IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,997, dated February 1, 1876 application filed September 2, 1875. 1

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD B. GUILD, of city of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bein- Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a rein-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will. now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my reinholder. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 a rear view, of the same.

My rein-holder is cast of one piece, in the form shown in the drawing, with an opening, d a, in one side, at an angle to the curved center opening-or slot at 1). Behind the front part of the rein-holder A is a point or projection,

. f, for the purpose of pressing the-lines toward the opening at b and away from the point a,

' so as to bind the lines, the said opening a I) being narrower toward the end b than toward the end a. At the entrance of the opening 0 01 into the opening-a b one side is made depressed or inclined, as shown at c, from the surface, to avoid or lessen the liability to catch on objects brushed over it. The point g on the opposite side is higher than the point at 0, so as to throw the lines above this latterpoint into the slot at b.

The general shape or outline of the holder is a combination of curves,-as shown, so as to have no'sharp corners or angles that might be liable to catch the lines or'other object.

Back of the holder A thus constructed is a plate, B, of the same general outline as the holder. This plate is used to keep the lines in position when the holder is used on an open dash, and to prevent the lines from wearing the leather on a leather dash-board. The plate and holder are placed on the side of the dashboard facing the driver, and on the other side of the dash-board is an L-shaped fastening, O, the parts being united together by screws, as shown. The inner surfaces of the plateB and fastener O are grooved, to receive the rails of the dash-board, andon the upper end of the fastener O is formed a hook, D, to tit over the upper rail.

It will be noticed in Fig. 2 that the reinholder A, plate B, and fastener G are slightly curved, whereby a better holdis taken on the dash-board. v 7

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The rein-holder A, having openings at b and c (1, projection f, and depressed part c,

all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The plateB and fastenerG, in combination with the rein-holder A,-having openings at b and c d, projection f, and depressed part c, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
