DISPENSER FOR PAPER DRINKING CUPS File d Nov. 15, 1928 a. flaw ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 29, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BERTI-IOLD .TAHN AND ERNEST EMIL KAI-IE, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, AS- SIGNORS TO THE B. J'AHN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CON- NECTICUT, A CORPORATION DISPENSER FOR PAPER DRINKING CUPS Application filed November 15, 1928. Serial No. 319,621..
Our invention relates to improvements in dispensers for paper drinking cups, of fiat form, being related in the features that pertain to the delivery of the cups to such as are shown and described in Patent No. 1,226, 772, issued May 22, 1917 to Berthold Jahn, one of the present joint applicants, and the object of our present improvement is to overcome by an extension at the lower end portion of the structure the relatively sharp V-shaped corner that is exposed at the lower end and front of the previous structure and at the same time incorporating in the improved structure features pertaining to details of the parts that tend to enhance the convenience and the efliciency.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved dispenser for paper drinking cups.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, with the cover open.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Figure 4 is a sectional View of the lower portion on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a view of the bottom of the cup chamber.
Figure 6 is a side view of bottom end structure and the finger guide supported thereby.
Figure 7 is a front elevation of the same.
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Our improved dispenser for paper drinking cups comprises an upper chamber 10 that corresponds in the operative features and some of the construction details to the structure that is shown and described in the patent above referred to, and which serves as the dispenser proper.
Said chamber 10 comprises an inclined bottom 11 that at the front end is spaced below a lip 12 that is provided at the lower edge of the opposed portion 13 of the front wall and the space 14 between these parts serves as the delivery slot for the paper cups. Thus the top and bottom border walls for the delivery slot 14 meet in a manner to form effectively a relatively sharp V-shape or corner that is exposed in that it is spaced from the supporting wall to which it is secured by its back 15 by the thickness of the dispenser structure.
We find it desirable to provide protection against injury due to feature mentioned and the manner of so doing in the present instance is to incorporate with the structure of the dispenser proper 10 at the lower end a guard chamber or shielding chamber 16 and which is virtually an extension of the chamber structure. As to the frontcorner 17 the adjacent portion 18 of the front wall and the bottom 19 are merged as one piece of sheet metal with the corner structure so that said corner can be and is made of rounded form and with a relatively large radius.
As to the back wall 20 and the side walls 21', these extend continuously from top to bottom, and these parts are made integral from one piece of sheet metal.
The bottom 11 of the dispenser chamber 10' bridges the interior structure.
Said dispenser bottom 11 supports the paper cups that are to be delivered, and these cups are usually superimposed by a weight. A finger notch 22 that opens across the bot-. tom edge 23 is provided for facilitating the delivery.
Just above the upper border wall or lip 12 of the delivery slot 14 is provided a sight opening 24 for the exposure of a plurality of the paper cups that are housed in the interior. In the present structure said sight opening is in the form of a closed slot that is spaced from said lip 12. Thus the lip 12 is continuous and unbroken in its extent laterally over'the upper side of the delivery slot 14.
The lip 12 is turned outwardly relatively to the adjacent supporting portion 18 of the front wall. Below said lip 12 is the space for the delivery slot 14 and also such additional space as may be needed to provide for housing and supporting the-front edge portion 25 of the dispenser bottom 11 and which serves as a lower lip for the delivery opening 14. That is to say, the dispenser bottom 11 is projected through the slotted front wall portion 18 and rests'upon the top edge 26 of the opening that is provided. Said top edge 26 coincides substantially with the top front edge of the rounded bottom corner structure 17 and said edge is interrupted at the middle by a finger recess 27 that is virtually in registration with the finger notch 22 and that serves to permit of access thereto.
Thus the dispenser chamber 10 and its associated parts permit of use in substantially the same manner as the dispenser shown and described in the patent mentioned and also provision is made for shielding and guarding the bottom front corner.
We find it desirable, however, to further facilitate the use of the dispenser by providing a guide 28 for the fingers directing from the recess 27 generally towards the notch 22.
Said guide is in the form of a trough-like structure, adapted to provide a channel with rounded bottom, and is made of a single piece of sheet metal. The support therefor is provided at the front end by means of a turned edge or flange 29 that is exposed at the front and borders the edge 30 of the recess 27.
The cover 31 is a right-angled structure as in the previous structure, covering the upper part of the front wall and the top,
1 and is supported by means of a hinge 32 at the bottomedge of the front Wall portion.
- We claim as our invention 1. In a cup dispenser, a box-like enclosing structure having a bottom Wall, a partition wall above said bottom Wall for supporting cups, said dispenser being providedwith a delivery slot above the front edge of said partition wall, the front edge of said partition Wall being notched to admit the finger, the portion of the front wall below said edge being provided with an opening registering with said notch.
2. In a cup dispenser as described in claim 1, the corner of said enclosing structure below said slot being of rounded form.
3. In a cup dispenser as described in claim 1, a trough-like or channel member serving to enclose the sides and bottom of a passage extending from said finger recess to the under side of said notched edge.
