This invention relates to type printing accessories, and has particular reference to an improvement in a type clampingattachment for a chase which is applicableto chases of either the inside or outside forms.

Up to the present time, the type on the inside chases have been locked up from the ends by the usual quoins and from the sides by screws directly threaded through one of the side rails for engaging a bearing strip, while in the outside chases quoins are employed to lock up the type fromone end and from one side. Obviously, these methods of locking the type in the chase subject the side rails .15 especially to localized strains and pressures which tend to buckle, warp or otherwise distort the chase to such an extent that after a very limited time, the same is rendered unlit for further use and must be discarded.

In order to overcome the above recited objections and disadvantages, the present invention broadly comprehends means applicable to the side of a chase for relieving the side rail of strains, stresses or other pressures thereon incident to the locking of the type in the chase whereby distortion of the chase is precluded and the strains and stresses are transmitted directly to the means employed so that said means may be economically re- .30 placed when necessary. 13 and 1 1. The side 1 rail 13 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 15. A bar 16 is detachably associated with the side rail 13 by any suitable means, such as headed screws 17, the threaded shanks of which extend through slots 18 in the bar 16 and are an chored in threaded apertures 19 in the chase. The screws may be of the usual type in which the heads are provided with non-circular so sockets 20 for the reception of wrenches for V manipulating the same. The bar 16 is'provided with threaded apertures 21 longitudinallyv spaced to approximately coincide with the apertures-15 in the side rail 13 of the chase. Screws 22 engage through the threaded apertures 21 and are designed to looselyextend through the apertures 15 in the side rail 13 of the chase for engagement or impingement of their inner ends against a bearing strip 23 disposed alongside of the composed type A and arranged within the chase and locked up from the end by the usual furnitureB and quoins C. It thus follows that the strain of clamping or looking up the composed type from the side of the .chase is transmitted directly to the bar 16 without affecting inanyway the side rail '13. of the chase. When the chase with the type is deposited onto. the bed of the press, the

intermediate chases may have the bars removed therefrom by unscrewing the screws 17. It is obvious that the endmost chases may be locked up on the bed of the press without removing the bar 16 therefrom. YVhen the bar 16 has been warped or dis torted in one direction by its continual use, the same may be placed on the chase in a reverse direction to obtain additional use therefrom. If the bar is broken or distorted to such an extent as to preclude its further use, it may be replaced at small expense. It will thus be seen that a type clamping attachment has been devised which materially increases the length of life and usefulness of a chase, which attachment is economical and efficient in its purpose.

In an outside form of chase, as illustrated in Figure 5, the type clamping attachment is shown as applied thereto for the purpose of relieving the side rail 25 of localized strains due to the locking up of the composition D from the side by the usual quoins E. In this instance, the attachment is of the same construction and functions in the same manner as that described for the inside form of chase, with the exception that the screws 22 are initially threaded inwardly to space the strip 23 from the side rail of the frame a predetermined distance prior to locking up the composition from the opposite side with the quoins E. Obviously, in this form, the bar 16 takes the strain from the clamping action of the quoins E.

What is claimed is:

1. In a type clamping attachment for a chase, means carried by the chase adjacent the side rail which is usually subjected to the warping strains, for relieving the same of said strains, said means comprising a bar attached at its opposite ends to one side of the chase and elements threaded through said barand clampingly engaging the type.
