MARTIN COMBINATION SINGLE AND DOUBLE BED Filed May 5, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 lNVENTdR BY Jose A Martin M Patented Get. 22, 1929 STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH MARTIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR- TO UNITED STATES CABINET BED 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK COMBINATION SINGLE AND DOUBLE BED Application filed May 5, 1927. Serial No. 189,026.
This invention relates to combination single and double beds more generally known as couch beds.
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide an improved combination single and double bed having a main bed section and an extension bed section in which the single bed formation has a sleeping level substantially at the same level with the sleeping level of the double bed formation and in which, in addition, a compartment for bed clothes is provided between the two bed sections when in single bed formation so that the combination can also be used as a couch when desired.
Epeciiically, the invention aims to provide an improved combination single and double bed as aforesaid in which the mechanism for controlling the main and extension bed sections in their movement relative to one another dispenses entirely with any pin and slot connections, and in which the main bed section is always positively controlled in its up and down movements and in its positions of rest.
The present invention further contemplates an improved mechanism for controlling the collapsible leg members of the extension section of a combination single and double bed. Epecificially, the invention residing in this improved control mechanism also comprehends dispensing with all pin and slot connections and further comprehends so guiding the collapsible leg members thatthey will freely clear the main frame and main bed section when the extension bed section is moved into and out of extension position.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of specific embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of one embodiment showing the bed sections in single bed or couch formation;
Fig. 2 is a similar end elevation of the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 but in double bed formation;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking at the rear side of the near frame portion illustrated in Fig. 1 with the springs removed;
Fig. 4: is a fragmental plan view partly in section with the springs removed of the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a fragmental section on theline 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a perspective fragmental view of a portion of the control mechanism;
Fig. 7 is an end elevation similar to Fig. 1 of a modification with the spiral springs re moved and showing the sections in single bed formation Fig. 8 is an end elevation ofthe modification illustrated in Fig. 7 in double bed formation.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, there is provided a main frame A having two end frame members each provided with a pair of end posts 1 and 1 which are connected to one another by the lower cross bars 3 and the intermediate cross bars 2. The alined end posts 1 of the end frame members are connected by the side rail 4. and the alined end posts 1 of the end frame members are connected by the side rail 4.
To the intermediate cross bars 2 there are connected two bed sections, a main bedsection B and an extension bed section G. In single bed formation, the main bed section B assumes a descended position relative to the main frame A, and the extension bed sectionC is disposed above the main bed section B and at the sleeping level, and in double bed formation, the main bed section B assumes a raised position that, which is occupied by the extension bed section in single bed formation, and the extension bed section is swung to one side and supported at the sleeping level in order to be in alinement with the main bed section when raised.
The main bed section B is composed of end bars 5 which are connected to one another at their ends by means of the side bars 6. The main bed section preferably supports a wire framework 7 by means of the spiral springs 8 connected thereto in the usual way.
Similarly, the extension bed section is composed of end bars 9 which are connected to one another at their ends by means of the.
side bars 10, and the extension bed section is also provided with a wire framework 11 supported by means of the spiral springs 12- connected thereto in the usual way.
For simultaneously raising the main bed section B "when the extension bed section C is swung into double bed formation, and similarly for simultaneously depressing the main bedlsection B when the extension bed section C is swung into single bed formation, the connections now to be described are provid-- ed. These connections essentially consist of two pairs of elongated bent levers 13, 13', two pairs of links 14, 14 and two control links 15. The bent levers 13, 13 operate in pairs, each pair being pivotally connected at its bent portions to one of the side bars 2, and having the ends of its long arms pivotally connected "to one of the end bars 9, and havthe ends of its short arms pivotally connected'to the lower ends of one of the pairs of links 14, 14, the upper ends of each pair of links 14, 14 being connected to one of the endbars 5. Each of the control links 15 is preferably connected at one end to the end of the cross bar 2 connected to the post 1, and has its other end connected to the end of the crossbar 5 adjacent to the post 1. By so connecting the control link 15, the up and down movement of the main bed section B with the lateral movement of theextension bed sectionC is insured, and at the same time the main bed section B slightly moved toward the posts 1, and thereby toward the extension bed section C When in raised position, to locate the adjacent longitudinal edges of the 7 bed sections close to one another when in double bed formation.
F or'facilitating the opening and closing of the bed into single or double bed formation,'two pairs of compensating springs 16, 16 are provided, one pair for each group of connections. The inner ends of each pair of springs16, 16 are connected to the pin 17 on the long arm of onev of the bent levers 13 near its adjacent side bar 2. The outer end of each of the springs 16 is connected to one of the short links 18, pivotally connected to the upper end of one of the posts 1, and the Outer end of each of the springs 16 is connected toone of theshort-links 19,pivotally connectedto the upper end of one of the .posts 1'.
- Each extension bed section C is provided with a pair of collapsible legs 20. Each of these legs is pivotally connected to the outside of' one of, the bars 9 near its outer end, and has pivotally connected thereto a link 21 which in turn is pivotally connected to a lever 22 also pivotally connected to the side bar 9, which lever 22 in turn is pivotally connected to a second link 23 which is pivotally connected to one of the levers 13 near the connection of such lever with the side e bar 9.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the pairs of bent levers and links are substantially identical in position and relation. Here, however, the control links designated 24 extend in the opposite direction to the direction of the control links 15. Each of the control links 24 here has one end pivotally connected to one of the side bars 2 adjacent to the post 1, and has its end pivotally connected to one of the side bars 5 and preferably where the link 14 is pivotally connected to the side bar 5.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of. construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
