My invention relates to vacuum tanks, and has for its object to provide a new and eflicent vacuum tank for use in drawing the gasoline from the tank to the carburetor of an automobile. c
A further object is to provide a highly efli cient vacuum tank which will be made of very few working parts, thereby making it economical to construct and quickly assembled with very little time. taken to assemble the tanks.
A still further object is to provide a tank which will be more efficient than hasheretofore been accomplished and one which will continue to operateun-der all conditions of weather, engine conditions and continued pull of the engine so that ythe tank will store suiicient gas in the reserve tank that the engine will never run out of fuel.l y i These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying-drawings, in which similar numerals and' letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this appli-cation and pointedy out in the appended claims.
I n the drawings, in which I have shown the best andrmost preferred manner of building my invention, Figure 1 is a section diametrically through both the suction tank and the reserve tank, with parts shown in elevation. Figure 2 is a section of the suction tank. Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the double valve. Figure 4 is a plan view ofthe valve shifting arms. Figure 5 is a plan view of the main control arm connecting the oatwith the top of the tank.-
In the drawings I have shown the reserve outer tank as A, and thefinner suction tank as B, with a cover G covering both tanks. The said cover C is provided with two spaced apart bosses 1 and V2 thereon, with the said boss 1 centrally bored at 4 to receive a pipe connection from the supply tank of the automobile, and having said bore running through the lentire boss. Partof the said boss 1 isv formed on. the under side of the cover and is. shown as 3,' Figures 1 and 2. The said bore x4, 'through'the boss 1 and 3, is internallythreaded on the top end and the 'lower end is sloped of bearing arms 6 and 7 are formed on the under and outer edge thereof. rIhe said boss 2 is centrally bored and threaded to receive a suction pipe from the intake manifold of the automobile, and a smaller bore 8 is provided, running down into the'member 5, with a transverse bore 9 connecting with said boreA 8 and with a bore 10, which bore 10 is parallel with the bore 8. The upper end of the said bore 1() is formed into a valve seat 11. A centrally bored plug 12 is screwed into the top side of said cover C near'the b oss 2, and the lower end of said plug forms a valve seat 18. A valve stem 14 is provided in a transverse cut 15 in thesaid member 5, and has both ends-16 and 17 tapered and formed into valves with guide stems 18 and 19 formed on the extreme ends thereof. The said stem 18 fits into the said lbore through the said valve seat 18 and the said stem 19 fits into the valve seat 11 so that the stemv14 is kept in alinement with the two spaced apart valve seats 11 and 13 and so that the valves 16 and 17 will at all times be in alinement with their respective seats 13 and 11. A cross bar 2O is provided. through said stem 14, by which said stem and valves-are operated, opening one valve and closing the opposite one. The said valves 11 and 113 are in alinement with each other, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Valve shifting arms 21 and 22 are secured pivotally to the 'p said' member 5 by the pivot pin 28 and have their outer ends spaced apart by the spacer member 24. The said arms 21 and 22a-re alikey and each has a cut 25 in the top side thereof in which the said cross bar 20 is carried and by which it is operated for, as the arms 21 and 22 are moved, the slot moves the bar 20, thereby moving the valves. Between the ends of the arms 6 and 7 a control lever 27 is mounted on the pivot pin 28. The said arm is bifurcated an-d transversely boredA on its outer end to receive the float connection 29, which connects the said control lever 27 with a float F. The said lever 27 lis slotted verticallytherethrough, as at 30, and is transversely bored to receive the pivot pin 31. An arm 32 is carried on the said pin 31 and said arm is bored at 33 to receive one end of a spring 34. From there the arm is formed in the approximate shape of a Figure L, with the oute-r and upper end thereof widened, as at 35, and with the inner face 36 sloping in and the face 37 sloping upward# ly and inwardly. The said faces 36 and 37 are adapted to t against the said spacer 24 by thepressure of the spring 34 which spring holds the faces 36 and 37 against the said spacer at all times, and when the float rises or falls the faces 36 and 37 act upon the spacer 24 and move the arms 21 and 22, thereby actuating the valves. Stop lugs 39 and 4() are provided on the said arms 6 and 7 to limit the movement of the control arm 27.
The bottom end of t-he said suction tank is provided with an .outlet pipe 41, having a bend 42 therein which makes the outlet of the end of the pipe parallel with the end of t-he tank B. The end of the said pipe 41 has a ring groove 43 cut therearound and a cover cap 44 is provided with four spaced apart arms 45, having the ends thereof bent inwardly, adapted to engage with said groove and to hold the cover cap 44 spaced from t-he end of the said pipe 41. A flat, circular piece of metal 4G is provided within the space between the cover cap 44 and the end of the pipe 41 to act as a closure valve therefor. The tank A is provided with the usual outlet control valve Vin the bottom side thereof.
The operation of my invention is as follows The engine of the automobile is rotated and, as the pistons draw the fuel into the gas chamber by the suction created thereby, thesuction in the intake manifold draws the air out of the suction tank B and draws gasoline from'the supply tank through the connection therewith and through the boss 1 into the tank. The gas entering the boss 1 will be thrown against the side of the tank by the slope 0f the hole 4. When the incoming gas has raised the float F to the full position, the control lever arm 27 is raised, which, in turn, raises the arm 32, and the action of the faces 36 and 37 moves the valve shifting arms 21 and 22 by Contact with the spacer 24 and the valve stem 14 is moved downwardly by the action of the face 37 and the intake yvalve 11 is closed and the air intake valve 13 is opened, allowing air to enter the tank B. lVhen air is allowed to enter said tank the gasoline willr flow down throughthe pipe 41 and will press the valve 46 upwardlyv against the cap 44, allowing the gasoline to pass from the tank B into the tank A and from thereI into the engine carburetor as used. l/lhen the gasoline has been drawn from the tank B so that the float F is down., the control arm 27 is drawn down with the float and when the arm 27 is down the `arm 32 passes down over the spacer 34so that the face 36 can flow from the tank C until the suction is,
stopped.V When the tank C is again full to the predetermined level the action of the levers and valve stem reverses the said stem, again closing the suction valve and opening the air valve. This operation is continued as long as gasoline is being used from the tank A and the suction tank C.
I Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1 In a vacuum tank the combination of a reserve tank; a suction tank mounted within said reserve tank; a cover for both of said tanks, having intake and suction connections; an air intake provided in said cover operated by a valve; a valve stem mounted `so that one end. is within the air intake valve' and the other end is within the' suctionA intake connection; valves formed on the ends of said valve stem to open and close said intake valve and said suction connection; Asupport arms formed on the bottom side of said cover; a control lever mounted between said arms; a float carried within said suction tank and 'connected with said control lever; another arm pivoted to said control lever, having lits inner faces at diverging angles to each other; a spring tov control the action of said last mentioned arm; two spaced apart arms,hav
ing slots cut in the upper side thereof, anda spacer between the two outer ends thereof, pivoted on the lower side of said cover, with said spacer adapted to be in constant contact with either of the diverging faces of said arm; a cross bar through said valve stem adapted to fit into the slots insaid spaced apart arms to be actuated by said arms to open and close the intake Suction and air valves as necessary, substantially as described.v

In a vacuum tank the combination of a reserve tank; a suction tank mounted within said reserve tank; a cover for both of said tanks, having intake and suction connections therein; an air inlet in said cover; a valve stem'mounted so that one end thereof is carried in the air inlet and the other end in the suction intake openings; valves formed on the saidstem to control the air intake and the suction intake openings; alever mounted between suitable bearing arms on the under side of said cover; a float carried on the free end of said lever; agspring held arin pivoted to said lever between the float and the lever mounting; an angled face formed on oneside of lsaid, spring held'arm; a roller spacer, carried between two spaced apart slotted arms,
adapted to be actuated by the movement of said angled face when the float raises and lowers in the tank; and a cross bar through said valve stem to lit into said slotted arms to actuate the valves by the movement of the float.
3. ln a vacuum tank the combination of a cover therefor having suitable spaced apart bearing arms on the lower face thereof, and provided with air, suction and gasolene openings therein; a valve stem having the ends 'thereof carried in the air and suction Openings, with the valves formed thereon adapted to close one or the other oit said openings at all times; a lever mounted between said bearing arms having the free end securedto a float; a spring held angled arm pivoted to said lever; two spaced apart slotted arms mounted with a spacer roller between their free ends with said roller adapted to contact with one or the other of the angled faces of said angled arm to actuate the arms by the movement thereof; and a cross bar carried in said valve stem adapted to actuate the stem when the spaced apart arms are actuated.
