This invention relates to improvements in anti-theft containers adapted to be so placed with regard to a door, or other vertical closure, that a bolt projecting from the con- 5 tainer bears against the door when the lat ter is in closed position and prevents a latch from being disengaged from the bolt until the door is opened and the bolt moved longitudinally out of engagement from the latch.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide an anti-theft container wherein the bolt is automatically moved out of engagement from the latch and the latter released as soon as the door is opened; and wherein the container cover automatically rises as soon as the latch is released and tends to remain in pan tially opened position.

A further object of the invention is to provide an anti-theft container which may be placed either in front, or to the side, of a door and which is simply and cheaply constructed and is eficient in operation.

With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the specification proceeds, the invention is hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the invention in position adjacent to a door.

Figures 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2-2 and 33 of Figure 1..

Figure 1 is a view similar to Figure 3 except that the cover is partly open and the bolt in released position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary door frame having a conventional door 2 mounted therein on hinges 3. The container 4 is usually placed to one side of the doorway so as not to impede the progress of people wishing to pass through.

Within the container 7 and secured to one side thereof is a bearing 5, and through the back of the container is an opening 6. A bolt 4 is supported towards its inner end by the bearing 5 and projects rearwardly through so the opening 6. Behind the container the bolt is usually oifset as indicated at 4 so that its outer end will rest against the door when the latter is closed. Around the bolt within the container a washer 8 is placed between which and the bearing 5 a spring 9 extends. The washer is prevented from moving more than a given distance from tl e hearing by a cotter pin 10. This spring arrangement tends to move the bolt rearwardly as soon as the door is opened.

The cover 11 of the container is mounted on hinges 12, and on the side of the container to which the hinges are fastened is a socket 13 having a helical spring 14 therein. This helical spring bears against the underside of the cover and tends to hold the latter partly open. On the underside of the cover is a r epending bracket 15 having a catch 16 pivotally mounted thereon at 15. This catch has a recess 17 therein which, when the cover is closed and the bolt in the position shown in Figure 3 engages the latter. In order to keep the catch in engagement with the belt a coil spring 18 is connected to the catch above its pivotal point and also to the cover.

From the foregoing it is believed that the operation of the device will be readily understood. Briefly it is as follows: As long as the door remains shut the spring 9 remains compressed and the inner end of the bolt extends under the catch 16. Meanwhile though the cover 11 is held against accidental closing by the helical spring 14 it normally remains sutficiently closed to shield the interior of the container to a very large extent from falling rain or snow. As the cover is being closed the tapered underside 1h of the catch strikes the bolt and causes the former to swing about its pivotal point 15 sufficiently to pass the bolt; the coil spring 18 theii swings the catch back so that the recess 1'? comes into engagement with the side of the bolt. As soon as the door 2 is opened the spring 9 moves the bolt longitudinally until it is clear of the catch and then the helical spring 14: raises the cover 11. In this manner the catch is automatically released and the cover automatically opened each time the door is opened, and each time the door is shut the device is re-set so that by closing the cover it remains held closed until the door is opened again.

While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

that I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An anti-theft device suitable for being fixedly positioned adjacent a movable door comprising a container having an opening through one of its sides, a bearing mounted in said container, a bolt supported in said bearing, projecting through said opening, and having its outer end adapted to bear against a door when the latter is closed, a cover hinged on said container, a depending catch on said cover having a recess therein adapted to engage said bolt, and means tending to move said bolt longitudinally out of engagement from said catch when said door is opened.

An antitheit device suitable for being fixedly positioned adjacent a movable door comprising a container having an opening through one of its sides, a bearing mounted therein, a bolt supported in said bearing, projecting through said opening, and having its outer end adapted to bear against a door when the latter is closed, a cover hinged on said container, a depending catch on said cover having a recess therein adapted to e11- gage said bolt, a Washer around said bolt within the container, a spring around said bolt extending from said bearing to said washer, and a cotter pin through said bolt against which said Washer is held by the tension of said spring so that the latter is adapted to move said bolt longitudinally out of engagement from said catch when the door is opened.

An anti-theft device of the type in which a fixedly positioned container is normally held locked by the action of a closed door and is opened upon opening of said door adjacent to which the container is positioned, including in the locking mechanism a bolt longi tudinally guided through a Wall ofthe coirtaiiner, means for urging one end of the bolt in direction toward the door in front of which the container is positioned, a cover for the container and a spring controlled, pivoted catch on said cover provided with a recess adapted to seat said bolt when the cover is closed.

6. An anti-theft device of the type in which a container is placed adjacent a door to be maintained locked as long as the dooris closed and adapted to be unlocked upon open ing of the door, comprising in combination a bolt longitudinally guided through a wall of said container and adapted to be actuated by movement of the door to closing position in one direction, including means on the belt for imparting a movement to the same in the opposite direction, a cover hinged to the container, a spring controlled catch on said cover having a recess through which said bolt is guided for holding the cover in closed position and means for moving said cover to open position and maintaining said cover in open position upon withdrawal of said bolt from said notch.
