Vihis invention relates to display boxes of Y that class in which the box, in order to advertise its contents, is provided with an adver- Ysing or display. card which is `turned up wards into an erect position at one end of the bex. The object of the invention is to provide a novel means for` holding'the -display card erect or in display position which shall be simple, cheap, elicient, 'and 'not detract Afrom the appearance of the box.

For a full understanding of the invention, constructions embodying the invention in preferred forms will now vbe described in detail in connection with the accompanying draw-l r ings, and the features forming the invention Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention in a preferred form with the display card broken away;

In accordance with the present invention,

the display card A is'held erect by lateral pressure on the display card. For this purpose, the lower end of the display card, which is mounted within the box body, is made wider than the box body so that the side panels of the box bodyv coacting therewith squeeze the display card laterally. In the construction shown in Figs. '1 to 3, the lower portion of the display card blank fits within the box, andis slit centrally to provide a free portion a, 'which is wider than the inside of the box. The pressure of the side of the box body upon the portion a tends to bulge the display card or portion a and preduces a toggleflike action upon the center of the display card A as the latter is bent upward and backward lon the line 2 into display position, and as it is folded downward on the same line, so as to hold the card erect in display position and flat in closed position.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the display card A andthe easel are formed ina single blank, as shown in Figures l to 3 of my Letters Patent No. 1,505,545,with the side wings b, c, folded in and interlocked on the base ai to form the easel, and secured .to the box between the end layers with tab e resting on the top of the box. In this oonstruetion the display card A is provided pref- Y erably with two cut-out portions f extending beyond the outside edges thereof so as to be put under lateral pressure by the sides of the box, and thus produce the toggle-like Vaction of the construction of Figures l to 3,

on each side of the display card, to hold the v*same erect'in display position and flat when folded down.

t will be understood that the invention is not limited to combination with an easel for raising the box end, although it is preferably thus used. The form of easel shown, also, is only for purpose of illustration of the invention and any :other suitable support for raising the box end may be used.

yThe invention, moreover, is not to be -limited to the specific forms shown and described for securing the lateral pressure on the display card, as many modifications may be made within the invention as defined by the claims.

What I claim is:

f1. The combination with a box, of a display card having its lower portion extending into the box and edgewise between the walls `of the box, andits upper portion constructed to be bent down within the box when closed andbent upward into erect position above the box for display, the lower portion of said display card within the box being wider than the box body and edgewise under lateral pressure by the box walls, whereby the display card is held erect when bent into display position. y

2. The combination with a box, of a display card having its lower end extending into the box and formed to provide two or more sections laterally of the display card, said sectioned portion of the display card being of such width as to be held under lateral pressure applied on the side edges thereof by the box walls to hold the display card erect when bent into display position. v

3. The combination with a box, of a display card having itsy lower end extending into the box and scored so that the display portion may be bent down within the box when closed and formed to provide two or more sections laterally of its lower end, said sectioned portion of the display card being of such width as to be held under lateral `pressure applied on the side edges thereof. by the box walls to hold the display card erect when bent into display position. l

The combination with abox, of a display card having its lower end extending into the box and scored so that the display portion may be bent down wit-hin the box when'elosed and formed to provide two sections laterally of its lowerfend, said sectioned portion of the display card being of Vsuch width as to be held underl lateral .pressure applied onthe. side edges thereof by the box walls to hold the display card erect when bent into display position.

5. A ,displaycard device, comprising a norinally flat display card of flexible material and a distortable support to which, one edge ofthe display card is hingedly connected, said support having two portions displaceable toward each other and adapted to be maintained in displaced positions transmitting forces to the display card through the hinge connection, whereby said card 4is flexed or distorted out of a trueplane for the purpose set forth.

. 6. A display card device lfor use with merchandise display boxes comprising a flexible blank having two portions hingedly connected together, one portion comprising a display card and the second portion; comprising a support therefor, the/support flaring outwardly edgewise vaway from the hinge line and beingy slotted intermediate its Ylateral edges along a line substantially at right angles to the hinge line.

7. A display card device for use with merchandise display boxes, comprising a flexible blank having a display cportion .and a supporting portion hinged connectedly together, the base of th; supporting portion being greater in dimension than themeasurement along the hinge line, the purpose being to producea distortior: in the body of the show 'card for the purposes set forth by squeezing the supporting portion until the length of the base of the supporting portion is equal to or approximately the length of the hinge line, the base being slotted from the edge thereof to the hinge line to allow the portions of the contracted base to overlap.

8. A display card device chandise display boxes, comprising a flexible Ablank having two portions hingedly connected together, one of said portions being slotted, the slot extending from one edge approximately to the hinge, substantially dividing said slotted portion into two parts, and

permitting said parts to be moved toward each other to buckle the unslotted portion.

9. Ad-isplay card device for use with merchandise display boxes, comprising a flexible blank having two portions hingedly connected together, one of said portions being slotted, .the slot .extending from one edge approximately to the mid point of the hinge, `substantially dividingl said slotted portion into two approximately equal parts, and permitting said parts to be displaced toward each other to buckle the unslotted portion.

A display card device lfor use with merchandise display boxes, comprising a flexible blank having two portions hingedly con-` nected together, one ofsaid portions being Islot-ted, the slot extending from one edge to an intermediate point of the hinge and perpen- `dicular to the hinge line, Adividing theslotted pOrtion into two displaceable parts, and permittingsaid parts to be displaced toward each other tofbuckle the unslotted portion. ll. A .display card device comprising a flexible display card and a deformablesupporting portionlhingedly connected together, one of said portions being` slotted, substantiallydividing said portion into two parts movable toward each other by distorting the other portion, Xsaid parts being displaced towardfeach other, whereby said slot-ted portion is contracted in va directiony parallel to the hinge line, for the purpose set forth.
