revolving covers and facilitate their movement. The doors may be provided with lock and key, or anyother means of attachment.
By this construction averyhandsome burialcase may be produced; and ornamentation may be indulged in to any extent by paneling, inlaying, veneering, molding, or in any other manner.
The whole top being removable, after the corpse has been inserted and the cover firmly applied, the whole length of the deceased may be viewed, without any possibility of the escape of the noxious gases of decomposition, by simply unfastening the revolving covers and permitting them to slide down into the space between the shell B and easing A.
We are aware that patents have been granted for coffins with revolving covers, particularly Patents No. 98,730, to W. G. Algeo, and No. 139,465, to Henika and Carder; but We do not claim as our invention anything embraced in said patents, our invention being to the specific construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter claimed.
What we claim as new is- The improved burial-casket, consisting of the outer casing A, the circular inner case B, having its upper half of glass or glass-paneled, head and foot D D, having the described circular grooves in their inner faces, connectingflange b, and the two qnadrantal revolving covers E E, said covers revolving around the same common axis, guided by the grooved head and foot, and having their parting-line at the top, all combined, constructed, and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereto set our hands this 14th day of July, A. D. 1877.
FRANZ BAUR. ANDREAS GROM.
