A TTORNEYS- Patented Sept. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PERRY C. GOODRICK, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO CANVAS PRODUCTS CORZPORATION,.OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN CAN JACKET Application filed January 26, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in insulating can jackets of the type shown in copending application Serial No. 738,282 filed August 21, 192 1 by Richard T. Laacke, and
more particularly to means for sealing the spaces between the flaps forming the cover thereof and for facilitating insertion of cans into the jacket.
In jackets of the type referred to, diificulty has been experienced in sealing the joint between the flaps comprising the cover and the body of the jacket, this being due to the fact that no means have heretofore been provided for closing the opening at the corners where the flaps are oined to the body of the jacket.
The jacket, as described in the above copending application, is particularly adapted for the transportation of ice cream in cans, the jacket preserving the cream in its solid or frozen state for a comparatively long period of time without the aid of ice or other refrigerating medium. Although the body of the jacket and the flaps comprising the cover thereof are made of heat insulating material it has been found that even a slight opening such as develops at the corners of the jacket where the flaps meet will permit sufiicient transfer of heat from the atmosphere to the 0 ice cream can to perceptibly lessen the heat insulating properties of the same and to decrease the length of time during which the ice cream will be preserved.
One of the objects of the present invention,
therefore, is to provide an improved jacket of the character described having a cover composed of a plurality of flaps with means for sealing the joint between the latter and the body of the jacket.
Another object is to provide an improved jacket of the character described, provided with flap-sealing means which shall also serve to support the flaps in outwardly flared position when open to thus facilitate the insertion of a can into the jacket.
Another object is to provide an improved jacket of the character described, having a cover comprising a plurality of flaps, which is so constructed that end portions of the jacket may be spread outwardly upon move- Serial No. 4,647.
ment of the flaps to open position to permit ready insertion of a can into the jacket.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the flaps comprising the cover folded outwardly to open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a pair of the flaps folded to closed position and the improved means cooperating therewith to seal the joint between the flaps and the body of the jacket at the corners thereof where the flaps meet and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the remaining flaps folded to closed position to complete the closure for the jacket. 7
The jacket comprises, in general, a body 1 provided with a cover comprising a plurality of flaps 2 and 3 connected to one end thereof and arranged for folding to close the same, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
For the purpose of sealing the joints between the flaps and body 1 flexible members 4; are secured to adjacent portions of the flaps and arranged over slits 5 whichextend down a short distance from the upper edge of the jacket at the four corners thereof. In the embodiment shown, 'members 4 are sewed to adjacent edges of the flaps and the edges of slits 5. I
In closing the end of the jacket, flaps 2 may be folded inwardly as shown in Fig. 2, and held in this position by any suitable means such as a strap 7 and buckle member 8 secured to the flaps as shown in any suitable manner such as by riveting. Reinforcing pieces 9 may be placed on the inside of the jacket to prevent the rivets 10 from pulling through the same. As flaps 2 are folded inwardly, flexible members 4 will likewise fold inwardly and cooperate with the flaps to close slits 5 and seal the joint between the flaps and body 1 at the corners thereof where the flaps meet. Flaps 3 are then folded inwardly to closed position, as shown in Fig. 3, and held in this position by any suitable means such as straps 11 and buckle members 12, the remaining portions of members 4- folding inwardly therewith to the positions indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 to completely close slits 5 and seal the joints between the flaps and body 1 at the four corners of the jacket and for a substantial distance inwardly thereof. v
From the foregoing it will be seen that the flexible members 4 provide means for completely sealing the joints between the flaps comprising the cover and the body of the jacket, and for preventing transfer of heat which would otherwise occur at these points.
-When flaps 2 and 3 are spread outwardly to open position, as shown in Fig. 1, the members 4 are stretched or spread to their full extent and support the flaps in an outwardly flared position. The members 4 also reinforce the body at the slits 5 and prevent tearing at this point.
It will be noted, also, that the slits 5 per-' mit end portions 13 of body 1 to spread outwardly with the flaps to facilitate insertion of a can into the jacket, these cans in most instances being shaped to fit snugly within body 1.
Various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A can jacket of the character described comprising 'a body of heat insulating mate rial, a plurality of oppositely disposed pairs of flaps of heat insulating'material at one end of the body, means for holding the flaps in closed position and flexible members arranged intermediate and secured to the flaps and adapted to be folded inwardly and to cooperate with the flaps to close and seal the spaces between the flaps adjacent the junctures of the flaps with the body, said flexible members terminating in spaced relation to and inwardly of the outer edges of the flaps and being of such shape and size as to permit the flaps to be extended to an open position wherein the insertion and removal of a can into and from the jacket is facilitated, the flexible members tending to maintain the flaps in such open position.
2. A can jacket of the character described comprising a body of heat insulating mate rial, a plurality of pairs of oppositely disposed heat insulating flaps connected to one end of the body, said flaps being adapted and arranged for folding down onto the body to close the same, each pair of flaps substantially covering the top of the container when folded down to closed position, one pair of flaps overlapping the other pair when the flaps are folded down to closed position, and flexible members located between adjacent flaps and secured to the flaps and to the body and adapted to be folded inwardly and to lie flatly between the overlapping flaps to seal the spaces between the flaps at the juncture of the flaps with the body, said flexible members also being adapted to tend to maintain the flaps in open position.
8. A can jacket of the character described comprising a body of heat insulating material, a plurality of pairs of oppositely disposed fiaps of heat insulating material connected to one end of the body and adapted and arranged to be folded down onto the end of the body to close the same or to be extended from the body to open the same, said body being slit intermediate said flaps for a short distance inwardly beyond the line of juncture of the flaps with the body to permit the end portion of the body to spread outwardly upon movement of the flaps to open position whereby insertion of a can into the jacket is facilitated, and flexible members covering the slits and the spaces between adjacent flaps in the regions of the junctures of the flaps with the body, said flexible members be ing secured to the body and to the flaps and being of such shape and size as to be adapted when folded inwardly to seal the spaces between the flaps adjacent the junctures of the flaps and body and to maintain the flaps in open position when the flaps are extended.
4. The combination with a jacket for ice cream cans including a tubular body portion closed at the bottom adapted to fit and insulate a can, and formed of heat insulating material, a plurality of pairs of opposed flaps of insulating material to close the end of said jacket over a can, the combined area of each pair of flaps being of such size and shape as to substantially close the open end of the jacket, of a gusset between each two adjacent flaps and having its edges secured thereto to prevent the ingress of air when the flaps are in their folded position and means for holding the flaps in closed position.
In witness whereof I hereto afiix my signature.
