(El. 229-6) This invention relates to the art of packaging and, in one of its more specific aspects, to an improved package or carton for use in containing, storing and/ or transmitting various products including perishable foods, such as bananas, citrus fruit and the like.
The package of this invention may be made of any suitable material. Preferably and for reasons of economy in materials costs and convenience in shipping and assembly, the principal parts of the package are made of an appropriate, relatively stiff, foldable sheet material such as paperboard.
rthis package comprises, on the one hand, a rst blank which constitutes the body of a container and having a central or bottom panel, rectangular in shape, on the sides of which are hinged four lateral panels of trapezoidal shape, forming, when the appropriate edges are joined, the body of a container in the shape of a truncated pyramid; and at the edge of each lateral panel remote from the bottom panel is hinged a short extension, designed to be folded to a position parallel to the bottom panel and, if desired, joined together; and on each of the side edges of the large lateral panels there being hinged extensions which can be folded along foldable lines, thus resulting in an end tlap and a median flap, in such a manner that the end ilap can be inserted into an elongated slot in the small adjacent lateral panel then folded back against one side of that panel with the median ilap on the other side of said panel, and kept in position by a locking tab; and, on the other hand, a second blank which constitutes a cover and reinforcing envelope for the container of the package, having a central panel of rectangular shape adapted to extend across the top or open end of the container and having on each of its small sides, a lateral ilap adapted to be folded down to a position parallel to a small lateral panel of the container and inserted between the latter and a corresponding median ila said lateral llap having a notch perpendicular to its fold line and being arranged in a manner to t where the articulation or the articulations separate the two flaps of the container and provided on each of its large sides with extensions in form and dimensions corresponding to those of the large lateral panels of the container on which they are adapted to be folded back, and being themselves extended by iiaps of a shape and dimensions largely corresponding to those of the half of the bottom of the container against which they are adapted to be disposed, the cover being provided with lateral extensions adapted to be folded back and inserted between a small lateral panel of the container and a corresponding median flap.
The package preferably is completed by three cords, the two smaller' of which engage, respectively, the inside of the angles where the outside flaps fold over the center flaps and between these last and the corresponding small side wall, and then knotted in the vicinity of the opening of the body of the package and the third, after passing in a transverse direction at least twice around the package with its reinforcing envelope, is tied to the rst two cords in such a manner as to form a grip for carrying.
The invention will be better understood from the description which follows and the attached drawings, in which:

FIG. l shows a paperboard container blank in accordance with the invention having a rectangular central or bottom panel 1 defined by score, ie., fold lines in the blank. Hinged to bottom panel 1 along the score lines are large lateral panels 2 and small lateral panels 3, all of which are trapezoidal in shape and all of which are disposed with the shorter parallel sides of the trapezoids coextensive with the score lines. As shown in FlG. 2, when such lateral panels 2 and 3` are 11p-raised, the resulting container, i.e., receptacle has the configuration of an inverted, truncated pyramid. FIGS. 1 and 2 also show extensions 4 and 5 hinged along score lines on panels 2 and 3, respectively. The score lines being on the ends of the panels away or remote from bottom panel 1. EX- tensions l and 5 are positioned, in the completed container, parallel to bottom panel 1 and, if desired, fastened together by staples or clips 6.
FlG. 1 also shows portions extending from and hinged along score lines to large lateral panels Z which, by virtue of score lines 7 traversing such portions, include end, Le., outer flaps d and median, i.e., inner flaps 9 and it shows slots lll in small lateral panels 3 into which as shown in FlG. 2, end llaps d are introduced with the assistance of a iirst folding along score lines 7. Slots 10 are disposed in small lateral panels 3 at right angles to the score lines between the latter and bottom panel ll.
FIG. 2 also shows that end flaps 8 are insertable through slots lll until median llaps 9 parallel, if not abut, the outsiders, i.e. outer surfaces, of tip-raised small lateral panels 3 and that they are again folded along score lines 7 to parallel, if not abut, the insides, i.e., inner surfaces, of tip-raised small lateral panels 3. Thereafter end flaps 8 are held or locked in position by virtue of the insertion of tabs 11 on the ends thereof into small slots 12 disposed along the score lines between large lateral. panels 2 and median iiaps 9.
RG. 3 shows a paperboard container cover blank in accordance with the invention having a rectangular container top or cover, central panel 13 defined by score lines in the blank. Hinged to cover panel 13 along the score lines are small lateral flaps 11i, each having a notch extending inwardly frorn its end edge. Each notch 15 is perpendicular to the score line, lbetween central panel 13 and a lateral flap i4 and is formed midway between the side edges of a lateral llap 14. When central cover panel 13 is disposed above the receptacle formed from the container blank and lateral flaps 14 are folded downwardly along the score lines between them and panel 13, notch 15 permits the insertion of ilaps 14 between the containers lip-raised small lateral panels 3 and median flaps 9 parallel therewith by providing a space for the avoidance of end flaps S by lateral flaps 14.
FlG. .3 also shows intermediate panels 16 hinged along the longer score lines defining panel 13, having a trape zoidal shape, and being disposed with the longer of their parallel sides coextensive with the score lines. Panels 16 have, in turn, lateral flaps 17 hinged along score lines as illustrated.
On the sides of llaps 16 away from panel 13 are aps 13 of a length corersponding to that of the bottom of the package which they are to underlie (FIG. 4) and of a width about equal to half of the width of bottom panel 1.
Flaps 1S have lateral extensions 19 which are insertable between small lateral panels 3 of the container and median flaps 9, in order tobring about the final locking` of the package.
This locking is completed by two small ties 20 (FGS. 2 and 5) yinsertedrespectively inside the folding angles ofendl -i'iaps 8 and median-flaps 9 as illustrated in FIG. 2, and by means of a tie-21 of a length enabling the strapping of ythe, package at least twice in a transverse direction and a connection with the other two ties, so as to constitute, at the upper central part of the package, a carrying handle. In'F1G.'5, the twosmall ties are shown in broken lines, prior to their being connected with the third tie.
The fully assembled package, as is shown in FIG. 5, has openings 23 distributed all over its surface, in order to insure adequate ventilation of its contents and to make it possible, for instance, when the latter, consists of green fruit, kfor the same to ripen normally even inside said package. The ventilation is favored by the shape of a truncated pyramid ofthe package which, when placed side by Side and adequately arranged with the cover on the upper part leaves, under any circumstances, passages between them where the air can freely circulate.
kFinallygthe cover 13 (FTGS. 3, 4 and 5) shows two weakened areas 22, arranged in such a manner as to make it possible for them to be readily broken away, when necessary, `and to -bend around a fold line 24, so as to constitute an inspection flap, each having a perforation l235 to facilitate the `handling thereof, particularly when it is desired to raise areas 2,2 in the position in which they are shown in FG. 4.

In a package, a container'forrned from a blank of a suitably stiff foldable sheet material and comprising a rectangular bottom panel, a plurality of trapezoidal side panels, Ieach side panel being hinged along its shorter parallel sidevto a corresponding side of the bottoml panel, lsaid side panels projecting generally upwardly from the bottompanel, andiorming therewith an inverted truncated pyramidal receptacle, and an extension at each side edge ofa pair of oppositely disposed side panels, eachextension ,comprisingan inner flap hinged to its side panel along alfoldline and an outer iiap hinged to the inner flap along a line Vparallel to said fold line, each of the remaining side panels being provided with a slot positioned to admit two of said outer flaps so that each may be positioned along one surface of said slotted side, panel with the attached inner ilap positioned along the other surface thereof, and a cover for said container formed from a blank of a suitably stif foldable sheet material and comprising a rectanguiar central panel which extends over and across the upper end of the container, a pair of slotted side panels hinged to opposite sides of the central cover panel, a-second pair of side panels each of which is hinged to the remaining sides of the cover central panel, each `cover sidepanel being positioned adjacent the outer surfaceo and registering with a corresponding container side panel and being provided with a flap that underlies the bottom panel of the container, .each underlying iiap being provided at each end with an extension projecting beyond the corresponding container side, each of said slotted cover side panels and said underlying iiap extensions being inserted between one of the slotted side panels of the container and the inner iiap of at least one of the extensions passing throughthe slot therein, the slot in each slotted cover side panel registering witlrthe slot in the rassociated slotted container side panel, said package further comprising a pair, ofties made of a iiexibie cord-like material, each of said ties including a first portion which passes between the inner and outer liaps adjacent each slottedcontainer side panel and beneath the `junctions between -said container flaps, and a second portion outside the container.
