This invention relates to combination single and doubleconch beds such as illustrated in my copcnding application Ser. No. 189,026 filed May 5, 1927. l
7 Among the objectsof the present invention it is aimed to provide an improved combination single and double couch bed whereby. the
extent of vertical movement of the main bedsection is suficient to provide an extended or enlarged compartment for bed clothes or the like when the couch bed is in single bed formation. H

In the embodiment illustrated the main frame is illustrated as consisting of corner standards 1-2 at both ends of the same which are connected to one another by the endbars 3 and 4c and by the side bars5 and 6.

The main frame C is provided with two cross bars 3 one at each end, and each of these cross bars has pivotally connected thereto a pair of bent levers 7 and 8. The levers 7 and 5 8 of each pair are substantially identical having short arms 9 and'lO and long arms 11 and 12 respectively. Thelevers 7 and 8, are pivotally connected totherail 3 at the intersection of the armsto wit at the points 13 and 14:. The points 13 andlt arespaced from one another and from the standard 2 a short dlstance. The free ends of the lovers? and l 8 are pivotally connected to the. cross bar 15 of the bed sectionB at the points 16 and 17 which are spaced from one another a distance equa'l to the distance between the points 13. and Thefree ends of the arms 9 and 10' are pivotally'connected to the short links 18 and 19 respectively which are ipivotally con nected to the cross bar 20 of the bed section A at the points 21 and 22. The pivot points 21 and 22 are spacedfrom one another a distance equal to the distance betweenthe pivot points 13 and 14. Since both ends of the bed are similar, to facilitate description but one end th'e near end, illustrated, will be described,it being understood that both ends of the bed are substantially identical.
As shown the levers 7 and 8 are preferably pivoted" to the inner face of the rail 3, the arms 9 and 10 are pivoted to the outer face of the links 18 and 19, and the links 18 and 19 are pivoted to the outer face of the end bar 20. The arms 9 andl O are bent inwardly at l 23 and 24:, see particularlyFig. 4 to afford clearance for the control lever 25 which has the right hand end pivoted to the inner face of the corner standard 2, andits left hand end pivoted to theonter face of the rail 20. The control lever 25 is bent outwardly at 26, see particularly Fig. 4:, to cooperate with the bends 23 and 24 to afiord clearance, for the control lever 25. The control lever 25 is also downwardly bent at 27 to cooperate with the I bends 26, 23 and 24 to afford clearance for the control lever 25. To facilitate the operation of the bed sections into single and double bed formation, springs are provided in the usual way to wit thejsprings 28 and 29, the spring 28 being pivotally' connected to the link 30 which is pivotally connected tothe outer [face of the corner standard 1. right hand endvof the spring 28is connected to the pin 31 extending outwardly from the lever 7. The left handendof the spring 29 is connected to the pin 31and is connected at its right handend to the linlr32extending from the outer face of the rail 3. f
To facilitate the operation of both ends of the bed simnltaneously, the free ends of the arms 11, see particularly Figs. 3 and l.

With the present improvement the links 18 v and 19 are considerablyshorter than the arms Sand 10 of the levers 7 and 8 and bytheir coi operation with the control lever 25 it is pos-v si'bletodepressthe bed section A as low as possible preferably to a point a'little above the floor so that a maximum extent of moves .mentof thebed section A may beeffected Furthermore with the right hand end of the control lever pivoted midway between the lowestand highest positions of'the bed section A, the are of movement of the left hand end of the lever 25,,and therefore of the bed section A will be but slight, and thus confine the bedsection A to a minimumamountof lateral movement;
I The pivoted points connecting the arms 9 and lOwith the links 18 and 19, to wit the pivot pins 36 and 37 have inwardly extending projections 38 and 39 which form stops to engage the lower face of the end rail 20 to limit the downward movement of the bed section A, and on the other hand to prevent the links 18 and 19 bending down below an imaginary dead center whereit would be impossible to raise the bed section A, bythe mere manipulation of the bed section B.
The pivot points 21 and 22, see particularly Figs. 2 and 6 are provided with outwardly extending lugs 40 and 41. The lugs 40- and '41, see particularly F ig.'2 cooperate with the arms 9 and lOto preventthe arms 9 and 10 swinging across the pivot points 21 and 22, when the bed. section A is being swung upwardly and thus prevent the links 18 and 19 causing ajamming action with the main con trol lever 25. and the arms 9 and 10.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications'may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forthin the appended claims.

The combination with a frame, of a main bed section movable in an up and down direction,an'extension bed section, a control mechanism at each end of said frame for. simultaneously operating said bed sections, each control mechanism comprising a pair of bent levers and a pair of links, the bent levers being pivotally connected to said frame and having short and long arms, the ends of the v long arms being pivotally connected to said extension bed section,-the links connecting the main bed section withthe short arms of said bent levers, ineans for, controlling the main bed section in its up and down movementrelative to said frame, and stops on said links cooperating wlth said mam bed section to limit its downward movement.
