To all whom t may concern A Be it known that I, JOHN L. BECK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springeld, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing-Valves, of which the tollowing is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to flushing valves for water closets and analogous apparatuses of a class in which the valve is connected directly with the water supply pipe.
The object of the invention is to provide an efficient and satisfactory valve for the purpose indicated with adequate means for governing o-r controlling the closing action of the valve after such valve shall have been opened so that the duration of the water flow for flushing may be as desired or predetermined.
Another object of the invention is to improve the valve device of the apparatus whereby it is not only operative against the pressure to open easily but in its closing action will be unattended by water hammering, and a further object is to provide constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts which conduce to practicability and comparative che-apness of construction and quickness and convenience of assemblage.

In the governor chamber B which has closing end heads or caps f, f, is a governor" D provided with an aXial stem E which is guided for endwise reciprocatory movement through the upper end head f ot the chamber, a suitable stutling boX or pack'- ing being provided tl'iereat. The governor chamber contains a quantity of liquid such as glycerin or oil in its lower' portion, and the governor or regulator carried at the lower end lof the stem comprises a pistonlike member or disk g' having a comparatively large aperture or apertures vertically therethrough normally covered and closed by a-spring pressed plate or cap g3 having a minute opening g4 therethrough for registry with the larger opening g2. As shown the piston-like disk with the large opening g2 and the valve plate with the minute opening g* and closing spring are duplicated or aiigment/ed etliciency of the device.
F represents the spiral spring beneath and exerting an elevating force on the governor. The extremity of the governor Stem Ewhich extends through and above the upper head of the governor chamber receives pivotal connection therewith of an operating lever E2, its extremity beyond the pivotal connection L being by pivot h2 connected with a link E3' which by pivot h3 is fulcrumed to a luga'L formed as' a part of, or afxed toon upper portion of the governor chamber. The governor stern is formed at an intermediate portion of its length, with a cani G of coinparatively abrupt grade or inclination, the same being upwardly continued in a plane vertical surface z'.
The member e which unites the chambers A and B is formed with a bore jtherethrough whereby it has a tubular formation, the mouth end portion y'2 of such bore, opening into the supply chamber A being flaring; and js represents a strut or uniting member between the members e and c2 which is formed with a passage y leading into the chamber or passage in the member e2, such latter passage having communication with the chamber A below the valve seat opening a.
H represents a rockshaft extending through and having a journal bearing in the aforementioned bore in the part e which unites the supply and governo-r chambers,- said rockshaft having afiixed on its end protruding into the governor chamber a cranklike arm K preferably provided with a. friction roller K2 for impingement against the side of the governor stem either at its portion having the cam surface G or against the plane vertical surface in continuation thereabove, according to the depressed, or the normally elevated posit-ion of the governor stem. The intermediate portion of the rockshaft H which is in line with the aforementioned duct j4 is provided with an annular groove lo and a spiral spring 7a2 is disposed Within a countersunk part of the bore l7' at its junction with the governor chamber, the same. being in compression between the shoulder at the inner end of the countersink and the shoulder formed by the hub-like end of the arm K and effective for forcing the rock-shaft endwise for a tight seating of the tapered portion 7a3 of the rockshaft in the flaring portion of the bore y'. The end of the extremity of the rockshaft which protrudes into the supply chamber above the valve is provided with a crank-like arm L which through a suitable medium of connection or engagement operatively coacts with the valve.
The particular means of connection or engagement between the rockshaft arm and valve here shown and to be next described is one which in practice has been found extremely advantageous and beneficial although it is to be here stated that the invention is not, in its entirety, restricted to this special medium of connection, as other forms of connection of comparative utility may be employed in the situation mentioned. And referring to Figs. Sand 4, it will be seen that opposite the crank like arm L which normally (Fig. 3) is oblique with an upward inclination is a link M fulcrumed at its lower end to the internal lug in the casing by the pivot m, such link being oblique on an inclination approximately the same as that of the arm L. The arm L and link N are by pivots m2 and m3 connected with a horizontally disposed link N.
To the valve a link O is pivotally connected, such link O extending across and upwardly beyond an intermediate portion of the link N, connection at the crossing parts of the links O and N being pivotally made by the cotter pin m4. A spiral spring Q,-nor mally relaxed,-is applied between the upper extremity or arm O2 of the link O and a lug n formed within the upper part of the supply chamber, such lug and the arm O2 being provided with teats 0 for preventing the displacement of the spring.
The arm L instead of being immovably affixed on the end of the rockshaft is engaged thereon, preferably as follows: The hub end portion of the arm L is made with a round aperture therethrough so that while sufficiently closely fitting on the end portion of the rockshaft which is of reduced diameter, it is capable of a rotative movement relative thereto. The rockshaft is provided with a rigid radial stud or projection Q, and the arm L over and adjacent the stud is provided with a laterally extended lug r through which an abutment constituting screw s is adjustably engaged,s2 representing a jam nut for the screw.
The main valve Z which is of annular form is provided with separated depending webs or members t t which support below the valve seat opening a piston-like element u which is of cup-shape having an upwardly opening chamber a2 therein; and this pistonlike and cha mbered member u telescopically plays into an upwardly opening cylindrical chamber or dash pot o formed as a stationary part of the supply chambered casing below the valve seat.
The auxiliary valve a2 has vthe stem w, a portion thereof directly below the auxiliary valve itself being recessed to form a water way through the main valve, such stem having the cross member m so positioned that after the auxiliary valve shall have been raised clear of its seating in the main valve the further motion positively imparted to the auxiliary valve (and to which latter valve the link O is connected) will then upwardly move both valves in unison.
The lower portion 102 of the stem of the auxiliary valve is of cylindrical form for telescopically fitting in the upwardly open` ing cylindrical piston-like appliance u of the main valve; and the fittings of the part w2 in the cylindrical chamber u2 and of the part u in the cylindrical chamber e are not so close or tight as to exclude the entrance of water into, and the expulsion thereof from, the chambers.
For the operation of the device, assuming the parts are in their normal positions shown in Figs. l and 3,-the roller provided extremity of the rockshaft arm K being inwardly swung into the depression in the governor stem formed by the cam surface G, the operating lever E2 will be depressed, correspondingly forcing the governor D from its position shown in Fig. l down to that shown in Fig. 2, the liquid being comparatively freely displaced through the apertures g2, as permitted by the relatively upward movements of the valve plates g3 against the reaction of their comparatively light springs g5. Upon the downward movement of the governor stem, the cam G exerts a crowding action the rockshaft arm K for the swinging of the latter and the oscillation of the rockshaft. The arm L on the end of the rockshaft which is in the supply chamber is thereby moved from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4, causing through the linkages shown and described the elevation especially of the horizontal link N, and through the link O the lifting of firstly the auxiliary valve Z2 and latterly the main valve CZ.. The link N in this action necessarily having an endwise movement to the leftward so that the link O is correspondingly swung in such direction, the spring Q is depressed to establish a reaction for the valve closing, as
r permitted, in a longer or shorter time by the upward return movement of the governor under the force of the elevating spring F. O'n the elevation of the piston-like governor the valve plates g3 will be closed against the tops of the members g having the apertures therein so that the return displacement of the liquid in the governo-r chamber from above to below the governor may only be so fast as the flow is permitted through the minute openings g4 in the valve plates g3.
The spring Q performs the double duty of the valve closing spring and of a means for maintaining the arm K in its cooperative relation to the cam provided governor stem.
lt is to be perceived that on a comparatively considerable swinging movement of the rockshaft arm L the link N which is substantially horizontal and at right angles to the axis of the valve derives a lessened amount of bodily movement on the line of the valve axis so that a sufficiently powerful action for opening the valve is acquired by the parts having considerable oscillatory movement but resulting in a lessened extent of movement of the valve. And in the closing action of the valve, in part by reason of the articulation or linkage of the connections and in part by reason of the double dash. pot provisions wherein the auxiliary valve coacts telescopically with the chamber of the main valve, and the main valve telescopically coacts with the chamber thereof in the casing, the valve closing is effected with absolute positiveness and with an en tire avoidance of water hammering.
I claim 1. In a flushing valve, a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides thereof, a valve for such seat opening, a governor chamber, a governor' in such chamber, a. connection, having a passage therethrough uniting both said chambers, valve operating means controlled by the governor including a rocking member in said connection, and a by-pass leading from the passage of said connection to the aforesaid outlet.
2. vA iiushing valve comprising a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides thereof, a valve for such seat opening, a governor chamber, a governor in such chamber, a connection, having a. passage therethrough uniting the supply chamber, at its inlet portion with the governor chamber, valve-operating means including a rock shaft, extended from the governor chamber to the supply chamber through said passaged connection, and actuated lby the governor, and a by-pass leading from the passage in said connection to the aforesaid outlet. portion of the supply chamber.
3. A flushing valve comprising a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides thereof, a valve for such seat opening, a governor chamber, a governor in such chamber, a connection, having a circularly bored passage therethrough, uniting the supply chamber, at its inlet portion with the governor chamber, valve-operating means including a rock shaft, extended from within the governor chamber into the supply chamber through said passaged` connection, provided with an annular groove therein, and actuated by the governor, and a by-pass leading from the passage in said connection adjacent the location of said annular groove to the outlet portion of the supply chamber.
4. A liushing valve comprisingA a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides thereof, a valve for such seat opening, a governor chamber, a governor in such chamber, a connection, having a circularly bored passage therethrough, uniting the supply chamber, at its inlet portion with the governor chamber, and formed with a Haring portion, valve-opening means including a rock shaft, extended from within the governor chamber into the supply chamber through said passaged connection, actuated by the governor, and having a tapered portion to seat in said flaring passage portion, and a spring operative to force the shaft endwise for the seating by its tapered portion in the Haring passage portion.
5. A flushing valve comprising a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and having an inlet and an outlet on opposite sides thereof, a valve for such seat opening, a governor chamber, a governor in such chamber, a connection, having a circularly bored passage therethrough, uniting the supply chamber, at its inlet portion with the governor chamber, and formed with a Haring portion, valve-operating means including a rock shaft, extended from within the governor chamber into the supply chamber through said passaged connection, provided with an annular groove therein, and havinO' a tapered intermediate portion to seat in said flaring passage portion, and a spring operative to force the shaft endwise for the seating of its tapered portion in the iaring passage portion, said rock shaft being actuated b y the governor, and a by-pass leading from the passage in said connection adjacent the location of said annular groove to the outlet portion of the supply chamber.
6. A iiushing valve comprising a supply chamber provided with a valve-seat, a governor chamber, by-pass connections between said chambers, one of said connections communicating with said supply chamber on one side of said seat and also opening into said governor chamber, and another of said connections communicating with said supply chamber on the other side of said seat, a valve for said valve-seat, a reciprocable governor in said governor chamber, and a rocking member journaled in said connection which opens into both chambers, and provided with an arm which is in the path of said governor and with an arm which has an actuating coaction with said valve.
7. rlhe combination` in a flushing valve, with a supply chamber provided with a valve-seat, and a valve for such seat having a vertically disposed link connected therewith, of a governor chamber at one side of said supply chamber and adapted to contain a fluid, a perforated piston springpressed in one direction in said governor chamber, said piston being provided with means to constrict the fluid-way there-i through while said piston is actuated by its sprinO, a piston-rod having a cam surface, and a rocking connecting member between said chambers having a member in the path of said cam surface and another member in cooperative relation to said link.
8. In a flushing valve, the combination with a supply chamber provided with a valve seat, and a valve for such seat having a stem, of a governor chamber at one side of said supply chamber, a governor in such chamber having a stem, a shaft journaled between said chambers for rocking movements and having portions thereof extending into the respective chambers, means be- 'tween one extremity of the shaft and the governor stem whereby on the movement of the governor stem a rocking movement is imparted to the shaft, means between the other extremity of the shaft and the valvestem for causing on the rocking of such shaft the opening movement'of the valve, and a spring for imparting a closing force to the valve.
9. In a flushing valve, the combination with -a supply chamber provided with a valve seat opening and aI valve therefor, of a governor chamber at one side of the supply chamber, a governor in said chamber having a stem provided with a cam, a shaft journaled between said chambers for rocking movements and having portions thereof extendinginto the respective chambers, the shaft extremity in the governor chamber having an arm coacting with the cam of the governor stem, and the shaft extremity in the supply chamber having an arm, means coopera-tive with the latter named arm and with said valve for actuating the latter on the rocking of the shaft, and a spring for exerting a closing force on the said valve.
10. lThe combination, in a flushing valve, with a supply chamber and a chamber adapted to contain a Huid, a connection between said chambers, said connection being tubular and having a tapered part, a rockshaft ournaled in said connection and having a tapered part in engagement with said first-named tapered part, a spring arranged to force said roclshaft in a direction to cause its tapered part to have a seating against the tapered part in the connection, and arms, one at the end of said rocker which is in said governor chamber and the other at the end of said rocker which is in said supply chamber, of a piston-rod provided with a piston in said governor chamber, and having a cam surface to engage. the arm which is in said chamber, a valve for said valve-seat in said supply chamber, said valve being provided with a valve-stem which is operatively connected with the rocker arm which is in said supply chamber, and a spring operative to force the valve toward said valve-seat and to retain said first-mentioned arm in contact with said cam-provided piston-rod.
11. In a flushing valve the combination with a supply chamber and a governor chamber, the former being provided with a valve seat and the latter being adapted to contain a fluid, a suitably journaled rock shaft arranged with its extremities respectively extending intosaid chambers, each extremity having anarm disposed in the respective chamber, of a governor in said governor chamber coacting with and adapted to swing the rockshaft arm in such chamber, a valve for the said seat in the supply chamber, a medium of lost motion connection between the rockshaft arm in the supply chamber and the valve, and adjustable means in such connection for varying the degree of lost motion.
12. In a flushing valve, in combination, a supply chamber having a valve seat opening therein and a valve therefor, a rockshaft having an extremity thereof extending into the supply chamber and means for operating it, an arm engaged with the extremity of the rockshaft in the supply chamber, a link connected with said arm, and another link pivotally connected with the first named link and fulcrumed in the supply chamber, a member connected with the valve and with the first named link, and a spring for exerting a closing force on the valve.
13. In a flushing valve, in combination, a supply chamber having a valve seat opening` therein and a valve therefor, and a. governor chamber, a rocksha-ft journaled between, and having the extremities thereof extending` into, the respective chambers, a governor in the governor chamber, coacting with the rock shaft extremity therein, to swing said rock shaft, means for operating said governor, an arm engaged with the extremity of the rockshaft in the supply chamber, a link connected with said arm, and another link pivotally connected with the first named link and fulcrumed in the supply chamber, a member connected with the valve and with the first named link, and a spring operatively applied for exerting a closing force on the valve.
14. In a flushing valve, in combination, a supply chamber having a valve seat opening therein and a valve therefor, and a governor chamber, a rockshaft journaled between and having the extremities thereof extending into the respective chambers, a governor in the governor chamber coacting with the rock shaft extremity therein, to swing said rock shaft, means for operating said governor, an arm engaged with the extremity of the rockshaft in the supply chamber and normally inclined to the axis of the valve, a link arranged at substantially a right angle to the valve axis, and connected with said arm, and another link substantially parallel with said shaft engaged arm pivotally connected with the first named link and fulcrumed in the supply chamber, a member connected with the valve and with the first named link, and a spring for exerting a closing force on the valve.
15. In a flushing valve, in combination, a supply chamber having a valve seat opening therein and a valve therefor and a governor chamber, a rockshaft journaled between and having the extremities thereof extending into the respective chambers, a governor in the governor chamber coacting with the rock shaft vextremity therein, to swing said rock shaft, means for operating said governor, an arm engaged with the extremity of the rockshaft in the supply chamber, a link connected with said arm, and another link pivotally connected with the first named link and fulcruined in the supply chamber, a member connected with the valve and with the first named link, and a spring between said last mentioned member and the wall of the supply chamber and reactively operative upon said linked connections for exerting a closing force on the valve. I
16. In a flushing valve, in combination, a supply chamber having a valve seat opening therein, and a valve therefor, a rockshaft having an extremity thereof extending intothe supply chamber and means for operating it, an arm engaged with the extremity of the rockshaft in the supply chamber, a fulcrum link connected with said arm, a .member pivotally connected to the valve extending across and beyond and pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said link, and a springl applied between the free extremity of said member and a fixed internal part of the casing.
17. In a flushing valve, in combination, a chambered supply casing having a valve seat openingl therein and a valve therefor, a rockshaft having an extremity thereof extending into said supply chamber and having a radial projection, an arm loosely fitted on the extremity of the rockshaft and having a lug projecting from the side thereof, means between said projection and said lug for constituting an adjustable abutment for engagement of the one relatively to the other, a link fulcrumed within the casing and pivotally connected to said arm, a member connecting the valve and link and a spring applied for exerting a closing force on the valve.
18. In a iiushing valve, in combination, a chambered supply casing having a valve seat opening therein and a valve therefor, a rockshaft having an extremity thereof extending into said supply chamber and having a radial projection, an arm loosely fitted on the extremity of the rockshaft and having a lug projecting from its side, a screw adjustably engaged through said lug and having its extremity in proximity t0 said radial projection, a linik fulcrumeid within the casing and pivotally connected to said arm, a member pivotally connected to the valve, extending across and beyond and pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said link, and a spring applied in compression between the free extremity of said member and a fixed internal part of the casing.
