Description

Oct. 29, 1929. F, A, BALLOU 1,733,112
COLLAR HOLDER Filed Feb- 23, 1929 BY JWM A TTORNE YS.
Patented Oct. 29, 1929 ,UNIT-D STATES PATENT :oel-*ICE FREDERICK A. BALLOU, oF NAYA'IT, RHODE isLANn, lAssIcfNoR 'Io B. A. BALLOU en Co.,
INc.,'oF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A coBronATIoNfoF RHODE ISLAND COLLAR vIfIoLDER This invention relates to a collar holder; and has for its object to provide a collar holder having jaws depending upon the inherent resiliency of the stock for forcing them into gripping position with the same so constructed as to allow the edge of the collar to be easily inserted between the jaws and yet firmly grip the collar when so inserted.
The invention further consists in the twisting of one of each pair of jaws of the holder to provide an entering space for the insertion of the collar into the jaw and at the saine time provide a construction by which the j aw lnember may be easily moved against its inherent resiliency by the insertion of the edge of the collar into position between the jaws.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a neat appearance of collar holder of such a construction that the looped or coiled end of the jaw will be visible when the device is in collar attaching position.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out inthe appended claims.
111 the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a collar holder of my improved construction.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with the body portion in section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the body portion with the wire jaws removed.
Fig. 1 is a section on line t-fl of Fig. 2.v
A fashion or fad has arisen in the use of collar holding devices, whereby it has become popular to use a device having a safety pin appearance for holdingr the two spaced edges of the collar fromspreading. safety `pin construction have been used to supply this fashion but as they cause a piercing of the collar they have been superseded by holders which have a pair of jaws to engage the collar on either side without pierc ing the same and in order that the holding device may have the appearance of a safety pin construction it has been customary to form 'the same out of wire, rolling or folding the ends into loop form to have the ap- Pins of the pearance of the loop which appearsin the safety pin. Ithas been customary, however,
to the surface of the collar gripped,in which position, it is found difficult toinsert the collar between the jaws of the device. Further by disposing theaws or loops at right angles to the surfaceof the collar, `tne coiled eifect of the ends does not `showfand in order to avoid bot-h of these undesirable effects, I have twisted or positioned the looped end'of the jaw in a position at an acute anglepreferably 45, to the surface of the collar when engaged andto the surface ofthe sheetmetal 4base portion ofthe device by which construction the collar may be more readily inserted Abetween the jaws and yet thedesired loop ap` ypearance of the device may be always'visible in imitation of the safety typeof construction; andthe following is a detailed description` of theI present embodiment of this in- `vention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished: e v,
. lVith reference to thefdrawings, 10.-desig lia-tes the `base or body portion of the device, which is .formed'of sheet metal cut out into the desired shape` androughened as at 11 at portions spaced from each end thereof. Openings 12 are pierced adjacent the middle of the devicethru which aiwire 13 iswoven having la .portion between the. openings 12 disposed over the lrear surface of the body and extending thru' these openings yat a sharp angle thereto andthence over the surface 14 of the bodyportion to be rolled int-o loops l5 at either end thereof. 'i
Each of the loops 15 has a portion' 16to.
engage the collar to be gripped, which pore tion is located to contact'with the roughened portion 11 when thedeviceis disposedlin a plane inclined` to the `surface 14: of the body portion` andy also to thesurface .of the collar which may extendbetween the jaws 16 and the roughened'portion 11 tosfor'nr therewith an acute angle of substantially 459 Vas will be apparent from Fig. 4.
,By inclining the. loopg 15, j aslyshowng, its
fil
rotating action of the jaw is permitted. InV
this way a double yield in an upward direction as well as a rotary direction is aforded which enables the device to operate with much less effort and yet lirmly gripthe collarwhen inserted thereinto.
It will be further apparent that the inclined loop as viewed from Fig. 4, also serves as a guide to direct the collar to the point of nip between it and the base portion to additionally assistv in the insertion of the collar into position.
The foregoing description isdirected solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to whichthe device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A collar holder comprising a body portion for engagement wit-h the under side of a collar, a clamping jaw mounted thereon for resilient movement towards and from said body portion for engagement with the upper side of the collar, said jaw rolled to gen- 'plane to make an acute angle with the surface of the collar gripped between it and the body portion.
2. A collar holder comprising a body portion for engagement with the under side of a collar, a clamping jaw mounted thereon or resilient movement towards andl from said body portion for engagement with the upper `sideof the collar, said ]aw rolled to generally form a collar engaging loop at its end, said loop being positioned generally to lie in a plane at substantially 45 to the surface of the collarV gripped between it and the body por-` tion.
. 3. A collar holder comprising a sheet metal body, a wire secured at its center to said body .with itsk ends rolled to form'loopsy and serve FREDERICK A. BALLOU;
